Mercy Chefs Concert...One More Day...Subtle Frequency

BILL BLOG

Thursday October 30, 2025

And here comes the last Thursday of the month. Hard to believe that Halloween is tomorrow. 56 for the high here in Nashville today.

MELISSA

As of now, 30 people are reported to be dead after what weather folks are calling the “Storm of the Century” came ashore in Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti. Unreal damage from this Cat 4-5 hurricane.

YESTERDAY

Last evening, I played a little house concert with my friends Linda Davis, Lang Scott, Bobby Tomberlin, and Tess Frizzell for those sponsors and folks who donate to Mercy Chefs.

Mercy Chefs provides 5-star food to disaster workers and those in need. The folks who started this great organization, Gary and Ann LeBlanc, were not there last night, and that’s because they are already on the way to Jamaica to feed folks there.

We had a little of that food ourselves before we started entertaining the guests.

Lang and Linda’s daughter, Ryleee, was there, and we put her to work. She got up and sang the song I wrote with Jimmy Fortune, Sydni Perry, and Rylee's older sister, Hillary Scott, titled “Safe Haven,” which wound up on the Grammy-winning album “Love Remains” by Hillary Scott & the Scott Family. That was a nice moment.

And it was great to hear Tess Frizzell sing the classic duo “You’re The Reason God Made Oklahoma” with Bobby, which was a #1 song for Tess’s mom, Shelly West, and her Dad, Alan Frizzell. Tess’s grandmother is Hall of Famer member Dottie West. And yes, she’s also related to another Hall of Famer, the great Lefty Frizzell.

The audience was so appreciative, and so nice, and certainly made us feel welcome. One lady went out of her way to approach me and tell me how much she appreciated me making her laugh. Pretty great compliment to a guy who writes and sings a lot of funny songs. And a gentleman approached me to tell me that he, too, was a Central Missouri State University Mule, after I mentioned that on stage. That does not happen very often.

It was a pleasure to play for such a great organization last night.

ONE MORE DAY

Bobby Tomberlin is the co-writer of the great song “One More Day,” which he penned with Steven Dale Jones. Last night, Bobby not only played the song that Diamond Rio turned into a smash hit, but also mentioned that the song is celebrating its 25th anniversary. It’s so well written and has touched so many lives through the years.

One more day, one more time

One more sunset, maybe I’ll be satisfied

But then again, I know what it would do

Leave me wishing still, for one more day with you

I never get tired of hearing Bobby sing that classic. With it being the 25th Anniversary of the song, Diamond Rio put together a film about the song and how it changed their lives, and the stories of how this song affected others’ lives. We all have someone or someone’s we wish we could have “One More Day’ with. And some of the band’s stories in this VIDEO about that, will touch your heart. Check it out.

THE AUTHOR

My wife has been working on choosing a picture or two to use when promoting the book she wrote, “Subtle Frequency”.

I think this one might be my favorite.

We are just waiting for the book to go to print, and then Kathy will be doing some book signings and more. So excited for her, and what’s ahead. It’s such a great book, if I do say so myself!

SONG OF THE DAY

I’m choosing the song “Corn” that Darin and Brooke Aldridge recorded, which I wrote with Lisa Shaffer. I had that title stuck in my head for a while and brought it to Lisa’s attention when we sat down to write one morning at her house. I grew up in Missouri, where there are lots of corn fields, and Lisa grew up in northern Kentucky on a farm, and saw her share of corn stalks as well.

I suggested we try to capture the view from a farmhouse that overlooked the countryside and yes…corn. That’s what we wrote. Lisa pitched it to Darin and Brooke, whom I had not previously met. The song has become a crowd favorite for them through the years, and they still play it in their shows. That song led to Darin and Brooke recording a bunch of my songs through the years, so thank you, Lisa, for that introduction to that talented couple who have become great friends.

HEALTH NOTES

A study published in China claims that men have to work twice as hard as women to prevent heart disease, twice the exercise.

A global study finds that obesity cancer is increasing.

A blood test to detect prostate cancer cuts the risk of dying by 13% according to a new study.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Fair warning.

WORLD SERIES

Because I was playing last night, I missed game 5 of the World Series. The Blue Jays are now up 3-2 against the favorite Dodgers, taking 2 out of three games in LA. Wow. The series heads back to Canada now for game 6. Proof perhaps that even if you have the highest payroll in baseball, you can still get beaten.

WHAT HAPPENED TO?

These bad boys?

The old turtleneck dickie that I once wore myself. It seemed SO fashionable at the time. Right along with clip-on ties. With Fall coming on, you can still buy one. The one above will set you back about 50 or 60 bucks.

WHO KNEW?

That Tennessee has armadillos? We do. And the population is growing. The first one migrated to the Rocky Top state some 35 years ago. And they are continuing to show up. I’m sure that some of them migrated here illegally, so ICE may remove some of them. We’ll see.

And with that…I think I’ve finally found my Halloween costume for this year.

TODAY’S QUOTE

From Edgar Bergen:

Hard work never killed anyone, but why take the chance?”

TODAY

Nothing major on tap today. A bit of a lull before a bunch of shows, including this one in Pulaski, Tennessee, Saturday evening for the Rotary Club in Pulaski.

And a road trip to North Carolina come Monday morning for a big showcase for our “Evening in the Round” trio starring Linda Davis with Lang Scott and me.

So I’ll take the downtime!

Have a great Thursday.
