Telluride On The Charts...Crickets...Vending Machines

BILL BLOG

Thursday October 9, 2025

And now it’s Thursday—Cooler in Nashville, with a high of just 72 today.

YESTERDAY

I had a writing appointment yesterday with a couple of my favorite co-writers, but my back decided it needed to get a shot at the time of the appointment. All in all, I would have rather been writing, but my back would not take no for an answer yesterday.  It happens. It was a good time to have 4 Major League Baseball games on TV to watch for sure.

TELLURIDE

It’s nice to see the Caroline Owens song “Telluride” that I wrote with Andrea Pearson going up the Banjo Radio Chart.

Currently sitting at #6. Thank you to Program Director Kyle Cantrell for loving our Colorado song.

FUN VIDEO

Check out my Aussie friend Katrina Burgoyne in this VIDEO having fun, while promoting her new single that we wrote, “Stones”. If you like Australian accents, you’ll love this.

SONG OF THE DAY

This is the Joe Nichols song I’m part of, “Crickets,” written with Lisa Shaffer and Brent Baxter. There’s a pretty good story about how this song was recorded. I always tell part of that story before I perform it in my shows. But here’s the STORY BEHIND THAT SONG from Brent Baxter that’s really interesting. It’s a story about why it’s a good idea not to give up on a song you really believe in.

The song turned into a title track for Joe, which was a nice bonus. Thank you Lisa Shaffer such a great idea for a country song.

HEALTH NOTES

Dolly Parton went out of her way yesterday to say that she’s doing fine, and “I’m not ready to die yet”. She canceled a residency in Vegas, which alarmed a lot of her fans, and then her sister, Freida, posted that she’d been praying hard for her sister, which alarmed even more Dolly fans. She’s being treated for some health issues, but offered that she’s going to be fine. Good to hear.

UC Santa Barbara has developed a new soft robotic system for emergency intubation procedures. The new device will help first responders insert breathing tubes faster and safer than traditional methods.

New research out of Israel suggests that patients using the popular drug Propecia for male pattern baldness face a significantly higher risk of mood disorders and suicidal thoughts compared to those who don’t.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Some genius, save money kind of thinking went into that sign.

PULL YOURSELF UP

An Australian bodybuilder, Jade Henderson, just broke a world record for pull-ups. She did 773 of those bad boys at the age of 32 in just one hour. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t do one in an hour, even if I had help from someone pushing me up to the bar.

I remember they tried to get us to do pull-ups when I attended Elsberry High in Missouri. PE Class. Nope. Could hardly do one even back then. But I did excel at recess…so I had that going for me.

OCEANS 14

Yes, there is going to be a new Oceans movie from George Clooney and the gang. I’m a fan. And the good news is, most of the big stars from Ocean 11 will be back in this new one, including Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and Don Cheadle. The Ocean movies have taken in over 451 million bucks at the box office through the years. Bring it on.

VENDING MACHINES

Amazon will be putting out vending machines soon that dispense prescription drugs. True. Got me to thinking about what other kinds of vending machines are out there.

How about this mashed potato vending machine?

Or this lobster vending machine you can find in Vegas?

And...who doesn't want to pull the handle on a vending machine and have a "thong" drop into the basket?

ALAN JACKSON

The final concert for Alan Jackson will be on June 27 of next year here in Nashville. He’s dealing with Charcot-Marie-Tooth, which is forcing him to retire, which is unfortunate for all who love Alan. He will have a lot of friends joining him. Luke Combs, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, Eric Church, Keith Urban, Lee Ann Womack, and others. The concert will be held at Nissan Stadium, where the Tennessee Titans play football.

TODAY’S QUOTE

Brooke Shields…actually said this:

Smoking kills. If you’re killed, you’ve lost a very important part of your life.

Uh huh.

TODAY

Tonight I’ll be a guest on the Front Porch Jammin’ Show hosted by my friend Joe Rucker on WLIJ Radio. I’ll be on at 5 pm this evening, and you can listen if you’d like HERE.  I’ll be playing some songs and talking about radio, songwriting, performing, and whatever else Joe wants to get into. Looking forward to it.

Have a great Thursday!

Two Nominations...New Show...Back Home This Weekend

BILL BLOG Monday June 30, 2025   Monday morning, the last day of June already, and we’re rolling towards the 4 th of July. And it’s likely to be hot.   With that in mind, did you hear that the inventor of the heat index died?   He was 88 but felt like 107.   Some light rain with a high of 88 is predicted for Nashville today.   THE WEEKEND Over the weekend, I found out that two songs I helped write are up for consideration for the Dove Awards this year. “ Blue Collar Gospel ” was recorded by Jerry Salley and the Oak Ridge Boys, written with Jerry Salley and Rick Lang .   And “ Country Faith ” was recorded by Kristen Leigh Bearfield with gospel great Karen Peck singing harmony, written with Kristen Bearfield and Bob Minner .   “For consideration” means it’s in the early stages of the voting, and we’ll have to wait and see if either song makes it to the final ballot. Either way, it’s pretty cool to have the...

Dove Award Nomination...The American Dream...Baseball Bobbleheads

BILL BLOG Friday June 27, 2025   It’s Friday morning. Are you ready for the weekend?   It will hit 91 for a high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY I had an open day pop-up after my writing session was cancelled at the last second. So I spent some time at my publishing company talking about songs that are being pitched of mine right now with my publisher. And we talked about a new song that I helped write that my publisher likes a lot, but thinks there are parts of it that could be stronger. And he was right.   Songwriting is a competitive business, and getting artists to record your songs is always a challenge. Changing a lyric and making it stronger increases the odds a little that a song may find a home. I’m all about trying to make something good…better.   Further down in this Blog today, you’ll read about a lyric change that led to a smash hit because the writers were willing to make a change.   MORE BLUEBIRD I’m...
