Solo Write...Great Bluegrass Show...Upcoming Show

BILL BLOG

Friday July 25, 2025

Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday! 92 for a high in Nashville today, but the weather folks are telling us the heat index could hit 109! I’m going to need both Right and Left Guard today.

YESTERDAY

I had a scheduling conflict yesterday as my co-writer and I weren’t together on the calendar. It happens. So, with time on my hands, I took advantage of the room my publishing company had held open for me and wrote the idea I had brought with me solo. So yes, I co-wrote with myself. That’s not a bad thing in the songwriting world, because if you happen to write something solo that gets recorded, it’s more profitable, of course, for the writer and the publishing company. So, it turned out to be a positive thing.

And I’m going to make a solo write the “Song of the Day” here coming up just below.

LAST NIGHT

I got out and heard my friends Darin and Brooke Aldridge at the Station Inn here in Nashville. They were great as always. And they carry a very talented bluegrass band with them.

They talked about being on the Grand Ole Opry again. That will happen this Sunday night. By now, they’ve been on the Opry something like 60 or more times, which is really something. And they played “The Grand Ole Circle,” which the three of us wrote about that iconic 6-foot piece of wood that the entertainers stand on when they perform at the Opry. And yes, it’s always a treat to hear entertainers as good as they are, singing one of your songs “live”.

LOST SHAKER OF SALT

I finally got a group shot of the “finale” song performed this past Tuesday night at my friend Lauren Mascitti’s EP release party that took place at 3rd and Lindsley here in Nashville. Lauren’s six-song “beach song” EP is just so good, and she performed every song with the great band you see here on stage. She invited several of her songwriting friends, like me, who you see here on stage with the band, closing out the night with “Margaritaville”. So much fun.

Get yourself a copy of Lauren’s brand new “Out of the Blue” project that includes songs like “Give It Time”. It will make you want to call your travel agent to book a trip to the beach.

FUN VIDEO

Another artist co-writer of mine, Katrina Burgoyne, is having fun doing some video teasers of songs we’ve written together that she’s recorded. This VIDEO tease is for the song “Stones”. Check it out.

UPCOMING SHOW

A week from Tuesday night, I’ll be playing a songwriting round with this group at the Listening Room in Nashville.

Ben Klick, a Canadian artist, is hosting this musical round. I’ve not met Kenny Foster, but I certainly know Lauren Mascitti, whom I just talked about. I was glad to see that she will be joining us for this show.

SONG OF THE DAY

As promised, here’s a song I wrote by myself that my friend Kristy Cox loved, and then recorded, titled “Blue Ain’t Just A Color Anymore”. Not only did she and producer Jerry Salley record the heck out of this for Billy Blue Records, but it’s also become a song that is regularly in Kristy’s shows wherever she goes. Up-tempo and fun.

HEALTH NOTES

The CDC says that COVID cases are rising across the U.S. once again. Particularly across the Southeast, South, and West Coast.

Experts say that food, not lack of exercise, is the cause of obesity. One of those experts pointed out, “You can’t outrun a bad diet.”

Another health expert tells us that just 20 minutes of being outside can transform mental health. (Again, the heat index today will be 109. I don’t think I’ll be trying to improve my mental health today.)

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Might be some truth in that huh?

LIVING AIN’T CHEAP

The price of houses just keeps going up. The cost has increased by another 2% compared to last year, with the median price of a home being $435,300. And because of that price, realtors say there have been fewer than 4 million sales since 1995, and the country is on pace for the slowest sales in 30 years.

Tiny house anyone?

AND…

Grocery prices reached an all-time high yesterday. As if we didn’t know…right?

MIRACLE

A year ago, a baby was born prematurely. The mother gave birth after just 21 weeks, meaning the baby arrived 133 days early. That broke a Guinness World Record. The baby was born on July 5, coming into the world at just 100 ounces. And one year later, the baby sure looks as healthy as can be. That kind of stuff convinces me that miracles do happen.

NOT SOMETHING YOU SEE EVERY DAY

Yep, that’s old Chuck E. Cheese being handcuffed. He was busted for credit card theft. (I told you he was a rat)

FLY AWAY

For just $880,000, you can pre-order one of these Star Wars-like flying speeder bikes.

You can fly at 124 mph if you want to. Instructors teach each buyer how to fly one of these bad boys. Wow. My first thought was that I would NEVER hop on board one of these, and then I remembered that I did fly one of these a bunch of years ago.

So, maybe?

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Model Traveled To The Caribbean To Get Butt Implants And They Fell Out. (Yep…no if’s ands, or butts about it)

TODAY

I’m writing with my Italian friend Bill DiLuigi today. Bill is a workhorse of a songwriter, and he’s been doing it for a long while. He’s also one of the songwriters who is part of our Freedom Sings USA group that writes with our veterans. Next weekend, Bill, Steve Dean, Bobby Tomberlin, and I will all be riding up to Shiloh, Illinois, for a songwriters’ retreat there.

Have a great weekend!

Pensacola...Writing With A Friend....Happy Memorial Day

BILL BLOG Monday May 26, 2025  And a good Memorial Day Monday morning to you from Pensacola, Florida.   THE WEEKEND Mine started Saturday morning by jumping the car with Steve Dean and making the trip from Nashville down here to beautiful Pensacola for this event with Freedom Sings USA.   The event was held at Warrior Beer Company in Pensacola, owned by veteran Gary Hefner .   We rolled into Pensacola around 5 pm Friday, dropped our bags at the hotel, and then made our way over to the Warrior Beer Company for a little meet and greet with our veterans.   Imagine my surprise when I found out that a long-time friend of mine, Larry Hudson , from nearby Gulf Shores, would be the veteran I would be writing with. More on that in a bit.     After our dinner, our songwriter group got on stage and sang a few songs.   After we wrapped up, we headed to a favorite Irish Pub, “McGuire’s,” and closed out the ...

New Song Recorded...Lulu...Book On The Way

BILL BLOG Friday April 25, 2025   Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday once again. A high of 71 today with more rain on the way.   YESTERDAY I wrote with young Taylon Hope for the first time in a long while. Taylon is now a Sophomore at Belmont, University here in Nashville, and she’s chasing her musical dreams. We were to write in person and then one of her professors scheduled a test that would have conflicted so we wrote online instead and created a fun song for her that will be something she can add to her set list when she’s out performing “live”.   I’m rooting for some of her dreams to come true as I am so many other young talents in this crazy creative town.   BURN ME DOWN An American Idol contestant from a year ago, Kennedy Reid reached out to me a few months ago through a producer friers asking for songs for consideration for an album she was going to record. I sent three or 4 songs and ,she recorded one of those that I w...

Home Again...Hamburger Day...Dollywood

BILL BLOG Wednesday May 28, 2025   Wednesday morning, and I’m back home in Nashville. Sunshine with a high of just 79 here in Nashville today.   YESTERDAY A long drive home from Pensacola from our Freedom Sings USA songwriters retreat with our veterans. 2 traffic jams with detours, and one last traffic jam as I was 5 miles away. So, a normal 7 to 8 hour drive took 9 to get home this time. But we made it safe and sound with a bag full of great memories from the Memorial Day weekend, honoring those who gave so much. And what a pleasure it was getting to write with my friend and Viet Nam veteran Larry Hudson who had quite the story to tell that we turned into a song.   NEXT UP Our next Freedom Sings USA weekend will be in the small town of Heyworth, Illinois June 18 and 19. We were there last year, and it seemed like the entire town showed up on the night all the writers performed those songs we wrote with their veterans. We are certainl...
