How Great Thou Art...New Shows...Songwriter Show Tonight

BILL BLOG

Wednesday, April 1, 2026

It’s the first day of April, and it’s a “hump day” Wednesday. We will hit a high of 83 in Nashville today, but by Sunday, the high will be only 62.

And, it’s April Fool’s Day. Beware.

YESTERDAY

I had a great day writing with Brady Seals, Spencer Hatcher, and his younger brother, Connor, yesterday. It was the second song this foursome has written.

The first time we gathered, we wrote a duet; this one is a fun up-tempo country song along the lines of Alan Jackson or Zach Top. The kind of “real” country that seems to be returning to country radio, and that’s refreshing to hear. Spencer is an artist on Quartz Hill Records, and that’s the kind of young artist he is…country. With real roots in it. He’s working on his first album, and of course, we hope this song will get strong consideration for that project.

We’ll see.

LAST NIGHT

My wife and I caught up with the last episode of American Idol. They have some really great young talent once again on the show. But the highlight of last evening’s “Gospel-Theme” show for me was Carrie Underwood singing “How Great Thou Art” with a few former American Idols. It brought the house down. I’m not sure anyone sings that song better than Carrie. If you missed it, here’s the VIDEO.  Goosebumps.

NEW SHOW DATES

This September, our Evening in the Round Show starring Linda Davis, with Lang Scott and me, will be making a little run out west.

On September 3, we will be in beautiful Alto, New Mexico, at the gorgeous Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts Center. Alto is next to Ruidoso, New Mexico, tucked up in the mountains. Beautiful scenery.

Half of this show will be our acoustic songwriter show, which we normally do, but the other half of the show will be with a full band. We did this kind of show at this same theater several years ago, and I’m excited that we get to do this again.

And on September 4, we will play the Wagner Noel in  Midland-Odessa, Texas, another great venue that we also played several years ago.

Details on both of these shows are being confirmed, and as soon as they are, I’ll have all the details in the TOUR section of my website.

SONG OF THE DAY

Since I wrote with Brady Seals yesterday, here’s a song that Brady recorded that we co-wrote, from a title that came after something my wife said in conversation. Check out “Deeper Shade of Blue Collar”

HEALTH NOTES

A study suggests that brain cancer may respond to high-dose vitamin therapy.

And another study finds that heart attack damage can be reversed with injectable RNA therapy.

And yet one more study claims smoking weed and tobacco actually shrinks your brain.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

I will admit, I’m not smart enough to understand that one.

CHANGE THE RIBBON

How about this? A teacher at Cornell University who sits her students down once a semester at a typewriter (remember those?) to experience writing with no AI help. Break out the “white out” and the carbon paper. I’m guessing it’s the first time many of those students had ever seen a typewriter.

I seem to remember learning to type on one of these bad boys in High School.

And an old Royal typewriter. For some reason, I took right to it, and was one of the fastest typers in the class. Perhaps an indication of how much writing I would be doing in my life. I have to say, I don’t miss typewriters all that much. And typing on my computer lets me walk away without any black on my fingers from changing the danged ribbon.

LOVE THIS

Anyone else grow up this way? Heck, I can even remember making milk toast with bread. Toast the bread, put it in a bowl of milk, and add sugar or cinnamon. Still sounds good to me today.

TO THE MOON

We’re going back to the moon today on Artemis II. First time in 50 years. Launch time is roughly 6:30 p.m. Eastern this evening.

Meanwhile, anyone can book a space ride on Billionaire Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic craft if they have $750,000. Wow. I think I’ll hitchhike to the moon.

BALLPARK DESSERT

Check out what the Yankees are selling at all their home games this year.

They call it a “chicken bucket”, but Colonel Sanders has nothing to do with this. It’s ice cream, shaped as a drumstick. Chocolate, white chocolate, and candied cornflakes are all involved. The reported price is $100. Wow. Well, you do get to keep the bucket it came in…so there’s that.

SPEAKING OF BASEBALL

The Seattle Mariners just gave a top prospect baseball player $95 million. And he hasn’t played a game in the Major Leagues yet. It’s an 8-year contract for 20-year-old Colt Emerson. And yes, that’s the largest contract ever given to any kid who has not played a game in the Big Leagues.

I should have spent more time in the batting cage when I was young!

MOVING

Folks are leaving California because of the high cost of living. Taxes alone are sky high. If a person earning $500,000 a year in California leaves and moves to Florida, tax friendly, they will save $50,000 annually. Between New Yorkers and Californians moving to the Sunshine State, Florida could get pretty crowded.

NOT MOVING

That would be folks in the TSA lines at airports. Check this guy out.

He’s passing out vodka shots at the Houston Airport, as folks in that TSA line had to wait 4 hours to get through TSA. That might have eased a little pain and anger for a few folks.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

No Author:

Keep your feet on the ground, but let your heart soar as high as it will.”

TONIGHT

I’ll be at the Station Inn tonight at 8 pm with hit songwriters Larry Cordle and Bobby Tomberlin. Both have too many hits to count. And I feel lucky to be hanging with them and telling stories tonight. It should be a great evening swapping songs in the round.

Have a great Wednesday!
