Thursday morning has arrived with heat. The high will be 91 in Nashville today.
YESTERDAY
I wrote a new song with Daryl Mosley, who is an award-winning bluegrass singer and songwriter, and it didn’t take us long. Daryl is a fast writer, as I tend to be. I brought a verse and a chorus that he loved. And then within half an hour, Daryl kicked out a great second verse and chorus to this new country love song we penned.
That made us joke about how EASY songwriting is. It isn’t. But a song we’re both proud of fell out in short order yesterday at my publishing company
Thanks for a great second half to this song Daryl.
LAST NIGHT
My wife and I went to a little musical celebration party for my friend Lauren Mascitti, who signed a publishing deal here in Nashville. Friends of hers organized a musical evening and invited a few guest songwriters to sit in with her at a great Irish Pub, “McNamara’s.” And the place was sold out.
When it was my turn to sit in, I sang a funny song Lauren and I wrote one day with Jimmy Fortune titled, “It Wasn’t the Apple on the Tree.” (It was the pair on the ground) And that got a big laugh.
It was great to see the love for this talented lady who SINGS so beautifully—just a great evening.
A VETERAN PASSES
Navy Corpsman Carl Phillips passed away last week, out in Colorado, where he lives. I did not find out until yesterday that they played his song “My Savior’s Eyes,” which I wrote with him, during his time in the service, when I was on a Freedom Sings USA retreat in Montrose, Colorado, a few years ago. He won several medals for his distinguished service in the Navy, and he was a heck of a nice man.
Rest in peace, my friend, and once again, thank you for your service to our country.
These are the lyrics to Carl’s song.
Verse
Signed up for the Navy, Marine Corpsman in Nam
Saw the best and worst side of my fellow man
I’ve seen my share of good things, from the lows to the highs
But I’ve never seen anything like the love
In my savior’s eyes
Verse
I’ve seen my share of soldiers lying wounded in the field
Saw relief on their faces when I told them they would heal
I saw my share of bravery. I’ve seen grown men cry
But I’ve never seen anything like the love
In my savior’s eyes
Chorus
He protected me back then, as now
I was lost, but somehow he found me
I saved a few lives, and he saved mine
I’ve never seen anything like the love in my saviors’ eyes
He lets me see the Rockies and the geese taking wind
The falling snow in winter here on the western rim
He lets me see my family gathered round at Christmas time
But I’ve never seen anything like the love
In my savior’s eyes
Chorus
Tag
I saved a few lives, but he saved mine
I’ve never seen anything like the love in my savior’s eyes
SONG OF THE DAY
Today I’m sharing the song “In Memphis” recorded by Jeannie Kendall, who was half of the famed “The Kendalls” duo back in the day when she and her Dad rode the top of the charts with songs like “Heaven’s Just A Sin Away.”
This song went on Jeannie’s last album, one of four that she recorded of mine. It was written with my “Hits & Grins” partners Steve Dean and Victoria Venier.
We were on the way to a show in Little Rock and got stuck in traffic in Memphis. With nothing better to do, Steve grabbed a guitar, and we wrote this song while being stuck in the traffic jam.
Thank you, Jeannie, for recording this song.
Our “Hits & Grins” trio recorded this song, as did the “TnT” duo, so it’s been a pretty good song for us.
HEALTH NOTES
I was sorry to read that ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ hero pilot Captain ‘Sully’ Sullenberger revealed that he received an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
A study claims that the keto diet might increase your risk of intestinal cancer.
Reportedly, some health care workers in New York are furious as some nurses are being replaced with AI.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Say what?
SCAM
A warning has gone out in a lot of places about fake phone calls from the police department using real names, and they have real personal information about you, like your social security numbers. Some of the calls claim that you have outstanding fines to pay, and or outstanding warrants, and then they try to get you to pay. Some have.
And the criminals “spoof” the caller ID to make it look like the call is coming from an official Sheriff’s Office number. It’s not.
Hang up immediately, or don’t answer, is the advice from REAL police folks. I can only hope the REAL Police will catch the FAKE Police sooner rather than later.
THEM AND US
Howard Stern just signed a three-year deal where he only has to do one radio show a week. No details on this new contract, but his last 5-year deal with Sirius-XM was worth 500 million dollars. Somebody did the math. Howard is making $8,000 a minute.
Geez, I guess a guy could get by on that huh?
COOL
It’s been so hot that folks are having to be creative to keep cool. Some are bringing a beach umbrella into the house.
Some are taking advantage of their refrigerator.
And you can always fill up your garbage can with ice.
Stay cool any way you can.
CORK IT
Pretty ingenious. One playground surface in Brooklyn is made out of recycled wine and champagne corks.
The surface is called Corkeen.
A bit better than the asphalt surface I used to fall on from getting too ambitious on those old metal monkey bars.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
From track athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee:
“It’s better to look ahead and prepare than to look back and regret.”
TODAY
Today should be special, as I’m in a writing room with Caroline Owens and Linda Davis. Caroline has always wanted to write with my friend Linda, so I’m glad I was able to make this writing happen.
I know one thing, even if we don’t get a great song out of it, the laughter will be a gift.
Have a great Thursday!
