Hello Thursday.
YESTERDAY
I did some rhyming with both Jerry Salley and Alex Miller. On top of his own songwriting and singing talents, Jerry Salley also produces Alex Miller.
Alex is always working on his next projects, and usually, when I write with him, we write songs that might work for him. But yesterday, Jerry had an idea that we all thought would fit a major bluegrass star that we all love. We worked hard on targeting this song to sound like something that the artist may like. There’s still some work left to do on this one, so we’ll get back together soon to try and finish what we started yesterday.
NEXT YEAR
My Reds got swept by the Dodgers last night out in LA. Hard to watch. But they had a remarkable year with a roster full of “no names” for the most part. So the question is, how many days til Spring Training camps open?
CMA VOTING
I cast my votes yesterday for this year’s CMA Awards. The award show this year will be hosted by Lainey Wilson on ABC. The awards show will air November 19 from here in Nashville. It will be aired on ABC, and you can stream it the next day on Hulu. There were some tough choices this year.
The nominees for “Entertainer of the Year” are.
Your host…Lainey Wilson, Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, Chris Stapleton, and Cody Johnson.
Good luck to all.
SONG OF THE DAY
Today’s song is a funny selection. “My Wife’s Gonna Leave You”. I wrote that one with the great Wood Newton, who has written a lot of big hits in his career, including the likes of “Bobby Sue” by the Oak Ridge Boys, “Private Malone” for David Ball, and “Twenty Years Ago” for Kenny Rogers, just to name a few.
Wood and I wrote one afternoon years ago at his office, which is located in the old RCA building on Music Row. We took a break and went to lunch. And during lunch, I shared that idea with Wood. He quickly wrote the title on a napkin and asked me not to share that with ANYONE, as he wanted to be the co-writer. And a few days later, we did that, and laughed quite a bit while we were bringing the idea to life. 86 degree high today in Music City. And it looks like we’ll be in the mid-80s for at least the next week or so.
Wood sings it at many of his songwriter shows, as do I. I recorded the song, and so did Wood. And it’s Wood’s version that you can hear by clicking the link above.
HEALTH NOTES
A highly transmissible COVID-19 strain is fueling a wave of infections across the US. It’s the XFG variant, known as “Stratus”. That, on top of the flu, has a lot of folks sick right now.
Minnesota now has 18 cases of measles. The total number of cases in the US now stands at 1,544.
A new study suggests that apple cider vinegar might support liver health.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Appropriate today, considering the government shutdown.
OH DEER
We have deer in Tennessee. LOTS of deer. Our backyard is constantly filled with as many as a dozen of them. In Hendersonville, about 20 minutes away, the deer population is so big that the Wildlife folks are going to open up “backyard” deer season, where property owners will be allowed to shoot deer in their backyards in an effort to cull the deer population. So an owner can put a deer stand up just off their deck if they want to.
JOKE
Husband: I want you to have this bracelet. It belonged to my Grandmother.
Wife: Why does it say “Do not resuscitate?”
MAXWELL HOUSE
How about this temporary rebranding for a familiar brand of coffee?
Nearly 1/3rd of Americans are renting smaller places these days, so the folks at Maxwell House are going to offer up a rebrand to drink if you’d like. Wonder if Folgers will counter with Folger’s Tiny House Coffee? Or maybe, Hills Brothers Single Wide Coffee?
TODAY’S QUOTE
From the late comedian Bob Hope:
“You know you’re getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.”
TODAY
I’m writing with Jenny Tolman and her husband Dave Brainard, and of course their little boy “Bear”. He might be playing drums or pots and pans today.
Jenny will be one of the contestants on the CBS show “The Road” that starts in just a few weeks. I’m going to be rooting hard for her.
Have a great Thursday!
