Lulu's Last Night...Parrot Heads Everywhere...Tortilla Ban

BILL BLOG

Tuesday October 21, 2025

And a good Tuesday morning to you from Gulf Shores, Alabama, known to some as LA, “Lower Alabama”. 81 and sunny down here on the coast today.

YESTERDAY

I had a little 4-hour trip over to Gulf Shores on a sunny day. I’m now hanging with my longtime beach buddy Brent Burns at his house, as all this week the Parrot Heads are in town for their big festival and awards show.

Last night I sat in with Brent at Lulu’s. Brent will be playing there every Monday now through the all of the winter as he always does when the Snowbirds arrive. And he always sings “If It’s Snowbird Season, Why Can’t We Shoot Em’” to all the snowbirds coming south to get out of the cold. And he did it last night as well. It was Brent’s first time back at Lulu’s after recovering from back surgery (and he’s still recovering). But he did so well, and of course, the crowd loved him. It was great seeing him do his thing that he’s done for years at Lulu’s…20 years and counting

And the two of us had great fun doing a set together on stage.

Brent and I have a couple of shows together this year for the festival, including this one.

And Wednesday night, I’ll sing on the Big Stage at the Hangout to sing a song Brent and I wrote to honor Brent. They are celebrating the legends of Trop Rock Music, and Brent is certainly one of those. He’s had back surgery and is still recovering, so he has had to cancel a couple of appearances because of that. So, I’ll be honoring him Wednesday night with one of our songs. And I’m honored they asked me to do that.

WORLD SERIES

I got back to Brent’s house in time to watch the comeback from the Toronto Blue Jays as they beat the Seattle Mariners in a game 7 winner-take-all all championship. Great game to watch. I was kind of rooting for Seattle as they’ve never been to the World Series before.

Now it’s the Jays vs the Dodgers and their 400 million dollar payroll lineup. Hard to bet against the Dodgers right now.

SONG OF THE DAY

Let’s make it a Brent Burns classic that I helped him write, “Don’t Come Knockin’ If The Tiki Hut’s Rockin’, that was the Trop Rock Song of the Year a few years ago. That’s the song I’ll be singing this Wednesday night to honor him.

HEALTH NOTES

The Google building in New York is “searching” for bed bugs as an outbreak has hit their building.

Some health experts say you should eat a balanced meal, focusing on anti-inflammatory foods before getting a COVID shot, and then say hydrated after to lessen any side effects from the shot.

Two new studies agree that Cannabis relieves back pain.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Uh…once again…spell check is such a good idea.

BILL AND STEVE MISTLETOE

This is me and my buddy Steve Dean.

They put us under the danged mistletoe. That was to help promote the movie “Music City Mistletoe”. Each of us has a Christmas song in this movie. Mine is the title track that I wrote with the movie producer Shantell Ogden and my friend Victoria Venier.  If you’re curious, you can hear it HERE.

PANCAKE ART

Yep, it’s a thing.

They have contests, some pay up to $10,000 for the winning pancake.

Who knew?

TEXAS TECH

They have banned the Texas Tech tradition of throwing tortillas at football games. It’s a thing there. The problem is, the students threw them on the field, penalizing their team a couple of times. So I guess some security guy will be scanning for tortilla shells at the front gate from now on.

SPEAKING OF TORTILLAS

You can buy one of these on Amazon.

It’s a throw pillow, believe it or not. And if you don’t like that item…maybe this one?

And just in time for Thanksgiving.

Amazing what can be delivered to your front door from Amazon.

TODAY’S QUOTE

From Reba McEntire:

To succeed in life, you need three things. A wishbone, a backbone, and a funny bone.”

TODAY

It’s the calm before the storm this week of shows and emcee duties. Today I have a planning meeting with my co-emcee and one of the festival coordinators at Lulu's to assign the stage times for each of us this week, emceeing shows taking place on 2 separate stages. It's going to be a very busy, and fun week.

Have a great Tuesday!

Two Nominations...New Show...Back Home This Weekend

BILL BLOG Monday June 30, 2025   Monday morning, the last day of June already, and we’re rolling towards the 4 th of July. And it’s likely to be hot.   With that in mind, did you hear that the inventor of the heat index died?   He was 88 but felt like 107.   Some light rain with a high of 88 is predicted for Nashville today.   THE WEEKEND Over the weekend, I found out that two songs I helped write are up for consideration for the Dove Awards this year. “ Blue Collar Gospel ” was recorded by Jerry Salley and the Oak Ridge Boys, written with Jerry Salley and Rick Lang .   And “ Country Faith ” was recorded by Kristen Leigh Bearfield with gospel great Karen Peck singing harmony, written with Kristen Bearfield and Bob Minner .   “For consideration” means it’s in the early stages of the voting, and we’ll have to wait and see if either song makes it to the final ballot. Either way, it’s pretty cool to have the...

Dove Award Nomination...The American Dream...Baseball Bobbleheads

BILL BLOG Friday June 27, 2025   It’s Friday morning. Are you ready for the weekend?   It will hit 91 for a high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY I had an open day pop-up after my writing session was cancelled at the last second. So I spent some time at my publishing company talking about songs that are being pitched of mine right now with my publisher. And we talked about a new song that I helped write that my publisher likes a lot, but thinks there are parts of it that could be stronger. And he was right.   Songwriting is a competitive business, and getting artists to record your songs is always a challenge. Changing a lyric and making it stronger increases the odds a little that a song may find a home. I’m all about trying to make something good…better.   Further down in this Blog today, you’ll read about a lyric change that led to a smash hit because the writers were willing to make a change.   MORE BLUEBIRD I’m...

Magical Bluebird Cafe Show..."The Road"...Waffle House

BILL BLOG Thursday June 26, 2025    Thursday morning arises after a busy Wednesday. It’s ONLY going to be 95 in Nashville today with some possible rain. And that’s good news after the weather folks predicted that it would be over 100 degrees yesterday. Plenty HOT.     How hot is it?   Hot enough that asphalt melted in NYC yesterday and almost swallowed this bus.  YESTERDAY My friend Troy Engle drove down from Pennsylvania with his family to visit a couple of colleges for his daughter. And he found time to write a wonderful idea he brought with him from Amish country, with me, and I’m surely glad about that.   Troy lived in Nashville for years, and he wrote songs and played with the late Tom T. Hall …and then Eric Church , and then Patty Loveless , and on and on. Big acts hired him a lot because he’s a multi-instrumentalist and can play banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, steel guitar…you name it.   If his two...
