A New Gig...A New Book Signing...Grits & Gravy

BILL BLOG

It’s the middle of the week. And it will be Wednesday all day. 88 for a high today. After being near 100 for well over a week, it’s amazing how comfortable 88 degrees is.

YESTERDAY

At the last second, my writing appointment with recording artist Spence Hatcher was cancelled, and we rescheduled. Spencer is tearing up the road these days, and is headed to New York today for a couple of shows with country artist Josh Turner.

I'm happy that Spencer is getting that kind of exposure these days. He recently worked with Hank Jr. and Zach Top as well. And when he’s working with those folks, he’s singing our song, “Hot Weather, Cold Beer,” which we wrote together and is his current single.

So… since the day opened up, my wife has filled it with grocery shopping. Sigh.

NEW SHOW

I just added a private show benefiting the organization Mercy Chefs, which provides gourmet food for disaster relief teams worldwide.

I think this will be the third year I’ve done this alongside my friend Linda Davis and Lang Scott, who were kind enough to invite me.

The event is October 6. Other songwriters, singers, and musicians will also entertain those who give to this great cause. Looking forward to it.

SUBTLE FREQUENCY

My wife Kathy has another book signing on the books. This one will be back in the Cincinnati area.

I have TWO good reasons to be there with her. One, to help her sell her book. And the second reason?

Nuff said.

SONG OF THE DAY

Sharing another Kristy Cox song, “So Many Rainy Days,” that I wrote one sunny day with Jimmy Fortune and Sydni Perry at Jimmy’s house one morning. I had a little start on this idea, and the two of them jumped in and really brought this song to life. Kristy has said that it’s one of her favorite songs she’s ever recorded, and she sings it a lot in her shows. Thank you, Kristy.

I'm excited for Kristy's next album that will be released on October 9. I'm blessed to have the first single release off of this project, "No Regrets" that I wrote with Lauren Mascitti & Kristen Lee Bearfield. Can't wait to share this one.

HEALTH NOTES

A new Harvard study suggests that people who fly for a living could face a higher risk of certain types of cancer.

Hopeful news. A Parkinson’s patient who suffered tremors for years underwent a new ultrasound treatment that stopped his tremors. It was a non-invasive procedure that targets precise brain areas.

How bad was the heat wave in Europe?  More than 16,000 died. And still, few have AC.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Again, sign placement is everything.

THEM AND US

To say Spider-Man makes a lot of money would be a huge understatement. The latest movie has already made over 2 billion dollars. The star, Tom Holland, was paid $20 million for the lead role.

That seems like a lot of money, but reportedly his back-end bonuses will bank him over 100 MILLION bucks.

If they ever hold open auditions for the role of “Underdog” in a movie, I’m lining up for my shot.

FUNNY

This headline from the “fake news” headliner at Babylon Bee:

Scientists determine ultra-processed foods like Nacho Cheese Doritos are exceptionally delicious, but more extensive testing and MANY more bags are needed to draw a final conclusion.

GRITS AND GRAVY

I wrote a song titled “Grits and Gravy” with my “Hits & Grins” trio buddies Victoria Venier and Steve Dean that we sing a lot in our shows that addresses that fake headline above about processed foods. And how despite all the health warnings about processed foods, nothing tastes as good real food, like grits and gravy.

Got more calories than we can count

Might die too soon, ain’t no doubt

But at least I’ll die with a good taste in my mouth

AMAZON

They, and other tech companies, are buying up books as fast as they can. Especially rare books to use for AI purposes. By scanning classics, it’s teaching AI to write better. Apparently, Amazon has a building in Las Vegas, and all they do there is scan books.

And, you can make money by scanning books yourself and then selling that to Amazon.

Just more crazy AI stuff that keeps coming. I think I’m going to scan my wife’s book and make some extra dollars.

THIS CAUGHT MY ATTENTION

A headline that read, “If Jesus Showed Up Today, Would He Play Guitar?” The article was about how some don’t think big bands in church playing “modern worship music” is right.

I grew up in a small Baptist Church. Piano, which my mom played, and an organ that Mr. Mayes played. That was it. But, our family of 7 would get up and sing, and I would play an acoustic guitar. So, we may have been breaking some kind of gospel rule. I don’t know. But nobody complained that I knew about.

The argument is way over my head. I kind of think Jesus would dig guitar. Banjo? That’s for another time.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From Yogi Berra:

When the waitress asked if I wanted my pizza sliced into 4 or 8 slices, I said, “Four.” I don’t think I can eat 8.

TODAY

I’ve got both today and tomorrow wide open, so I’ll be spending some time rehearsing songs as I have a little run of shows ready to start with Linda Davis & Lang Scott. Our Evening in the Round Show will be in Mountain City, Tennessee this Saturday night.

Then, on September 3, we will be in beautiful Alto, New Mexico at the Spencer Theatre.

And on September 4, we travel down to Odessa, Texas for another show.

Looking forward to those.

Have a great Wednesday!
