Singing and Playing With Ricky...Mouth of the South...Mother's Day Cards

Thursday it is…all day.

Crazy weather across the country for early May. In South Texas, they’re asking folks to stay indoors because of the extreme heat. Meanwhile, in the Rockies, there was a huge snowstorm.

Here in Nashville, it’s cool, with a high of just 66 today.

YESTERDAY

I got to catch up with Pennsylvania friend Troy Engle for the first time since he joined “Kentucky Thunder”, Ricky Skagg’s great band.

Troy is playing a lot of different instruments for Ricky: fiddle, banjo, steel guitar, guitar, dobro, mandolin, and whatever else Ricky might need. And he’s singing harmony as well. Did I mention how talented Troy is? This is Troy sitting behind the steel guitar with the band.

I’m so happy for my friend, as this was his dream job. He’s already played for Eric Church, Tom T. Hall, The Isaacs, and others, but this was the one job that he wanted so much that he was willing to say yes again. And, he and his wife are going to be moving back to Nashville this July, so I’ll get to write with him in person a lot more.

Troy told me, before we wrote a new bluegrass song yesterday, that every night during Ricky’s show, Ricky has him come up and sing a song that the two of us wrote, “Back Home.” Way cool. Ricky is playing at the Ryman in a couple of months, and I plan on being in one of those old church pews to see and hear Ricky, and to see and hear Troy sing our song on that iconic stage.

It was a good day yesterday!

SONG OF THE DAY

Dailey and Vincent will also be playing at the Ryman soon as part of the “Bluegrass Series,” and they will be singing their new single, “Moon Shines On The Still,” which I wrote with Laura Leigh Jones. I think I’m going to have to get tickets for that night as well. And that’s my song choice today for the “Song of the Day.”

HEALTH NOTES

A Swiss man has tested positive for the hantavirus after returning from the cruise that’s been linked to a deadly outbreak.

Experts say that for people over 60, intensive blood pressure lowering may prevent more heart problems than standard therapy.

A study suggests that increasing your daily steps may boost recovery after surgery.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Kind of says it all, doesn’t it?

TED TURNER

The “Mouth of the South” died at the age of 87. The visionary who started a 24-hour news cable channel at CNN, owned the Braves, owned the Atlanta Hawks, was a champion sailor, started the Goodwill Games, married Jane Fonda, and so much more.

He once said, “I know what I’m having ‘em put on my tombstone: ‘I have nothing more to say.

RIP

MOTHER’S DAY CARDS

Have you picked yours out of the Hallmark rack yet?  Choose carefully. I would not choose this card for Mom.

Or this one.

And definitely NOT this one.

MONEY ADVICE

Not all advice is good. These are not so great.

If you have no money, you never have to worry about paying for anything.

Don’t accept a raise that puts you in a higher tax bracket; you’ll have less money than before.”

And then there’s this piece of advice that was given to a young professional:

Stop saving money. Saving is for losers with no ambition. Gambling is better.

Be careful who you take economic advice from.

MOVING

Lots of folks are moving to Texas and Florida, moving for lower taxes and a better quality of life. We’ve got plenty of folks moving to Tennessee as well.

But there’s a state receiving more newcomers than any other: South Carolina.

WITH THAT IN MIND

I’m looking forward to being in South Carolina for two “Evening in the Round” shows with Linda Davis and Lang Scott in early 2027.

Thursday, January 21, in Newberry, South Carolina, and Friday, January 22, in beautiful Beaufort, South Carolina.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From Michael Jordan:

I’ve failed over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed.

TODAY

I’m back at the songwriting table with my friend Caroline Owens today, uh, “fishing for a hit”. We’ll see what we land.

Have a great Thursday!
