Fishing Song...Mainz Baseball...Beach Show Tonight

BILL BLOG

Tuesday July 22, 2025

Hello Tuesday. We’ve got a heat dome over Tennessee. Several other states as well. In fact, some health officials are warning us to NOT go out in the sun in 18 different states.

92 degrees under the heat dome in Nashville today.

YESTERDAY

I wrote a fun up-tempo bluegrass song with Kevin Williamson of the Williamson Branch Family Band. Kevin, 4 talented daughters, and his wife Debbie. Every one of them is musically talented. Here’s an example of what they do in this remake of the Glen Campbell hit “Southern Nights” that they recorded.

I brought an idea about how you have to remind yourself that you can’t work all of the time. You have to take time to spend time having a little fun, and having some of that fun with the ones you love…like your kids.

I think the song was inspired by memories of my Dad, who worked very hard, but always took time to throw me and my brothers into the truck to go fishing…or to softball games.

The chorus of our new song is:

He’d say you can work all day puttin’ up hay

And there’ll still be work to be done

So take a little time, cast a fishing line

Have yourself a little bit of fun

Thanks for always making time Dad.

SPEAKING OF KIDS

My daughter Heather sent me this from Germany yesterday, a delayed Father’s day gift.

That’s the baseball cap of the Mainz A’s Baseball Team over in Germany that my daughter and her husband Casey follow over there. I spent time taking my daughter to the baseball park, and she got hooked on the game like I did.

So, this is kind of a full circle story today about making time for your kids. I hope you make time for yours as well.

SONG OF THE DAY

Tonight I’m playing a “Trop-Rock” kind of show as musical guest of my friend Lauren Mascitti. More on that at the end of the Blog today.

This is the song I’m singing with the band tonight, “Don’t Come Knockin’ If The Tiki Hut Is Rockin” which was the Trop Rock Song of the Year that I wrote with Brent Burns a few years ago. It’s going to be a lot of fun singing this song with a full band tonight.

HEALTH NOTES

Cardiologists are warning those with high cholesterol to not overlook saturated fat consumption. There is a significant increase in heart disease risk with high consumption of saturated fats.

Several studies confirm that owning a dog helps relieve stress.

A man with the deadliest form of brain cancer has no signs of the disease after taking an experimental drug. 40-year-old Ben Trotman was diagnosed in 2022 with glioblastoma. Patients typically live an average of 15 months after that diagnosis. He received a medication called ipilimumab, and it worked. He was the only person in that clinical trial.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Yea!!!

EXPENSIVE BURGERS

Beef prices are soaring. Up 9% since January. Shrinking herds, droughts, and feed costs are all being blamed. If this keeps up I’ll be grilling Tofu and eating more “Impossible Burgers” at Burger King. Or maybe these…

SPEAKING OF MEAT

In order to eat a healthier breakfast, I eat a lot of turkey bacon. The question is, is it bacon if it has turkey in it? I know farmers “slop the hogs”…but do they “slop the turkeys” as well?  These are the questions that keep me up at night.

FUNNY MARRIAGE QUOTE

This one from comedian Jim Gaffigan, who says, “My wife had us register for fine china, because you never know when the Pope is going to swing by and want a microwaved hot dog on a $200 plate".

AWKWARD

Ever take an awkward family photo? The kind you take out in the yard and burn, or bury in a drawer somewhere, hoping it never gets out to the public? I blame Olan Mills for a lot of those.

If so, don’t worry. However awkward yours might be, you can’t top this one.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

My Mother Missed Her Own Funeral. (Don’t you hate it when that happens?)

TODAY

I’m off to write with the great Jimmy Fortune today. Such a treat…always. Jimmy was part of my songwriter round just a few weeks ago at the world-famous Bluebird Café, and he just killed the audience every time he sang.

Here’s one of those moments when he sang his patriotic song “More Than A Name On A Wall” that the Statler Brothers recorded when he was their high tenor singer. Hard following that guy in a songwriter round.  Geez. Watch the video and see Jimmy bring the house down with that great song he wrote.

Tonight I’ll be a guest for Lauren Mascitti’s EP Release party for her first-ever tropical project.

I’ll be one of several guests who get up with the band to sing a Trop-Rock kind of song. The Margarita blenders should be working overtime tonight.

Have a great Tuesday!

Pensacola...Writing With A Friend....Happy Memorial Day

BILL BLOG Monday May 26, 2025  And a good Memorial Day Monday morning to you from Pensacola, Florida.   THE WEEKEND Mine started Saturday morning by jumping the car with Steve Dean and making the trip from Nashville down here to beautiful Pensacola for this event with Freedom Sings USA.   The event was held at Warrior Beer Company in Pensacola, owned by veteran Gary Hefner .   We rolled into Pensacola around 5 pm Friday, dropped our bags at the hotel, and then made our way over to the Warrior Beer Company for a little meet and greet with our veterans.   Imagine my surprise when I found out that a long-time friend of mine, Larry Hudson , from nearby Gulf Shores, would be the veteran I would be writing with. More on that in a bit.     After our dinner, our songwriter group got on stage and sang a few songs.   After we wrapped up, we headed to a favorite Irish Pub, “McGuire’s,” and closed out the ...

New Song Recorded...Lulu...Book On The Way

BILL BLOG Friday April 25, 2025   Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday once again. A high of 71 today with more rain on the way.   YESTERDAY I wrote with young Taylon Hope for the first time in a long while. Taylon is now a Sophomore at Belmont, University here in Nashville, and she’s chasing her musical dreams. We were to write in person and then one of her professors scheduled a test that would have conflicted so we wrote online instead and created a fun song for her that will be something she can add to her set list when she’s out performing “live”.   I’m rooting for some of her dreams to come true as I am so many other young talents in this crazy creative town.   BURN ME DOWN An American Idol contestant from a year ago, Kennedy Reid reached out to me a few months ago through a producer friers asking for songs for consideration for an album she was going to record. I sent three or 4 songs and ,she recorded one of those that I w...

Home Again...Hamburger Day...Dollywood

BILL BLOG Wednesday May 28, 2025   Wednesday morning, and I’m back home in Nashville. Sunshine with a high of just 79 here in Nashville today.   YESTERDAY A long drive home from Pensacola from our Freedom Sings USA songwriters retreat with our veterans. 2 traffic jams with detours, and one last traffic jam as I was 5 miles away. So, a normal 7 to 8 hour drive took 9 to get home this time. But we made it safe and sound with a bag full of great memories from the Memorial Day weekend, honoring those who gave so much. And what a pleasure it was getting to write with my friend and Viet Nam veteran Larry Hudson who had quite the story to tell that we turned into a song.   NEXT UP Our next Freedom Sings USA weekend will be in the small town of Heyworth, Illinois June 18 and 19. We were there last year, and it seemed like the entire town showed up on the night all the writers performed those songs we wrote with their veterans. We are certainl...
