A Hall of Famer...Riders In The Sky...Anne Murray

BILL BLOG

Wednesday December 18, 2025

Hump Day Wednesday has arrived. Warmer today in Nashville. A high of 57 is on the way.

YESTERDAY

I had fun writing a new song with hit writer Byron Hill and bluegrass artist Caroline Owens at my publishing company. Byron’s string of hits through the years included the great George Strait hit “Fool Hearted Memory”. And he’s a member of the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame.

And Caroline is a young bluegrass star who is making a lot of noise in the bluegrass world. Right now, she’s making that noise with the song I wrote with Andrea Pearson, “Telluride”.

Another one of those days that I quietly thought, “How did they let me in the room?”! Byron was playing a great lick on his guitar that we turned into our song yesterday. Nobody really had an idea, but that guitar lick brought an idea to life, and another song was born. Fun morning.

THE COWBOY WAY

I got to say high to the Riders In The Sky yesterday, as they were in our building to record a song that my friend Jerry Salley is producing. Love those guys.

When I was on the radio in Cincinnati, the Riders had a “radio” show they produced at the old Emory Theater there.

It was like one of those old radio shows that folks used to listen to on their Philco radios at home. Complete with “live” sound effects and great special guests like Ricky Skaggs, Suzy Bogguss, and others. It was a treat to watch that kind of nostalgia unfold. The Riders came by and guested on my morning show a couple of times while they were doing that.

Then years later, when they played the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee, when I was doing the morning show on WMIL radio, they invited me to sing “Cool Water” with them on stage. Quite the moment for a guy who loves cowboy music and cowboy harmony. Great seeing them again yesterday.

SUBTLE FREQUENCY

My wife Kathy’s book is up for pre-sale right now. It might make a great Christmas gift for the reader in your family. Just saying.

You can preorder it on several sites. If you choose Amazon, you may have to type in this ISBN# 9781964686738. But it is available there as well as at Books A Million, Barnes and Noble, and most places you would search for books.

And if you feel like it, share the news about her book on your socials, or share what Kathy is posting on her socials. Thank you!

SONG OF THE DAY

Here’s a song I wrote with Paul Bogart titled “Grow,” which is all about how things just grow up so fast, including our kids. It was the first song of mine that Paul Bogart recorded, and that was followed by 4 or 5 others. Paul is a real deal cowboy. In fact, he got a scholarship for rodeo out in Oklahoma. True.

He and his Father team rope and have won many buckles together at different rodeos. I learned a lot of cowboy stuff hanging around Paul through the years.

Click the link above to hear the song, and watch the great video Paul produced for our song.

 HEALTH NOTES

Researchers in the UK may have discovered a treatment for symptoms of tinnitus, with a new form of sound therapy. It could help those who suffer from loud and painful ringing and buzzing in their ears.

A new study reveals that people with higher omega-3 levels were less likely to have depression or anxiety.

Holiday heart attacks rise, and doctors say that binge drinking, overeating, and skipping exercise can trigger “holiday heart syndrome”.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Nobody wants to crash land on a broom.

SNOWBIRD

I found an online musical documentary about the career of Canadian superstar Anne Murray at this LINK. The document is titled “Full Circle”. If you’re a fan of hers, you’ll love the documentary that lays bare the challenges she faced in her career before retiring. I watched it on my computer last night and was reminded what a great voice she had.

Then this morning, I was trying to absorb the tragic news in Australia, at Brown University, and the killing of Rob Reiner and his wife. And it struck me (and they mention this in the documentary) how her song “A Little Good News” is still as relevant today as it was in 1983 when Anne released this song, “I sure could use a little good news today”.

Here 7th number one song was written by Tommy Rocco, Rory Bourke, and the late Charlie Black. A couple of years ago, at a songwriters’ festival in Port St. Joe, Florida, I got to watch Charlie tell the story about that song, and then sing it. This is a wonderful INTERVIEW with Charlie talking about the creation of that great song.

CLEAR THE SNOW

How about a little help clearing that snow?

This self-driving robot from Yarbo can clear snow up to 5 inches high on its own. It will cost you $5,000 to own one. The good news is it will never have a heart attack while clearing the snow. And neither will you.

After living through six winters in Wisconsin, one of the happiest days in my life was giving away my snowblower when we moved south.

EXPENSIVE PENNIES

The last set of US-minted pennies sold for $ 16.7 million at auction yesterday.

I think I’ll hang onto mine…just in case.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From W.C. Fields:

I like to cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to my food.”

TODAY

My co-writer had to cancel our appointment this morning for a sad reason, so my best thoughts go out to him. So I have an open today to catch up on stuff. Is it too early to shop for Christmas?

Have a great Wednesday!
