BILL BLOG

Monday September 15, 2025

Man, the weekend flies, doesn’t it? It’s Monday morning and it will be warm in Music City, with a high today of 89.

THE WEEKEND

Friday morning, I THOUGHT I would be writing with Jerry Salley and Alex Miller, only to find out that I did not write down the correct date. I had made a 30-minute trip to my publishing company only to have nobody to write with but me. So that’s what I did. I sat and wrote an idea I’ve had into an up-tempo bluegrass number, the kind the publishing company is always looking for.

In the music business, a publisher will rarely ask a writer for a ballad. It’s always “tempo” that they are seemingly looking for.  So, I followed protocol on Friday morning and made good use of the time. And the day wasn’t a waste after all.

FRIDAY NIGHT

I wound up in a living room full of songwriters sharing songs and stories. Ginny Foley is a lover of songwriters, and three or four times a year, she opens the door to her house, spreads out a feast, and invites songwriters in to play. Friday night, Linda Davis came, as did Hall of Fame songwriter Jerry Foster, and my great friend Jim Parker, who runs a great songwriter show in Huntsville, Alabama, which I’ve played several times, along with others.

Here’s a little VIDEO of me singing next to my friend and touring partner, Linda Davis, trying out a new song, “What Are You Waiting For,” that I wrote with Brian White and Don Poythress.

Just a bunch of friends, in a circle, in a living room. Great fun. And thank you for having me again, Ginny.

THE ROAD

It’s going to get really busy for the months ahead. I got this poster yesterday promoting an “Evening In The Round” show with Linda Davis and Lang Scott.

And the night before, December 6, we’ll be at the Valley Bible Church in Stephens City, Virginia, for the “Faith, Love and Laughter Concert”…our third time getting to do this.

SONG OF THE DAY

Katrina Burgoyne, my Aussie friend who moved here to the States, just released her new single “Stones” over the weekend. I’ve posted some teases of this fun, edgy tune here a couple of times, but now you can listen to the entire song by hitting the link above. Thank you, Katrina!

HEALTH NOTES

Pfizer and Moderna shares plunged over the weekend with news that Trump officials plan to link 25 child deaths to the COVID vaccine.

Survey says, nearly 12% are on a weight loss drug like Ozempic, with prescriptions tripling since 2020. Nearly half come off the drug within a year of starting, and many gain all their weight back when they stop taking it.

Research claims that precise brain stimulation may offer faster relief for depression.

THINGS I THOUGHT I’D NEVER SEE IN PRINT

Jellyroll Meets The Pope”. (Sound like it should be a sitcom, doesn’t it?)

AFFORDABLE HOMES

There are still cities in this country where one can buy a home for under $300,000. Not many, but some. The median home price in Springfield, Illinois, is the lowest, at $215,000. Others under $300 grand include Erie, Pennsylvania, Toledo, Ohio, Akron, Ohio, Rockport, Illinois, Canton, Ohio, and Rochester, New York.

The Buckeye State appears to be a good place for affordable homes.

MARRIAGE QUOTE

I once gave my husband the silent treatment for an entire week, and at the end of which he declared, ‘Hey, we’re getting along pretty great lately!”

COFFIN

In the country of Ghana, they make “fantasy” coffins…like this one.

And this one.

And yes, you can be buried in a tennis shoe…in your tennis shoes.

Me? I’m from the Midwest. So put me in this bad boy when I go.

TODAY’S HEADLINE

TODAY

I’m back in a writing room with my buddy Alex Miller today. Always fun hanging out with this young man.

Have a great Monday!

Pensacola...Writing With A Friend....Happy Memorial Day

BILL BLOG Monday May 26, 2025  And a good Memorial Day Monday morning to you from Pensacola, Florida.   THE WEEKEND Mine started Saturday morning by jumping the car with Steve Dean and making the trip from Nashville down here to beautiful Pensacola for this event with Freedom Sings USA.   The event was held at Warrior Beer Company in Pensacola, owned by veteran Gary Hefner .   We rolled into Pensacola around 5 pm Friday, dropped our bags at the hotel, and then made our way over to the Warrior Beer Company for a little meet and greet with our veterans.   Imagine my surprise when I found out that a long-time friend of mine, Larry Hudson , from nearby Gulf Shores, would be the veteran I would be writing with. More on that in a bit.     After our dinner, our songwriter group got on stage and sang a few songs.   After we wrapped up, we headed to a favorite Irish Pub, “McGuire’s,” and closed out the ...

New Song Recorded...Lulu...Book On The Way

BILL BLOG Friday April 25, 2025   Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday once again. A high of 71 today with more rain on the way.   YESTERDAY I wrote with young Taylon Hope for the first time in a long while. Taylon is now a Sophomore at Belmont, University here in Nashville, and she’s chasing her musical dreams. We were to write in person and then one of her professors scheduled a test that would have conflicted so we wrote online instead and created a fun song for her that will be something she can add to her set list when she’s out performing “live”.   I’m rooting for some of her dreams to come true as I am so many other young talents in this crazy creative town.   BURN ME DOWN An American Idol contestant from a year ago, Kennedy Reid reached out to me a few months ago through a producer friers asking for songs for consideration for an album she was going to record. I sent three or 4 songs and ,she recorded one of those that I w...

Home Again...Hamburger Day...Dollywood

BILL BLOG Wednesday May 28, 2025   Wednesday morning, and I’m back home in Nashville. Sunshine with a high of just 79 here in Nashville today.   YESTERDAY A long drive home from Pensacola from our Freedom Sings USA songwriters retreat with our veterans. 2 traffic jams with detours, and one last traffic jam as I was 5 miles away. So, a normal 7 to 8 hour drive took 9 to get home this time. But we made it safe and sound with a bag full of great memories from the Memorial Day weekend, honoring those who gave so much. And what a pleasure it was getting to write with my friend and Viet Nam veteran Larry Hudson who had quite the story to tell that we turned into a song.   NEXT UP Our next Freedom Sings USA weekend will be in the small town of Heyworth, Illinois June 18 and 19. We were there last year, and it seemed like the entire town showed up on the night all the writers performed those songs we wrote with their veterans. We are certainl...
