More Heat...French Family...A Big Boat

BILL BLOG

Wednesday July 30, 2025

The last Hump Day of July is on us, and it’s bringing more heat to Nashville with it. Another excessive heat warning is out with a high of 96 today.

YESTERDAY

I had the day off, and tried not to be outdoors as much as possible. Especially after the weather service issued an EXTREME HEAT WARNING. The heat index took it up to almost 115 degrees in Music City yesterday. The heat warning instructed folks to stay under the AC if possible. For the most part, I did my part.

I remember growing up in Missouri, and when I was young, my brothers and I worked in the hayfield. That was a HOT, dirty job, especially if you had to be the guy up in the barn loft stacking the bales. Really hot.

But I don’t remember it being as hot as it’s been over the past few years when you’re outdoors in the summer and you’re just standing doing nothing. And then again, maybe my memory has melted in the heat.

How hot was it yesterday in Nashville?

TSUNAMI

At least we are not dealing with a Tsunami in Tennessee, as they are out on the California coast and in Hawaii after that huge earthquake hit Russia…the biggest earthquake in 14 years. So far, everyone seems to be safe. It’s been a weird year for weather, and it’s not even August yet.

LAST NIGHT

I got out and heard the French Family Band, who were playing at the Station Inn.

Dad Stuie, Mom Camille, and son Sonny were terrific as always. The family band is from Australia-New Zealand, and they had cause to celebrate last night as Sonny just got his American citizenship the day before. Good for him. They and the band were admittedly tired because they’ve had two long days in the recording studio and then had that show last night. Could not tell it as their music was as great as always.

And Stuie did tell me that they recorded two of the songs that he and I have written together, so there was some great news. Can’t wait to hear their new album that Ricky Skaggs is producing.

THE NOMINATION

It was nice to see this yesterday.

That’s the song I’m a co-writer on for that song I wrote with Rick Lang and Jerry Salley, recorded, as you can see, by Jerry and the Oak Ridge Boys. I’m happy to be part of the Billy Blue family, and the label and the publishing company have several nominations this year. The awards show will be in mid-September, held in Chattanooga this year. Looking forward to going to this event for the first time.

SONG OF THE DAY

Speaking of the Bluegrass Awards. A few years ago, the Darrin and Brooke Aldridge song “I’m Going Under" was nominated for “Gospel Recording of the Year” but did not win. Really proud of this song that was inspired by something my friend Rylee Scott (daughter of Linda Davis and Lang Scott said about being baptized. “I’m Going Under”. Linda recorded a version of this song, as did my co-writer Karen Taylor Good. I’m making the Darin and Brooke version my “Song of the Day”.

HEALTH NOTES

According to the CDC, as many as 3 out of 4 Americans deal with chronic health issues.

A nutritionist reminds us that just 1 died Coke a day increases the chances of type 2 diabetes by as much as 38%.

Doctors say that COVID symptoms this summer look a lot like symptoms from earlier strains, such as fatigue, runny nose and a headache.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Now there’s a law firm for you.

THEM AND US

Bill Gates built a yacht. A really expensive super-yacht. And then he never set foot on it. So, he’s selling it. Asking price is just 645 MILLION. It’s hydrogen-powered, has a basketball court, multiple hot tubs, a cinema, AND a private hospital on board. So if you buy it and then get sick at the price you paid, you have your own hospital to check yourself into.

NO ROLL JELLY

Jelly Roll is saying he will soon be under 300 pounds. First time since middle school. Good for him. The question now is, if he loses his roll, do we just call him Jelly?

BACK TO SCHOOL

The shopping for school supplies has started. Yellow school buses will be rolling shortly to pick up your kids to take them to school. Yep, it’s such a sad day for parents.

TODAY’S HEADLINE

Woman Travels 500 Miles To Take The Easiest Driving Test…But Fails. (Hopefully, she was allowed to deduct the miles)

TODAY

I’ll be writing with Jerry Salley this morning, the head dude at Billy Blue Records, a songwriter, producer, performer, and he wears a bunch of other hats.

And he just received this wall-hanger from the Grammy folks for a song he helped write, “It Takes A Woman,” that landed on the award-winning Chris Stapleton album. You’re having a really good day in the music business when one of those certificates arrives in the mail.

Have a great Wednesday!

Pensacola...Writing With A Friend....Happy Memorial Day

BILL BLOG Monday May 26, 2025  And a good Memorial Day Monday morning to you from Pensacola, Florida.   THE WEEKEND Mine started Saturday morning by jumping the car with Steve Dean and making the trip from Nashville down here to beautiful Pensacola for this event with Freedom Sings USA.   The event was held at Warrior Beer Company in Pensacola, owned by veteran Gary Hefner .   We rolled into Pensacola around 5 pm Friday, dropped our bags at the hotel, and then made our way over to the Warrior Beer Company for a little meet and greet with our veterans.   Imagine my surprise when I found out that a long-time friend of mine, Larry Hudson , from nearby Gulf Shores, would be the veteran I would be writing with. More on that in a bit.     After our dinner, our songwriter group got on stage and sang a few songs.   After we wrapped up, we headed to a favorite Irish Pub, “McGuire’s,” and closed out the ...

New Song Recorded...Lulu...Book On The Way

BILL BLOG Friday April 25, 2025   Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday once again. A high of 71 today with more rain on the way.   YESTERDAY I wrote with young Taylon Hope for the first time in a long while. Taylon is now a Sophomore at Belmont, University here in Nashville, and she’s chasing her musical dreams. We were to write in person and then one of her professors scheduled a test that would have conflicted so we wrote online instead and created a fun song for her that will be something she can add to her set list when she’s out performing “live”.   I’m rooting for some of her dreams to come true as I am so many other young talents in this crazy creative town.   BURN ME DOWN An American Idol contestant from a year ago, Kennedy Reid reached out to me a few months ago through a producer friers asking for songs for consideration for an album she was going to record. I sent three or 4 songs and ,she recorded one of those that I w...

Home Again...Hamburger Day...Dollywood

BILL BLOG Wednesday May 28, 2025   Wednesday morning, and I’m back home in Nashville. Sunshine with a high of just 79 here in Nashville today.   YESTERDAY A long drive home from Pensacola from our Freedom Sings USA songwriters retreat with our veterans. 2 traffic jams with detours, and one last traffic jam as I was 5 miles away. So, a normal 7 to 8 hour drive took 9 to get home this time. But we made it safe and sound with a bag full of great memories from the Memorial Day weekend, honoring those who gave so much. And what a pleasure it was getting to write with my friend and Viet Nam veteran Larry Hudson who had quite the story to tell that we turned into a song.   NEXT UP Our next Freedom Sings USA weekend will be in the small town of Heyworth, Illinois June 18 and 19. We were there last year, and it seemed like the entire town showed up on the night all the writers performed those songs we wrote with their veterans. We are certainl...
