Wife Trial...Mail Call...Crock Pottie

BILL BLOG

Monday January 12, 2026

The Monday morning sun is getting ready to rise in Nashville. It was flat-out chilly in Nashville yesterday, and we’re on a temperature roller coaster here for the next few days.

Today’s high will be 48. Then tomorrow we jump to 63. And on Thursday the high will be just 31.

THE WEEKEND

I watched a lot of play-off football games over the weekend. Man, the Hoosiers look unbeatable right now after their lopsided game against Oregon Friday night. It will be interesting to see if Miami can stay with them in the national championship game from Miami coming up next Monday evening.

NEW SINGLE ON THE WAY

I found out over the weekend that Katrina Burgoyne is going to release the fun song “Wife Trial” that we wrote on March 13.

Katrina, who is from Australia, was hoping her American boyfriend would hurry up and propose! So we wrote that song about how his time was up, his “wife trial” was over. And guess what happened. A week later, Steve proposed to her. Now she and Steve have a little girl that the two of them are raising. I think I might need to take some of the credit for that! Check out the song at the link above.

SONG OF THE DAY

I’m going to make “Seagoing Marine” my “song of the day” again because the 103-year-old World War II Marine I wrote this song with, Bob Schultz is getting ready to board one of those great “Honor Flights” to Washington DC. His family reached out to me over the weekend, and asked if I would be one of those who shared their thoughts about Bob Schultz in a letter form that the veterans read during their airplane trip. They call it "mail call" onboard those flights full of veterans.

Well, it was an HONOR to write with Bob and get to know him. And this is another amazing honor. I’ve had the pleasure of writing a couple of these kinds of letters.  One for the late Paul Salois, who gave me my first radio job as a kid in Bowling Green, Missouri.

The other is my dear friend and part of my extended family, Dodge Raymer, back in Missouri.

Bob Schultz’s story is truly amazing as he fought off Kamikazes during that war and buried some buddies at sea. If you have not already seen this, watch this great VIDEO his family put together using the song we wrote, “Seagoing Marine”.

HEALTH NOTES

Researchers tracked 47 million nights of sleep and found that snoozing for seven hours a night and maintaining a consistent bedtime within a one-hour window can reduce the risk of early death by 24% and the odds of a hospital stay by up to 17%.

Scientists at MIT have developed a groundbreaking smart pill that can wirelessly report the moment it’s been swallowed, giving doctors a way to monitor whether patients are taking their prescriptions on schedule. So, if you don’t take your pills on time, your pills could “tattle” on you.

No sign of the flu letting up. The CDC reports that there are over 15 million cases of it right now.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

I’ll take the “Whole Life” insurance plan, please.

OFFICE FEELS LIKE HOME

Some companies are now having employees check their shoes at the office door, allowing them to work in their bare feet or socks. They want them to feel more like they’re working from home, as many companies post-COVID have demanded employees return to the office. And some companies have found that it may not work for them.

There’s a website, Noshoes. fun, that lists companies trying to do this.

For some to feel like they’re working from home, the company would have to allow its employees to work in their pajamas. Now THAT would be a really interesting workplace environment.

SLOW COOKING

I like slow-cooked food. We still use a crock pot quite a bit here at the Whyte House. But, I don’t think I want someone serving me at a restaurant that uses a “Crock Pottie”.

Two restaurants had these. One in Taiwan, the other in LA.  Both have closed. The headline about the closing in California actually read, “Magic Restroom Café Craps Out After 8 Months.”

Geez, I can’t imagine why.

YOUNG…LIKE OPRAH

Oprah Winfrey is 71 and is aging in reverse. So she says. And she credits that to a “lifting and tightening” hack, and this hand cream she’s been using seen for over a decade.

One of those tubes will run you about $80.

If that’s too much to spend, consider some of these other “hacks” suggested by others who reportedly have tried these.

Mouth taping. Taping your mouth shut at night to help prevent wrinkles and snoring. (Pretty good weight loss plan as well!)

Hanging your head off the bed while massaging your face or doing facial exercises.

Forest bathing and temperature shocks for vitality. (Pretty sure the squirrels don’t want to see me bathing)

RETIRE CHEAP

Realtor.com listed the cheapest countries for retirement. Factoring in the cost of housing, medical care, and other costs, these countries can cost less than 34-71% less than what it costs in the US.

The cheapest is Crete, Greece, where one can get by on just $1,830 per month. And the place looks like this.

Here’s a look at the rest of their cheap LIST.

DRONING ON

Walmart just added 150 more cities where you can get a drone to deliver what you need to your front door.

It’s duck hunting season in some places right now. Like where I live. They’re shooting ducks until the end of the month. I think I’d avoid flying over the duck blinds until duck season is over.

AI FIRINGS

Adapt or lose your job must be the motto of CEO Eric Vaughn, who runs a software-based company named Ignite Tech. A few years ago, he could see that many of his employees were not adapting well to AI technology. So, he fired 80% of his workforce and started over. And he says he would do it again.

Heck, I have trouble just spelling AI.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From NY Post columnist Cindy Adams:

With the way schools are going, I’ve learned that students are in favor of discipline in class. They’re now demanding that teachers do exactly what they tell them.

TODAY

I’m writing with Stuie French of “The French Family Band” this morning, and that’s always a fun write. He and his family just got back from a long tour of Australia, where the family is from, so I’m expecting to hear some interesting stories about that today.

And I’ll try to find out what the release date will be on their new recording project, which will feature three songs I wrote with Stuie, two with him, and one with his talented guitar playing, son named Sonny. Can’t wait for that.

Have a great Monday!
