Hello Tuesday morning. A 74-degree high today in Nashville…and some rain.
YESTERDAY
I had the pleasure of writing once again with Lauren Mascitti, who’s just too talented for the room. She’s another one of those that I’m glad to be in a writing room just to hear her sing. And we certainly have some songs together that I’m proud of. I love this one in particular that we wrote, “Look Who’s Crying Now,” as it really shows off her voice.
We ended up writing a “waltz” yesterday, so it’s safe to say we had fun in ¾ time.
LAST NIGHT
Hall of Fame Songwriter Jerry Foster is celebrating his 90th birthday. Last night, my friend Ginny Foley organized a songwriter night to honor my fellow Missourian.
And Ginny laid out quite the spread of food for all of us. This is me unashamedly chowing down next to Linda Davis.
Each songwriter sang a Jerry Foster hit or two. I sang two, this Johnny Paycheck smash, “My Part of Forever,” in front of the honoree. Watch the video...and you'll see that I have quite the page turner.
And this is Linda singing the big hit Jerry wrote for Mickey Gilley, "Here Comes The Hurt Again". Linda slayed this last night.
The writing team of Foster and Rice (Bill Rice) wrote so many hits in the 60’s and ’70s. The number is staggering. At one point, the writing team had TEN songs on the Billboard Chart, a feat that’s not likely to ever happen again. And the incredible stories Jerry told about each song after we performed those hits were just an entertainment bonus.
Thank you for inviting me to be part of such a special evening, Ginny. This is my friend Linda Davis, absorbed in conversation with the Birthday Boy last night.
TELLURIDE
My friend Caroline Owens just posted another fun “tease” of our bluegrass hit “Telluride”, a song she recorded for Billy Blue Records that I co-wrote with Andrea Pearson. I guess she’s “raking” in a hit if you look at the video. Thank you, Caroline!
BRAGGING ON MY DAUGHTER
Heather is designing and sewing a lot these days in Germany, and she’s teaching classes that have gained a lot of popularity over there. Yesterday, she shared a picture of a purse she made inspired by the movie “Wicked”, with part 2 coming out in theaters this weekend. She and her husband, Casey, are going to see it, and she’ll be carrying this creation she made.
If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll get how creative this is. Me? The closest I get to being a sewer is the fact that I’m a SINGER.
SONG OF THE DAY
Check out this VIDEO that was filmed at Billy Blue Studios not too long ago. I had not seen this until just yesterday. Jerry Salley and Rick Lang are discussing the song “Blue Collar Gospel,” which the three of us wrote and was nominated for Bluegrass Gospel Song of the Year this past year. It features Jerry singing the lead vocal, along with the Oak Ridge Boys. Every song on this great album was written, or co-written by Rick, and Jerry produced the project.
With all that, “Blue Collar Gospel” is my pick for “Song of the Day”.
HEALTH NOTES
Scientists studying an existing blood pressure drug called hydralazine accidentally discovered that it could potentially fight cancer.
Interesting. New research from Harvard has found a link between evening light exposure and an increased risk of heart disease.
The price for the popular weight loss drug Wegovy just dropped 30%.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Good to know.
SAY WHAT?
Early childhood development researchers in Australia say that parents should ask babies for “consent” before changing their diapers. Right. And what happens if you ask and the baby says “no”? Proof that some researchers have way too much time on their hands.
GREAT LINE
This one from longtime New York Post columnist Cindy Adams, who was at a big Trump party at Mar-a-Lago recently. She had had a long day and was falling asleep at the party. She said, “My lids were shutting tighter than a redone Hollywood facelift”.
BEST FAST FOOD
I skimmed through every state I’ve lived in, six in all, looking at the choices for “Best Fast Food” places in each state as listed by a Travel Magazine. Five of the six? I’d never been too.
But the one I have been to that they listed is SO good. That would be Kopp’s in Milwaukee.
Great burger…and the custard is world-famous good. And it comes out of a machine in a ribbon.
When I got the city tour of Milwaukee from the radio station there that wanted to hire me, one of the places they took me to was Kopp’s. I’m not saying that’s what sealed the deal…but it sure didn’t hurt.
ANOTHER WEIRD RECORD
David Rush is into collecting Guinness World Records. He holds 300 of them. His latest? Riding a unicycle with 7 bowling balls. Uh huh.
I have no idea what makes a person wake up one day and think, “You know what would be a really cool idea”?
QUOTE
From Jerry Seinfeld:
“If a book about failures doesn’t sell, is it a success?”
I’m going to be up all night pondering that.
TODAY
I’ve got a wide-open Tuesday in front of me. Think I’ll practice trying to be lazy.
Have a great Tuesday!
