BILL BLOG
Thursday, April 2, 2026
Thursday morning has arrived. And it’s going to be warm with an 86-degree high.
Today’s blog is being posted later than normal, as I had a late night last night.
LAST NIGHT
I had a great songwriter show last night at the Station Inn with a couple of really great songwriters, Larry Cordle and Bobby Tomberlin. The Station Inn is normally a “stage” show, but for Larry’s Songwriter Shows, which he does every so many weeks, he sets up the writer on the floor in a true “round.”
Man, the stories told alone last night were worth the price of admission. And then getting to hear Bobby sing what will be Willie Nelson’s next single "Dream Chaser" and hearing Larry talk about the huge Ricky Skaggs hit “Highway 40 Blues” that was Larry’s first hit in Nashville, was priceless. I think we played for 2 and a half hours last night, and the time just flew by.
Larry told us he’ll be calling me and Bobby again to do an encore. Can’t wait. Thanks to Larry for including me, to the Station Inn for having us, and to the great crowd who hung with us the entire evening.
SONG OF THE DAY
Since I played a show with Bobby Tomberlin, here’s the song that he and I wrote with our friend Linda Davis, “Looking For Audrey”. Bobby recorded this song on one of his albums, but so did Bobby Mackey, a longtime friend of mine up near Cincinnati who’s been playing country music in his own club, “Mackey’s” forever.
I sent Bobby the song, and he fell completely in love with this song that’s all about Hank Williams ghost going to the same bar, night after night, looking for Audrey, his wife. They had a volatile relationship, but despite that, most felt Hank never got over Audrey leaving him. So, here’s Bobby Mackey’s great VERSION of our song.
NEXT SHOW
That will be in Anna, Illinois, with Freedom Sings USA coming up April 16-18.
Several other songwriters and I will once again sit with a veteran and turn their stories into a song. And then those songs will be performed in a concert on that Saturday night to honor those veterans and their families. That free concert will be held at East Davie Park in Anna. Looking forward to that.
HEALTH NOTES
Scientists in Ireland agree with a stack of research that suggests vitamin D can possibly lower the risk of dementia.
Scientists have concluded that blue-eyed people (like me) ascended from one European who lived some 6000 to 10,000 years ago. Hmm…don’t think I’ve ever seen this person in my family tree.
A study links exposure to agricultural pesticides to cancer risk.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
There’s some sound biblical reasoning there.
TIS THE SEASON
The bluebells pop out from now until early May. There are a lot of those in Texas. I’m not a big flower guy, but the bluebells might be my favorite. My wife and I married our daughter in Ireland several years ago, and my wife did a VRBO thing in a castle.
And on the castle grounds, we found this little spot where the bluebells colored the landscape.
Might be part of the reason I like bluebells.
MEDIAN WAGE
They just determined that the median wage in the US is now $62,088. Pretty sure it would take about that much just to be able to pay the bills. Especially with gas now 4 bucks a gallon and up.
TO THE MOON
And the Artemis did have “lift off” last night. We’re on the way to the moon…again. I was in college the first time we landed on the lunar surface, and I remember watching it in black and white in a dorm area with a bunch of buddies. Should be spectacular watching this crew do the same, in living color.
CATS
Some owners love to dress their cats up in costumes and little hats. The “why” of that is beyond me. I’d just say, please don’t dress your cat like this:
Or this:
And please resist putting this on Fifi’s little head at Easter.
Thank you.
DOLLY’S NEW PLACE
I was in downtown Nashville a couple of days ago and caught sight of Dolly Parton’s new hotel, “The Storyteller Hotel” which will open this Fall.
And now we find out that there will also be a Dolly Museum in the hotel named the “Life of Many Colors Museum.” One of the items visitors will see is Dolly’s touring bus.
I’m betting her hotel is going to be busy.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
To Jonathan the tortoise, who just turned 200 years old. The longest living land creature.
He’s spent most of his slow-moving life in St. Helena, a British territory in the South Atlantic.
Think how long Jonathan has been collecting a Social Security check!
QUOTE OF THE DAY
Unknown:
“Do more things that make you forget to check your phone.” Love that.
TODAY
I’ll be in a writing room again today with Brian White and Andrea Pearson, our second co-write together. I’ll be in some talented company for sure.
Have a great Thursday!
