Friday morning is here with a weekend coming up. Up to 89 degrees here in Nashville today, mid-90s this weekend.
YESTERDAY
Something a little different writing-wise yesterday. My writing appointment was with Brady Seals and Lauren Mascitti. Both of them can sing almost anything, and often do. Brady, who made his name with groups like Little Texas and Hot Apple Pie, has also released several solo albums. He’s on the road these days singing the songs of the late Tom Petty in a Petty Tribute Band, and also is half of the duo Seals & Crofts 2 with Lua Crofts, Daughter of Dash Crofts.
I was blessed to have Seals & Crofts 2 record "Runnin' To The Sun" that I wrote with Brady.
And Brady is related to Jim Seals, Dan Seals, and the Hall of Fame writer Troy Seals. So…he really can do anything musically.
So, Brady says he’s playing around with recording a blues album, so I got to write a really cool Mississippi-Chicago blues song that just rocks. The most fun I’ve had writing a song with anyone in a while. I’m going to have to get myself a “blues” artist name now. “Mudslide Bill” is what I’m thinking. What ya think?
LAST NIGHT
I snuck out and caught one last Sounds baseball game. Hard to believe the season is ending. The last game in town will be this Saturday. I like football, but I’ll still take baseball if given a choice. Last night, there was a moment of silence to honor the somber occasion of 9/11.
Nicely done by the Sounds. And then our guys got a walk-off home run to win the game—pretty good night at the ole Ballyard.
Reflecting on 9/11 during that moment of silence last night, I could not help but think about Alan Jackson’s song “Where Were You” that he played for the very first time during the CMA Awards that year. I was on the radio at the time, on WSM-FM in Nashville. Like almost every country radio station in America, the next morning, we pulled the audio from the TV and played this song on the air. Alan would later get into the studio to record it. If for some reason you missed that moment…here’s the VIDEO.
COMING UP
Next week will be busy, as I will be in Chattanooga attending the IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) big gathering for the very first time. I’ll be there next Wednesday and Thursday, October 17 & 18. Thursday night, I’ll be at the awards show as “Blue Collar Gospel” from Jerry Salley and the Oak Ridge Boys is up for “Gospel-Bluegrass Song of the Year that I co-wrote with Rick Lang and Jerry Salley.
Then next Saturday at noon, I’ll be at the Country Music Hall of Fame with my buddy Steve Dean for the noon songwriter show inside the beautiful Ford Theater.
I think this might be the 5th time that Steve and I have done this together, and it’s always a great experience. We play for 45 minutes, and there’s a question-answer session within our little songwriter show where tourist from all over the world can raise their hands and ask a question. Our show is free with a museum admission ticket.
SONG OF THE DAY
I’m emceeing the big Parrot Head event that is MOTM (Meeting of the Minds) coming up in October. The biggest Trop Rock event of the year is now on the beaches of Gulf Shores. I’ll also be playing some shows, and at least one of those will be with my long-time Trop Rock Grandfather, Brent Burns. (Don’t tell him I said that)
So I’d choose “My Jukebox On The Beach,” which I wrote with Brent, that is the title track of one of his albums that won the Trop Rock Album of the Year a few years ago. The song is all about the kind of songs Brent would put on his Wurlitzer at the beach, and the name of some of the Trop Rock artists that would be part of that jukebox.
HEALTH NOTES
Apple will release a watch next week that will be able to detect hypertension.
Texas is seeing an explosion of cases of typhus, a disease that, if untreated, can be fatal. Typhus was mostly eradicated in the US at one point, but is making a comeback.
Common prescription drugs have been linked to a surge in fall-related death rates among seniors.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Uh-huh.
INCOME
The median income now in the US is $81,604, up 2% from last year. The highest incomes are found in Massachusetts, with a median salary there of $104,828. The lowest median price is in the state of Mississippi at just $59,127. Of course, the cost of living in Mississippi is MUCH lower than the cost of living out on the East Coast…so there’s that.
21 states had no rise in income.
NO GATORS ALLOWED
A Walmart store in Pennsylvania would not allow a guy in with his “emotional support” alligator. Makes common sense to me. If I walked into a store and saw a dude with an emotional support gator? I would need some kind of emotional support myself.
I’m pretty sure I would soil my jeans if I saw that. I think jeans are on aisle 7, aren’t they?
TODAY’S HEADLINE
Death May Ease Tension. (Pretty sure that’s accurate)
TODAY
I’m writing with Jerry Salley and Alex Miller today at my publishing company. A last-second booking.
Then tonight I’m at a friend’s house gathering with some musicians for a little in-house picking and singing. A bunch of songwriters and singers take turns passing the guitar around. Always fun.
And then it’s the weekend!
Have a great weekend yourself.
