Young Talent..."More Country Than You"...Route 66

BILL BLOG

Tuesday January 6, 2026

And a good Tuesday morning to you. We are expecting a high of 65 degrees today in Nashville and keeping a close eye on the forecast for severe storms that may approach on Friday. The unseasonably warm weather we are having may have something to do with that.

YESTERDAY

I had the pleasure of writing with a couple of young, talented folks, Alex Miller and Sonny French.

Sonny was just two days back from a 2-week Australian tour with his Dad and Mom with the “French Family Band”.

He talked a bit about the severe jet lag he had, as it’s a really long way to the “Down Under”. And I think his pants were still in the laundry, so the just turned 19-year-old showed up in a pair of shorts and Ugg-like boots. Do you think we may have teased him about that?!

Alex brought the idea into the room that we wrote yesterday, and one of the great benefits of writing with these two is getting to hear them play their guitars as the song progresses and finally finishes. Good stuff. Blessed to be in the room with those two yesterday.

MORE COUNTRY THAN YOU

Yesterday, Alex told me that his duet with “The Voice Star” Emily Ann Roberts has now been streamed over 800,000 times between the song video and the video teasers of the song.

The three of us wrote “More Country Than You” several years ago from an idea I had that this kind of song could work for them. Has it ever! Here’s one of the TEASERS that shows off the fun chemistry between the two of them.

Last night Alex called to tell me that Billy Jam Records, his record label, has decided to name his upcoming album after our song, which will be released in a few months. Cool.

If you have not yet heard this song, click on the link above and listen to the back-and-forth musical argument between Kentucky native Alex Miller and Tennessee native Emily Ann Roberts.

SONG OF THE DAY

Here’s a song written with Shay Watson and Joe Nash back when the two of them had a great duo going called Watson-Nash. This one is “Up On The Wheel,” which we wrote in Shay’s tiny apartment many years ago, that went on one of the two albums the boys put out.

HEALTH NOTES

The CDC announced yesterday a major overhaul of the U.S. childhood vaccine schedule, reducing the number of routine immunizations recommended for children.

Elon Musk is planning to mass-produce brain implants for paralysis and neurological disease. The Neuralink device has already been implanted in 12 people with severe paralysis.

According to data, about two-thirds of Americans suffer from frequent gastrointestinal issues.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Pretty clever church sign.

HOROSCOPES AND TRAVELING

I’m not a horoscope reader. Truly not my thing. But this morning I read an article from Condé Nast that tells you where you should travel according to your “sign”. I had to look.

Mine chose Route 66 for me. I have to admit…that’s a part of the country I love. Williams, Arizona, right on historic Route 66.

That’s where the Grand Canyon Railway departs from every day to head to the south rim of the Grand Canyon and back. It’s the train on which I performed on two different years singing tunes while the train rolled down the tracks. Just singing songs to the tourists from all around the globe who were on board the train.

If you’re ever near Williams, you should jump on the train. It’s a great experience.

Here’s the entire ARTICLE so that you can see where you “sign” is telling you to go.

LIGHTNING

For years, Florida was the state with the lightning capital of the US. This year, Oklahoma overtook it. Although Oklahoma had more flashes, Florida had more deaths from lightning strikes. If you’ve ever been close to a lightning bolt hitting, you know how scary that can be. We had one hit a tree in our backyard last year, and the sound of that bolt hitting so close had me asking my wife to get the defibrillator machine.

SOME KIND OF LOLLIPOP

The big CES Convention (Consumer Electronics Show) is kicking off in Vegas. All the new electronic gadgets will be on display. Expect to see a lot of robots.

But the item that grabbed my attention would be the Lollipop Star.

You start licking on your lollipop, and it starts playing music. True. And now I’m wondering if I can get a few of those “pops” to play some of my songs. Imagine licking a lemon Lollipop Star and hearing “I’m Going Ugly Early Tonight”!  Or not.

UP UP AND UP

The stock market jumped 700 points yesterday on the news of Maduro being captured. It’s now at 49,000 for the first time.  It always amazes me what makes the market go up or down.

I like what stock expert Garry Fitchett says. “Stock market investing: First you get bitten by what you don’t know, then you are eaten alive by what you do know.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From Douglas Adams, who was a humorist and screenwriter:

I love deadlines. I love the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

TODAY

For the first time in a long while, I’ll be writing with Belinda Smith today. Belinda is a great Christian songwriter-singer, and she has the Dove Awards on her shelf to prove it. Looking forward to creating with her again this morning.

Have a great Tuesday!
