Friday morning in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with a weekend full of Parrot Heads in front of me. 79 for the high in Gulf Shores today. Meanwhile, 50 million Americans are dealing with a frost and freeze waring today.
YESTERDAY
It was another sparkling, clear sky day down on the Gulf Coast.
And the day started early as Brent Burns and I had an hour show at the MOTM festival with the water at our back. And this was a VERY funny moment. Brent is nursing a very bad back after surgery, so the folks at the Hangout, where the festival is located, along with some volunteers, gave Brent Burns a “Kings” kind of entrance to our stage.
And oh yeah, I made some jokes about that during our show! I joked that while the volunteers carried him to the stage, that it was going to be me who carried him through the show.
A very memorable way to start a Thursday.
LULU’S
At 2:30 pm I was back on stage with Brent at Lulu for his songwriter round. But not before Donny Brewer, who was on before me, invited me up to sing “The Jeans Song" that we co-wrote that went on Donny’s last album. That was fun.
And then Brent and I did about a 30-minute set together.
LAST NIGHT
I was emceeing at the Big Stage, bringing on Trop Rock acts starting at 4 pm and wrapping up around 10:30 pm last night.
There was time between acts to have dinner, and even check out a professional sand sculpture professional who put together this Halloween-Pumpkin sand figure.
Pretty amazing. And the artist was there answering questions about her craft.
Yep, she went to “Sand Castle University” according to her T-shirt.
And then there was the beautiful Gulf Coast sunset.
Reason enough to make time to hang out in Gulf Shores sometimes, as I try to do as often as I can. So it was a long, fun day at MOTM yesterday, with today and tomorrow to follow.
SONG OF THE DAY
Today I’m choosing a song I wrote with Jenny Tolman and Dave Brainard that Jenny recorded, “Married In A Honky Tonk”. Jenny is the artist-friend and co-writer I’ve blogged about who is on “The Road” talent contest on CBS right now. The second episode will air Sunday, after Jenny sang one of our song last Sunday on national TV.
I’m choosing this song because the publication, “Saving Country Music,” just reviewed the TV show…and they can be VERY tough critics. This is what the article said about my young friend.
“Jenny Tolman’s 2022 album “Married In A Honkytonk might be the best mix of contemporary and traditional country in years.”
And I am so blessed to have FOUR songs of mine on that project, today’s song being one of those.
HEALTH NOTES
In New York, mini horses are being used to help the elderly with loneliness, depression, and even dementia.
The FDA has recalled over 140,000 bottles of a prescription statin due to “failed dissolution” specifications.
Robots are now making breakthroughs in pregnancy research, and they are boosting IVF success.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
That’s a lot of slapping going on.
DOG NAMES
The top 5 dog names for 2025 are in from the folks at Chewy.
5-Max
4-Lucy
3-Daisy
2-Luna
And the most popular dog name for 2025 is…Bella.
I once named a dog “Jaws”. And it never made the top of any dog name list. Sigh.
COSTUMES
Google search reveals that the most popular Halloween costume for the year will be KPop Demon Hunters, from the Netflix kids’ show.
I think I was pretty much dressed up as a ghost in a bedsheet most Halloweens. Can’t beat the classics.
NBA
And now the NBA has a big-time gambling situation with a Hall of Famer, a coach, and a player all being indicted yesterday. If it’s a sport, people will gamble, and people, even players who have made a lot of money, will be tempted to cheat while bettors rake in millions.
I’m waiting now for the big Pickleball illegal betting story. People will have their little paddles removed, and it’s off to jail. It could happen!
WORLD SERIES
It starts tonight. Dodgers vs Toronto. I’m going to be so busy here with the Parrot Heads that I’m going to miss the first couple of games. Gonna be hard to topple the 420 million dollar payroll Dodgers. But you never know.
I watched the Cincinnati Reds topple the mighty Oakland A’s in 4 straight games back in 1990… I was at both games in Cincinnati. And the A’s were a HEAVY favorite. I guess that’s why they play the games, right?
TODAY’S QUOTE
From Erma Bombeck:
“When my kids become wild and unruly, I use a nice, safe playpen. When they’re finished, I climb out.”
TODAY
A REALLY busy day on tap. At 1 pm, I’m playing a songwriter show hosted by Thom Shepherd.
The second that’s done, I’ll be racing to present a trophy to the Trop Rock Radio Station of the Year at this year’s Trop Rock Awards show.
And after I hand over that trophy, it’s back to the Main Stage to emcee tonight’s events for the Parrot Heads at MOTM.
Then Saturday, I have one show hosted by friend Kelly McGuire, and then one more full day emceeing for the festival, before finally heading back home to Nashville on Sunday.
It’s been a great and very fun run of shows here on the Gulf Coast over these past 11 days at both “Blast On The Bay” in Port St. Joe, and “MOTM” here in Gulf Shores. It’s going to feel great though to get to put my head on my own pillow though back home.
Have a great weekend!
