It’s not only Monday morning, but it’s also the last day of August. How is that possible? And though Fall is around the corner and football games have started, it’s still H O T. We’re expecting a 95-degree high in Nashville today, 100 on Thursday, with the heat index around 105.
Thank goodness, I’m going to be in the mountains of Ruidoso, New Mexico on Thursday, where the high is only 80 and the low that evening will be just 58 degrees! More on that at the end of today’s Blog.
THE WEEKEND
Last Friday morning I was at my publishing company rhyming with both Angus Gill and Victoria Venier. First time with this particular trio.
Angus, the Australian, brought a great bluegrass idea. While he was in Australia, he recorded an entire Bluegrass album that included “Scrapbook,” written about his late grandmother who passed a few years ago from Alzheimer's. He truly honored her, as that song that I wrote with him went on to win the Golden Guitar for Best Bluegrass Recording of the Year in Australia
And though Victoria has not written a lot of “grass,” she laid out a bunch of lyrics that went on the paper and stuck.
Fun day of writing.
MORE DOLLY
It’s looking like there’s a real chance that our airport in Nashville will be renamed “Dolly International Airport.” Most lawmakers seem to be in favor of that.
And the Governor may name September 25 as Dolly Parton Day. Get it? 9 2 5?
LIKE DOLLY DID
The song I blogged about last Friday, “Like Dolly Did,” that I wrote with Adam and Amy Pope has had some heartwarming reactions. Adam and Amy put up the video of them singing it acoustically on their couch.
Since Friday, this song -video has been shared over 1,100 times on Facebook, with 450 wonderful comments, and 1.1K likes. I think we touched some hearts with our simple tribute to Dolly. Thank you for loving our little tribute to her.
SONG OF THE DAY
This one is from independent country singer Scott Southworth, “Country, No Matter What Country.” This is an idea I brought to Scott because Scott sings abroad quite a bit. The thought being that a REAL traditional country song is COUNTRY no matter what country you’re in.
The song took on a new life as I suggested that it would be cool if Scott had some of his country artist friends from 7 different countries sing parts of this song. And danged if Scott not only did that, BUT, he also has a video, that’s taken three years to finish on the way, showing country singers from SEVEN different countries helping Scott sing our song.
Can’t wait to see the video.
HEALTH NOTES
The FDA announced that the massive cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce and thousands of illnesses has expanded to three more states. Georgia, Texas, and now we have it here in Tennessee as well. 11,458 illnesses have now been reported over 20 states.
Walmart has agreed to pay a $50 million settlement over allegations its pharmacies filled illegal opioid prescriptions.
Startling. The number of 9/11 cancer victims has skyrocketed 1,680% over the last decade.

AI CLEANING
It’s begun. In San Francisco, you can hire a humanoid robot to clean your house for $30 an hour.
It will wash dishes, clean floors, and yes, it will take out the trash. And if a burglar breaks in, it can kick their butts.
I’m betting that pretty soon they’ll be able to take your dog or husband for a walk.
RODNEY
I read an article this morning listing some of Rodney Dangerfield’s best “one-liners.” And man, he had some. I always loved the way he used to put Johnny Carson on the floor every time he was on the Tonight Show. Here are a couple of those funny gems.
“I tell ya I get no respect from anyone. I bought a cemetery lot. The guys said, “There goes the neighborhood.”
“My uncle’s dying wish was to have me sitting on his lap. He was in the electric chair.”
“I used to work in a pet store. People kept asking how big I’d get.”

JUMPING HIGH
A guy from Switzerland just broke a “Guinness” record for “blobbing.” I had to look that up myself.
Blobbing is an outdoor water sport where one person sits on the end of a long, inflated air bag (the “blob”) and is catapulted into the air when another person jumps onto the opposite end from an elevated platform.
The guy from Switzerland soared over 92 feet in the air.
When I was in grade school, we had an early form of reverse “blobbing.” We called it a See-Saw. You’d get the other person up high, and then you’d jump off. Yeah, a little juvenile, and there were a lot of sore butts, but I think we laid the groundwork for “Blobbing.”
SENIOR HIGH
A study claims that more than half of all seniors are using cannabis just to get high. And in New York, that figure is 60%.
Gosh, I’m figuring there HAS to be a song I can write about that…right? “Grannie Got A Buzz On” anybody?
PUMPKIN
That Fall flavor is everywhere already, and the temperatures are in the 90’s. And there’s a pumpkin something for everyone.
How about some pumpkin popcorn?
Or pumpkin beer?
And my favorite. Pumpkin Spam!
Who knew? I’m not a pumpkin guy myself, so someone take a bit of pumpkin spam for me and give me a review.
THERE GOES THE SAVINGS
The word is that streaming services are now priced about the same as cable. A lot of people have pulled the plug hoping to save money, but streaming services keep raising their prices, much like cable. If you try to replicate the channels you have through cable, the price is now about the same. Geez.
About the only way to really save on TV anymore is to go back to three channels and put one of these on top of your Zenith.
And don’t forget to wrap tin foil around it for better reception.

TODAY
I’ve got an off day, but it will give me some time to rehearse songs for a couple of shows later this week. This Thursday night I’ll be at the beautiful Spencer Theatre in the mountains out in Ruidoso- Alto, New Mexico, for an “Evening in the Round” show with Linda Davis and Lang Scott. It’s being called a “classic” show because the first half of the show, the three of us will be singing classic country songs with a full band, before we do our normal songwriter show in the second half. I chose “Tiger By The Tail” by Buck Owens, “Mama’s Don’t Let Your Babies” by Waylon and Willie, and “You Take Me For Granted” by Merle Haggard.
Then this Friday night our trio will play in Midland, Texas.
This will be a very fun trip.
