And a Merry Christmas to you all this Christmas Day! 71 degrees in Nashville this Christmas Day, and we will hit 74 degrees this Sunday.
YESTERDAY
The Whyte House looked, smelled, and felt like Christmas Eve had just passed. It felt like early summer looking at Old Hickory Lake.
But inside, it looked like Christmas for sure.
My wife made one of my favorites, gingerbread cookies, to accompany the turkey we had for dinner later.
But the highlight of the day was interacting with our daughter Heather and her husband, Casey, yesterday. It was Noon at our house…7 pm at their house in Germany. And that’s how we exchanged gifts, through the use of technology. We watched them unwrap what we sent overseas, and they watched the two of us unwrap what they sent from Germany.
My wife got a beautiful light sweater that our daughter sewed herself, a new talent she’s picked up over the last couple of years.
She’s been wearing this thing out making dresses, and you name it using this little pink machine.
And this is what I unwrapped.
A little something the kids picked up during a trip to Disneyland Paris a few months ago. Like them, I’m a “Mickey” fan, just as they are. Great choice. As soon as it cools back down in Tennessee, I’ll be sporting ole Mickey.
SPEAKING OF CHRISTMAS
I never saw the Norelco Christmas COMMERCIAL once this year, which doesn’t seem right. How can it really be Christmas if we never see Santa riding on his electric shaver?!
SONG OF THE DAY
I’m going to reshare this Christmas tune today, “Music City Mistletoe,” which is the theme song to the Christmas movie by the same name. I wrote this with the movie’s producer, Shantell Ogden, and my friend Victoria Venier.
A reminder, you can find this movie on Prime and Apple. You’ll hear this song at the beginning and the end of this movie.
HEALTH NOTES
Man, it sure sounds like we’re in for a severe flu season. Health experts are warning of a severe variant that’s making the rounds across the country.
A group of food experts listed the foods we should stop eating. They are:
Sugary drinks, transfats, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, high-mercury fish, hydrogenated and highly processed fats, and French fries.
Experts say drinking cleaner water could cut your disease risk in half, according to a 20-year study.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Well, somebody had a little Christmas fun.
SAD NEWS
I was sorry to hear the news that Roger Sovine passed away. Roger was the head of BMI for several years in Nashville, one of the big organizations that collects money and looks out for songwriters. He was also a singer and songwriter. And his Father was the late Red Sovine, who recorded all those big hit truck driving songs like “Teddy Bear”, and “Phantom 309”.
Roger and his wife Shirley lived in Gulf Shores for a long while before moving back to Nashville, and they became great friends with my buddy Brent Burns. Roger, Brent, and I wrote a couple of songs together, including this fun song, “Cheap White Wine, Cheap White Women,” that Brent put on one of his albums.
RIP.
POWERBALL
Somebody in Arkansas won 1.82 billion dollars yesterday with their winning Powerball ticket. It’s the second-largest payout ever. Pretty sure whoever won will not be clocking in for work this Monday morning.
MR. AND MRS. CLAUS PULLED OVER
In Ohio, a cop pulled over a speeding car. When he shone his spotlight, he found the passengers were an older couple on their way to surprise their daughter at Christmas. The officer had a great sense of humor and referred to the driver as “Santa” the entire time. The driver confessed he had a concealed weapon in the car and joked that the North Pole was not as safe as it used to be.
The Deputy told him to slow down, but did not give Santa a ticket, and before Santa drove away, he got a picture with the Deputy who pulled him over. It really is the Christmas spirit taking over!
GOOD NEWS
The murder rate dropped 20% last year, perhaps the largest drop ever. Good to hear.
LATE CHRISTMAS GIFT
You can buy a 144-piece tool set on Amazon today for just $20! Since I don’t know how to use almost all of them, I’ll have to pass. And I know my wife would not appreciate me buying it for her for an after-Christmas present.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
From Johnny Carson:
“The worst gift is fruitcake. There is only one fruitcake in the entire world, and people keep sending it to each other.”
TODAY
We started a little tradition after our daughter and son-in-law moved to Germany over three years ago. Our daughter Heather will pick out a movie to watch. She’ll let us know which movie when she and her husband, Casey, call us today. Then the two of them, and my wife Kathy and I, will sit on our respective couches, hit “start” on the movie at the same time, and it’s almost like we’re together. You do get creative when family is separated by a lot of miles and an ocean or two.
And I’ll certainly take a moment to remember what the day is truly all about.
I hope you have a very blessed and Merry Christmas.
