Wednesday and Christmas Eve have arrived. “Twas the night before.”
We will have a warm Christmas Eve and Christmas here in Nashville, with temperatures above 70. Yesterday, folks here were back in their shorts and t-shirts. And I turned off the space heater last night, and turned the ceiling fans back on.
And that’s just fine with me. I can find a picture of snow on my computer if I need to see snow.
YESTERDAY
Tuesday was a day of running a few errands, and that was the highlight. Things are getting ready to go into “laid back” mode for the next couple of weeks during this holiday period. It’s all about Christmas and heading into a New Year right now.
My wife and my daughter Heather, and our son-in-law Casey, who are in Germany, have sent us a special Advent calendar every year while they been stationed over there with the Army. Kathy and I get to open something for 25 days during the Christmas season. Everything from German candy to German potholders, and then this one showed up on day 23 of our Advent Calendar.
Love that. And so far, no fruitcake has shown up.
KENNEDY CENTER
I did watch the Kennedy Center Honors show last night, where George Strait was honored alongside Sylvester Stallone, Gloria Gaynor, KISS, and Michael Crawford, the “Phantom of the Opera” guy.
Brooks and Dunn sang “Amarillo by Morning.”
Miranda Lambert did a great job with “Run.”
And Vince Gill slayed one of my favorite Strait songs, “Old Troubadour”.
Congrats to the King of Country, George Strait.
SONG OF THE DAY
Today, I’m choosing the song “How Lucky Am I”, recorded by Kristy Cox featuring Jimmy Fortune, and written with my friends Jimmy Fortune and Sydni Perry one day, a couple of years ago at Jimmy’s house. The idea taken from a Winnie the Pooh quote.
Though the song was written because I had just lost someone I always considered my second Mom, Dean Raymer, back in Missouri, the song seems appropriate for Christmas Eve. We’ve all lost loved ones. Many will have someone they love who will not be with us this season. And the song is a reminder to remember how lucky we are to have had those folks in our lives.
HEALTH NOTES
A new study concludes that the time of day patients receive cancer treatment could have an impact on the outcome. The American Cancer Society Journal reports that patients who receive standard immunochemotherapy for extensive-stage small cell lung cancer earlier in the day say “significantly greater benefit” compared to those who got the same treatment later in the afternoon.
As tetanus vaccination rates decline, doctors worry about the rising case numbers.
A new flu variant has hit Southern California that worries Doctors. It’s that time of year.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
I’ll second that.
GRANDE CLOSURE
Starbucks shut down 568 stores yesterday. That’s the largest closure in the company’s history. And at the same time, Pizza Hut announced it will close 68 of its stores. So it might be tough getting a cup of Grande with your pepperoni pizza in places today.
ON A BETTER NOTE
I found gas at $2.15 per gallon yesterday! And 9 states have gas prices now below $2 a gallon. That’s pretty great news, but it’s going to kill the popularity of the song I wrote and recorded, “The Dipstick Song.”
JOKE
A ham sandwich walks into a bar, and the bartender says, “Sorry, we don’t serve food in here”.
GUINNESS
In 2025, a couple of memorable Guinness World Records were broken.
The fastest 100-meter run over Lego bricks. (Ouch)
And the most matches held in a person’s nose. Uh huh. For the record, this guy held 98 in his nostrils.
Yep, me too. I would have been just fine not knowing that. I can imagine his wife asking, “Honey, do you know where the kitchen matches are?”
BOOKS ARE HOT AGAIN
Book stores are making a comeback. Over the past 5 years, the numbers have jumped more that 70%. I mentioned yesterday that Barnes and Noble opened 60 new stores.
Well, if you’re book shopping, please consider the book my wife Kathy wrote, “Subtle Frequency,” which is available by preorder right now everywhere, worldwide. Might make for a great last-second Christmas gift. Just saying.
And on February 3, you’ll be able to walk into most bookstores and buy a hard copy.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
From Jean Kerr:
“Some enterprising youth should go from door to door on Christmas morning peddling batteries”.
TODAY
A little college football today, then this evening we will “FaceTime” with our daughter and son-in-law over in Germany and watch them open gifts we sent and vice-versa. With them moving back stateside next year, we are very much looking forward to decorating a cactus with them in Arizona and having the family back together in person for Christmas for the first time in a long time.
So Merry Christmas Eve to you and to yours as well.
Have a great Wednesday!
