Writing With Keys...Tourist Trap City...New Writer Today

BILL BLOG

Wednesday January 14, 2026

Here comes another “Hump Day” Wednesday. We’ve hit a cooling trend in Nashville as today’s high will be 45, but we dip into the 30’s for most of the rest of the week—just a 32-degree high tomorrow.

Meanwhile, 11 states are under winter storm warnings. So, I won’t complain about the weather here in the mid-south.

YESTERDAY

Caroline Owens brought a wonderful song idea into the writing room yesterday morning. One of those ideas that made me grateful to be in that room yesterday morning.

Caroline is becoming a major female bluegrass artist, and during her “live” shows, she mostly plays acoustic guitar. And she plays it well. But yesterday, she sat behind the piano and took something that was “pretty good” to another level.

I love every chance I get to write with anyone who plays piano. Mostly because 80% of my writing is done with guitars in the room, but a piano lets you take a song to a place that a guitar can’t sometimes. That was certainly the case yesterday.

I am extremely high on this song, and I’m hoping it might be one Caroline records somewhere down the road. It was just a pleasure to write with her.

SONG OF THE DAY

I’m selecting the Laura Leigh Jones song “Sun Can’t Stop The Rain” again today because we have found out that Sirius-XM is still playing the heck out of this song. The most-played song on the “Bluegrass Junction” channel last month and it’s showing no signs of slowing down.

This is a song I wrote with Laura several years ago, which is her first single from her upcoming album that will have a couple other of our co-writes on it. Thank you Laura.

HEALTH NOTES

A new study reveals that breastfeeding can lower the risks of mental health issues up to 10 years after pregnancy.

Another study says that 6 in 10 Americans have become less interested in alcohol since first trying it, a transition that starts on average at age 32. 63% of those from the Gen Z generation are saying that.

The CDC is urging those 50 and older to get a shingles shot.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Man, you have GOT to change the bulbs every now and then!

WE ARE A TOURIST TRAP

InsureAndGo.com just listed the worst tourist trap cities in the world. Here are their top 5 choices.

5…Hobart, Australia

4…NASHVILLE

3…Vegas

2…Venice

And the worst tourist trap city, according to them, is Chicago.

I can’t imagine why Nashville finished so high. Just because we have an endless supply of honkytonks and people riding these things down the middle of the street, screaming and drinking?

Nope, I have no idea why Music City was chosen.

SPEAKING OF CITIES

I may have to go back home to Missouri with my gear and help St. Louis capture animals. It’s been a big story about monkeys being on the loose for a few days, and they can’t seem to capture. Yesterday, they announced that a goat is roaming the streets somewhere in the city as well.

What in the world is going on back there?  I’m taking my pith helmet and “catching device” to see if I can help.

NOT A CITY

No, you can’t call Monowi, Nebraska, a city. You can barely call it a “small town”. How small a town? Someone pointed out that there are not enough people in Monowi to play paper-rock-scissors. Now THAT is small town y’all.

It’s so small that Elsie Eiler is the only resident. She has a tavern, and every year she puts up posters announcing it’s time to vote, and then she votes for herself as Mayor.

Yep, that's a small town.

FAKE HEADLINE…BUT FUNNY

From the Babylon Bee:

Losing football team excitedly introduces new coach just fired from another losing football team.

There is a lot of that going on right now.

VALENTINE

Valentine’s Day is just a month off, and already gift-giving ideas are popping up everywhere. That’s way too much pressure on us guys who never have any idea what to buy for the person we love. I never have a clue.

I might repeat what I gave her last year…a guitar. She doesn’t play, and didn’t like it, but I got a new guitar!

AMISH SINGERS
If you’ve not seen or heard these two, check out Ben and Rose, who are a country couple…and they are Amish.

You don’t normally put country singers and Amish in the same sentence, but we need to, as these two young folks are really great. Check out their singing on this old familiar gospel tune, "Angel Band".

I’m a fan.

TODAY’S QUOTE

From Vince Lombardi:

“The only place where success comes before hard work is in the dictionary.”

TODAY

I’m writing online this morning with my long-time talented friend Brady Seals. And we will be writing with a talented young Texas female artist named Payton Howie.

She’s a talented guitar player, from what I hear, so it should be a fun write today.

Have a great Wednesday!
