Say “Hello” to Tuesday morning. Up to 89 degrees in Music City today.
YESTERDAY
I wrote with Shay Watson, and it’s been a bit. We used to write a lot together, especially when he was half of the Watson & Nash duo.
Shay, Joe Nash, and I wrote several songs on that album of theirs, including this “rockin’” sports anthem, “Bring It On.” These days, Shay writes a lot of songs, fillers, and instrumentals for well-known TV shows.
Shay is a HUGE baseball fan, as am I, and I saw quite an extensive collection of baseball cards, some of them, one in particular, that’s worth a pretty good sum. So after catching up and talking a lot of baseball, we wrote a baseball song titled “Long Ball.” And we hope that Shay might be able to land this song on a TV show or a movie. He’s pretty good at that, so here’s hoping.
It was great writing with him again, and catching up on his successful musical life as a singer, musician, and producer.
BAREFOOTIN’
That’s the title of the new summer song from my Missouri friend Becky Denton that we wrote together. Becky and her talented husband Will are going to make a video of our song, and they are looking for little video clips of folks doing their favorite summer things in their bare feet, like dancing. You could be in the video! To find out how, watch this little CLIP from Becky.
SONG OF THE DAY
Country star, long-time Grand Ole Opry star Jeannie Seeley passed away at the age of 85, 1 year ago yesterday. She had some kind of career. And she could be funny, and she could be “one of the boys” with her language sometimes. She was the first female to wear a mini dress on the Opry stage.
I was blessed to get to know her a little towards the end of her life. I interviewed her on WSM Radio, a great interview. That happened one night when I was on the air in the studios that used to be located in the Opryland Hotel. Jeannie and my old Missouri friend Helen Cornelius tapped on the window. I got up, let them both in, and then put them on the air. That happened a lot back in the day when the radio studio was in the hotel.
And then a few years ago, my friend Jenny Tolman convinced Jeannie to sing a wonderful duet that I wrote with Jenny and her husband Dave Brainard titled “Who’ll Be Your Fool.” It’s a great video, and if you look hard enough, you’ll see me in it, sitting at the control board while Jenny and Jeannie are singing.
So that duet is the song of the day.
HEALTH NOTES
Publix blueberries have been recalled in 8 southern states after E. coli cases.
Research suggests that losing 1 hour of sleep each night may lead to weight gain.
A study shares that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder share 70% of their genetic roots.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
My bet is, they do.
COLLECTIBLES
I was thinking about my friend Shay Watson, whom I mentioned above, and his collection of baseball cards. It made me sad again that my shoebox full of cards from my youth is long gone and lost.
It also got me to thinking about how folks collect EVERYTHING. Some of them, odd things. Like this collection of green glowing cats.
There’s a person out there somewhere who collects odd pasta shapes.
And even someone who collects Yo-Yos. But only GREEN Yo-Yos
I’m betting the price for those goes up and down. (Ouch)
I TRIED
I was in a sports bar last night, and the World Cup soccer matchup between the USA and Belgium was on. I tried, I really tried to get into the game, as a lot of the bar was filled with enthusiastic fans. The USA lost 4-1 and never looked like they were in the game. I just can’t get into it. In the words of Homer Simpson…
SHARKS
What’s with sharks this year? Shark attacks are already in double figures, and it’s just the beginning of summer. I think I’ll stay out of the water and not watch “Shark Week” on TV this year.
SPECIAL BUNS
How about Pringles making flavored hot dog buns that fit into a Pringles can?
They call them “Pop Dog Buns.” You can get three flavors. Cream and Onion, Barbecue, or Honey Mustard.
Buns in a can. Who’d have thought?
SIRI
Apple has a new feature that will allow you to adjust Siri’s voice. You can make it a little “warmer” if you’d like. I’m trying to get mine to sound like Gilbert Gottfried’s voice.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
From Walt Disney:
“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”
TODAY
I’ll be at the rhyming table today with the talented Lauren Mascitti, who just signed a big publishing deal. Good for her!
And Lee Black, a great gospel songwriter.
And Lee is a member of “Legacy 5”, a very popular southern gospel quartet.
Might be writing a gospel thing today, we’ll see.
Have a great Tuesday.
