Fishing Song...Great Album Review...A Promotion

BILL BLOG

Friday July 19, 2024

Friday morning and we’re getting ready to jump into the weekend. Sunshine and an 84 high in Music City today.

YESTERDAY

I spent yesterday morning writing a fun fishing-love kind of song with bluegrass artist Caroline Owens yesterday. Caroline can bait her own hook which I already knew so I wasn’t too surprised that she loved the song idea. She talked about hooking her ear a few times while fly-fishing, so I knew I had given this idea to the right artist.

And we got to wrap up the day with dinner at a great Mexican restaurant our publisher Joe Dan Cornett took us and the head of the label Jerry Salley and Billy Blue Recording artist Carson Peters out to lunch where we not only shared chips and salsa, but we shared a lot of laughs.

FYI…Carson Peters is an incredibly talented artist at just the age of 19. He appeared on the Jay Leno “Tonight Show” when he was just 8 years old, then played the Grand Ole Opry shortly after, and he also got a 4 turn chair on “The Voice” one season. Not only a singer-writer but also a heck of a fiddle player. Check him out HERE.  And Caroline Owens who is also a Billy Blue songwriter is about the same age. You’ll be hearing a lot about these two as time goes on.

NEW ON VINYL

I got this nice gift yesterday.

The new Darin & Brooke Aldridge album that I have a couple of songs on including “Wildflower Too” and “Where You’ll Find Me”. I still love vinyl records so this is a nice one to put in my little collection at home.

GREAT REVIEW

I got this really wonderful review of the Kristy Cox album “Let It Burn” from a friend yesterday. There are three of my songs on this one that are each pointed out in this review from the publication “Bluegrass Unlimited”, one of the leading publication for bluegrass music.

And the writer was very kind to say some nice words about the 3 songs I helped write on this project, "God Never Made A Mountain", "Some Things Don't Go Together" and in the writers words "The stunning 'How Lucky' Am I'. Thank you Bob Allen for the very kind words.

 NEW MUSIC

Yesterday my friend Brady Seals put up a new digital album on his website that’s now available for purchase. Brady, formerly of Little Texas put 5 songs on there that the two of us co-wrote. “Deeper Shade of Blue Collar”, “Southernism” also written with Josh Shilling, “Hillbilly Tree” and “Catch 22”, and “If It Ain’t One Beer It’s Another”. I’m so glad he’s got the songs out there. You can hear a small sample of each of these tunes here on his WEBSITE if you’d like.

HEALTH NOTES

The Mayo Clinic has found a new type of memory loss that’s often mistaken for Alzheimer’s. They say the syndrome is similar but is slower to progress.

A new study reveals that long COVID risk has dropped over time but still remains substantial.

An analysis study on women’s health claims that the healthiest state for women are in the northeast with Massachusetts at number 1. The least healthiest states for women are in the south with Mississippi being the worst.

YOU MIGHT BE A REDNECK IF…

My friend Linda Davis found this very different wedding proposal…VERY different and it made me laugh. Watch THIS and tell me Jeff Foxworthy’s won’t be mentioning it in his stand-up comedy routine.

PROMOTION

Got to say how proud my wife Kathy and I am of our son in law Casey Petersen and his wife and our daughter Heather as Casey got promoted to Warrant Officer 2 (WO2) over in Germany where they are stationed right now. He’s a pilot and just made his first ever transatlantic flight which is a pretty big deal for pilots. Could not be happier or prouder for the two of them!

BOB NEWHART

Man, I was sad to hear of the passing of comedian Bob Newhart yesterday at age 94. His deadpan comedy delivery was “money” for him for all of his career. I started listening to him when he made comedy albums wait back when with classic bitlike this one as a driver instructor.

The Bob Newhart TV show?  Never missed it. “Hi, I’m Larry.  I’m Darryl and this is my other brother Darryl.” Made me laugh every time. And TV guide named the last episode of that show as the “best ending ever” for a sitcom. I couldn’t disagree with that…I watched it “live” that night like a lot of the country did.

And he’s iconic forever for his role in Elf.

One of my favorite quotes from Bob is this one which has a lot of truth laced into it. “I think you should be a child for as long as you can. I have been successful all of my life being able to do that. Don’t rush into adulthood, it isn’t all that much fun.”

I had the pleasure of interviewing him on the radio when I was in Milwaukee. He invited me and my family to the show, we went, and got to go backstage to visit with him a bit. Me, my wife Kathy, our daughter Heather who was very young and her best friend. He could not have been nicer. Gosh, thank you for the years and years of great laughs Bob. RIP.

THEM AND US

A billionaire just bought the world’s largest Stegosaurus skeleton at auction. He bought it for just 44.6 million dollars. Must be a heck of a big living room this guy has.

BASEBALL STADIUMS

Yep, it’s been well documented here that I’m a huge baseball fan. I’ve seen game in all of the Major League baseball parks with the exception of 7 at the moment. So many great stadiums with my favorites still being the old parks of Wrigley in Chicago and Fenway Park in Boston.

But the worst stadium I’ve ever been to is the one in Tampa. Zero character. It’s like the Tampa Bay Rays are playing in a basement…on artificial turf STILL!

There’s been a lot of noise that another city (like Nashville) might get them because the city was refusing to build them a new park. That changed yesterday as they’ve decided to spend 1.2 billion to make that happen.

Now this looks a lot more like a place fans will want to visit and watch their team play.

And it gives me one more stadium to try and go see.

AMAZON

Amazon Prime Days broke a record. 14.2 BILLION dollars in sales this time around. Which makes this picture memorable.

TODAY
I’m sitting down to write a funny idea that my friend Angus Gill has. He recently moved over here full time from Australia and it’s a lot more fun creating “face to face” with him in person than it was starting at each other long distance with a huge time zone difference on a computer. Looking forward to chasing his funny idea today.

Have a great weekend!

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and then each songwriter sat down wit

Beach Rhymes...Football Kickoff...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Thursday September 5, 2024   Thursday arises and I have a day of traveling to Marion, Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog. Back up to 90 with sun today.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Darrell Clanton yesterday for the first time. Darrell lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife and back in the day he was an artist here in Nashville and had a couple of country songs on the charts, and had several folks record his songs.     These days Darrell and his band “Bad Habit” are very active in the Trop Rock genre playing a lot of beach music and beach shows. A couple of years ago Darrell and I played the Jim Parker Songwriter Show in Huntsville, Alabama along with my buddy Brent Burns . And then Darrell and I just played it again a few months ago. Then yesterday I really got to know him and we did write a beach song for him.   We’ll be writing more for sure in the future. And there’s a chance that sometime next year that we’ll do a cruise toget

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f
