Thursday morning in Gulf Shores, Alabama. 77 will be the “comfortable” high here on the coast.
YESTERDAY
I was back at Lulu’s early in the afternoon to catch some songwriters I know singing their original songs at the Brent Burns songwriter series here at MOTM.
Mike Nash is a great Trop Rock musician and did a parody of one of Brent’s biggest Trop Rock hits, “Beach In My Backyard”. Mike’s version was a little naughty…but really funny, as you can see from Brent’s expression. He got ambushed.
My Pensacola friend and co-writer Jessie Ritter also played a set, and we had a chance to catch up. She and her book writer husband are raising two kids, and Jessie is still finding time to write and record music.
Just another fun Parrot Head afternoon at Lulu’s.
LAST EVENING
I was at the main stage emceeing with my co-emcee, Krystal King, at the Hangout that has a view of the Gulf. We were officially introduced at this year’s emcee before a very large Parrot Head crowd. Then we introduced a Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show, where several Trop Rock artists came on stage and sang a Jimmy Buffett hit with a great band, "The Boat Drunks".
Then I was back later in the evening and sang “Don’t ComeKnockin’ If The Tiki Hut’s Rockin’” at the Trop Rock Legends show, filling in for Brent Burns.
Pretty amazing show in front of a very large crowd of Parrot Head fans.
SAD NEWS
I did receive some sad news that Betty Salois passed away. Betty and her husband, Paul Salois owned radio station KPCR in Bowling Green, Missouri, and gave me my very first “on air” job in that one-bedroom trailer radio station that sat in a cow pasture. “Kowpasture Kountry Radio”.
Imagine that. Later, the radio station was moved into a brick barn they built, and it’s still there today.
Their hiring me as a kid led to me having a very blessed and long radio career.
I can’t tell you how much fun I had working for Betty and Paul. They changed my life for sure, and I am forever grateful that they took a chance on a young kid and put him on the air. Some of the best days of my life.
My sympathies go to her and her family back in Missouri. RIP
SONG OF THE DAY
Since I mentioned Jessie Ritter earlier, our song of the day is “Gone To See America,” which I wrote with Jessie and Steve Dean, which she recorded. Click on the link to hear the song, and see the great “traveling” video Jessie put together with our song.
HEALTH NOTES
A survey claims that Americans think negatively about their bodies four times a day. And one in six say they avoid social situations because of their bodies.
A new study claims that anti-obesity drugs offer heart health benefits beyond weight loss.
Coca-Cola has just recalled three of its products due to contamination issues. Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Coca-Cola, and Sprite cans.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Since I’m hanging with a sea of Parrot Head fans, this one seems appropriate today.
And some of them are already looking for their “lost shaker of salt”.
SPOOKY
A survey says that nearly two-thirds of us would be willing to buy a haunted house. Wow. Put me in the minority. I can’t afford to call Ghostbusters.
With that, I read that the song “Monster Mash” is the most popular Halloween song of all time. That’s probably right, but the old “Haunted House” song might be my favorite. Recorded in 1964 and the singer is Gene Simmons.
NO EYEBALLS NEEDED
GM announces it will embrace AI with plans to use “eyes off” driving features as early as next year.
Gonna take me a while to get comfortable with that, y’all.
JUST ONE LITTLE DRINK
Carlsberg has just brewed the tiniest beer in history.
12 millimeters and it’s non-alcoholic. It’s about the size of a grain of rice. The company worked with a “tiny” artist (yes…those exist) to promote moderate and responsible drinking. So, if you just need a LITTLE nightcap before going to bed…
SAFE CITIES
Wallet Hub just released its list of “safest” cities to live in. The top 5:
5-Yonkers, NY
4-Juneau, AK
3-Burlington, VT
2-Overland Park, KS
And the safest city is Warwick, Rhode Island.
And the UNSAFEST cities are:
5-Baltimore
4-Detroit
3-Baton Rouge
2-Memphis
And the least safe city in America is New Orleans.
TODAY’S QUOTE
From comedian Gary Shandling:
“My friends tell me I have an intimacy problem. But they don’t really know me.”
TODAY
I’ve got a busy day in front of me here at the MOTM festival. This morning I’ll play a show with Brent Burns at 10:30.
And then I’ll do another short show with Brent at his songwriter series at Lulu’s at 2:30 pm.
And then the rest of the day and evening, I’ll be on stage emceeing shows.
Have a great Thursday!
