A Showcase in Carolina...A #1 Song!...Black Friday Already

BILL BLOG

Tuesday November 4, 2025

And a good Tuesday morning from Durham, North Carolina.

YESTERDAY

Linda Davis, Lang Scott, and I made an 8-hour drive from Nashville, here, to Durham, North Carolina. We’re playing a 15-minute showcase this evening for a bunch of theater buyers from the southeast.

Over the next couple of days, buyers will listen to acts of all kinds and decide who they want to book shows with for next season. We’re hoping a bunch of them love our “Evening in the Round” show and will bring us to their hometowns.

We feel fortunate to be here because this particular showcase is very hard to get into and is one of the most prestigious of its kind. We’ll play in the beautiful Carolina Theatre this evening for those buyers…so wish us good luck.

THE DRIVE OVER

It was SCENIC for sure traveling through Tennessee, Virginia, the Carolinas, and through the Blueridge Mountains as the leaves have turned.

The conversation during the trip always helps the miles disappear pretty fast. And then THIS happened.

Young bluegrass artist Caroline Owens texted my co-writer Andrea Pearson texted me that her song, “Telluride,” that I co-wrote with Andrea Pearson just went #1 on the Banjo Radio Chart!  Numero Uno! So that REALLY made the rest of the trip fly by for sure. Congrats to Caroline, Andrea, Billy Blue Records, and producers Jerry Salley & Darin Aldridge!

CAROLINA

We got settled into our room and then went to a great local restaurant called “It’s A Southern Thing”. And you know it’s southern when they pour your drink into a Ball Jar, and they have catfish over red beans and rice.

After we finished our “southern meal,”…we headed over to the beautiful Carolina Theatre, where all the showcases are being held.

SPEAKING OF DARIN ALDRIDGE

Darin and Brooke Aldridge, who have recorded many songs that I’ve helped write, are also here playing this showcase. They had a MUCH shorter drive as they live not far from Durham. So, we had a chance to hear them play their showcase last night before we went to bed. They followed a magician who was on America’s Got Talent, and a Chinese-Jazz-Infusion group. And that shows you that they have ALL kinds of different acts at this showcase.

We rooted and cheered them on, and they did great. And they opened their showcase with a song the three of us wrote, “The Grand Ole Circle”, so that was kind of a special moment.

And this evening at our showcase, Brooke Aldridge, a four-time Bluegrass Female Vocalist of the Year, is going to get up during our set to help Linda sing a bit of her huge duo hit with Reba, “Does He Love You”. That should be special!

SONG OF THE DAY

Well, since Telluride went #1, I think it’s only right to make that song the “Song of the Day”. Even though it’s been in this slot before, it’s certainly appropriate as it sits at the top of the chart. Here’s our song, “Telluride”.

HEALTH NOTES

A cure for baldness may be on the way. Researchers from a university in Taiwan say they have discovered a serum that could potentially regrow hair in just 20 days. Where do I sign up? (If this is really true, it’s going to ruin my plan to sell ads for space on my head)

According to a new study published in the journal Science Advances this month, sighing provides instant relief, helps keep lungs healthy, and can even improve mood. (So take a deep breath…and sigh)

Scientists discovered a 39% reduction in dementia risk in individuals who reported they “always” listened to music as opposed to “never”, “rarely”, or “sometimes”.

BLACK FRIDAY

Already?  Getting close. Hard to miss the ads promoting EARLY Black Friday deals. And that reminds me of a song idea a friend sent me years ago, suggesting that I write a song titled, “Black Fridays Matter.” Still haven’t gotten around to that.

CHANGE OF ORANGE SHORTS

Neil Kiefer, 73, is the new CEO of Hooters. Will there be changes? Well, he said this. “I don’t think you’re going to see a bunch of butt cheeks hanging out.”

Wonder if they’ll get anywhere near the kickback that Cracker Barrel got when they tried to get rid of “Uncle Herschel?” I’m thinking not.

 SIX FLAGS

Hard to believe they are shutting their theme parks down. Gone. Six Flags in St. Louis was the first REAL theme park I ever went to. Until then, it was pretty much the Ferris Wheel and the Scrambler at the Montgomery City Fair in Missouri, where I grew up. Makes me feel just a tad sad that they’re gone.

FUNNY CARTOON

Well, it made me laugh.

TODAY’S QUOTE

From Sir Norman Wisdom:

As you get older, three things happen. The first is your memory goes, and I can’t remember the other two”.

TODAY

This morning, our trio will rehearse our showcase set for tonight. That will happen just a little before 8 pm. And then Linda Davis, Lang Scott, and I will hang around long enough to watch our friend Jenny Tolman, who is also here in Durham, perform her showcase. Jenny is on “The Road” show right now on CBS. We’ll be rooting her on!

Have a great Tuesday!
