Trees...March Madness...Show Last Night

BILL BLOG

Monday, March 30, 2026

The last Monday in March has arrived. A high of 77 with sunshine today in Nashville, and then we will be in the 80’s for the rest of the week.

THE WEEKEND

Mine started with watching a couple of our BIG trees get cut down. And watching the guys do that with their ropes, chainsaws, and climbing ability was truly unreal, and a show.

Watching them drop a really big pine tree just off our back deck, and making it land EXACTLY where they wanted it to, safely away from the deck, the house, and other trees, was just amazing. And now we have a different view for sure out of both the front and back windows. All of this was done because of that crippling ice storm that left us without power for six days and brought down so many trees and limbs in Nashville. My hats off to the men and women who remove trees.

ROBOT UMPIRES

Watching my Reds play baseball over the weekend, and in Saturday’s game, C.B. Bucknor, the home plate umpire, was wrong 6 out of 8 times. Wow. I’ve always thought that umpires were right most of the time. But the new ABS using a robo-ump doesn’t lie. The batters apparently have a better idea of the strike zone, at least early in the season. It’s pretty amazing to watch. And embarrassing if you’re that umpire.

 MARCH MADNESS

I was listening to music last night when this insane MOMENT happened during the U-Conn vs Duke Elite 8 matchup. This is truly March Madness. Duke was WAY ahead at one point, and somehow U-Conn came all the way back.

One of the most amazing comebacks in March Madness history. Wow. And now we have our Final 4. Illinois, U-Conn, Arizona, and Michigan.

LAST NIGHT

Steve Dean and I played the West Haven Concert series in Franklin, Tennessee for the second time.

We could not have had a better time telling stories and playing our original songs. We had a terrific crowd, who gave us such a warm reception. Thank you to the organizer Kelly Nakamoto for having us again this year.

NEW SHOW

I’m going to be back at the Station Inn again in Nashville for another songwriter show this Wednesday evening. Larry Cordle is now hosting songwriter shows there once a month, with him hosting, and he’s pairing me with my friend Bobby Tomberlin as his guests on Wednesday night.

That’s going to be a heck of a songwriter show, and I did ask him on the phone when he was inviting me if it was an April Fool’s joke, as it is on the evening of April 1. He promised me that it’s not a joke.

It will be fun for me to hear Bobby sing his big hits like “One More Day,” and to hear Larry sing “Highway 40 Blues,” “Murder on Music Row,” and so many others.

I’m honored that he’d ask me, and I’m very much looking forward to Wednesday night.

SUBTLE FREQUENCY

My wife’s first-ever book, “Subtle Frequency,” available everywhere is receiving some nice praise from folks who have read it.

I am SO SO very proud of my dear friend Kathy Whyte! Her first book, Subtle Frequency, is published and for sale on Amazon and in select bookstores. It is a kidnapping mystery with a new and exciting twist that you MUST read to see for yourself! As I am a very avid reader and love a good mystery, her book did not read like a first-time author, but as a seasoned one. Please share with your friends as I am doing here. And go buy her book!

Thank you, Denise!

SONG OF THE DAY

Since I played a show with Steve Dean last night, here’s a song the two of us wrote with a young writer at the time, Daisy Mallory, that both Daisy recorded, and Kristy Cox recorded. This version of our song “Train” is from Daisy.

HEALTH NOTES

Experts warn that we are in for an especially bad allergy season this year.

Researchers claim that cooking at least once a week at home may cut dementia risk by as much as 67%.

A new study suggests that Yaks may hold the key to treating MS patients because of a gene they have. That’s right…these guys.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Ain’t that the truth? And wear clean underwear, just in case.

TIGER

Sad story, Tiger Woods arrested for yet another DUI in Florida, rolling his car over. He was released shortly after, but obviously, there’s a problem there. And it easily could have been a lot worse. And the jokes have started.

A radio friend quipped that “He shouldn’t even drive a Callaway.”

Here’s hoping Tiger can find a way to kick an obvious bad habit. He influences so many and has so many fans around the world. Heck, he even inspired Cledus T. Judd and me to write this parody video about him titled “Man Crush.”

TSA

The long lines at airports have created a new job—place-holding concierges. For $25 an hour or more, someone with a suitcase loaded with junk will hold your place in the TSA line. And with lines this long…

It could be a booming business.

CHOCOLATE GRAVY

Who knew there was such a delicious thing?

It’s so popular that a Chocolate Gravy Festival was held over the weekend in the small town of Celina, Tennessee, about 2 hours northeast of Nashville. There was chocolate gravy tasting, eating, biscuit making, and more to celebrate chocolate gravy.

Something to put on your calendar for next year.

SQUIRELLY

I won't argue with that...she's a squirrel.

NOISE CAMERAS

NYC has had “noise” cameras since 2021.

If your car is too loud, you’ll get a ticket in the mail. Fines range from $800 to as much as $2,500. Now, Chicago, Miami, and Washington DC are set to join them. Decibel ranges seem to vary, but if you’re hitting 75 decibels or more? Look for a fine in your mailbox.

ONLY IN NASHVILLE

Carrie Underwood and her husband, former Predators hockey player Mike Fisher, attended a game over the weekend to honor their “bobblehead doll” night.

You know you’ve arrived when your head bobbles.

EXPENSIVE JAVA

More than any item on the grocery shelf, coffee has jumped the most in price. Up 18.4% over the last year. Tariffs, a drought shortage, and the Iran War are all being listed as part of the blame.

I think I’ll see if I can grow coffee beans in the backyard.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From Robert A. Heinlein:

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

TODAY

Nothing big today. I’m hoping to take advantage of this perfect 77-degree day with sunshine and get out in it a bit.

Have a great Monday!
