Farm Writing...Brian Wilson...Runaway Mule

BILL BLOG

Thursday June 12, 2025

And…it’s Thursday morning. It will get warm today in Nashville. A high of 87 today.

YESTERDAY

I was at Wil Nance’s little farm and somewhere between the ducks, the chickens, the rabbits, and the cats, Wil, Lauren Mascitti, and I wrote a new tune from an idea I had. Wil got a great groove going for it, Lauren added some harmony, and the next thing you know, we’ve got a song.

Those two bring a ton of energy to a session, so that makes it even more fun. Before we wrote, Lauren treated us to this new beach song she wrote, “Somewhere In The Caribbean”. Check it out. It will take you to the beach if only in your mind.

THE BEACH BOY

I was sad to see that Brian Wilson, the true genius of the Beach Boys, passed away at the age of 82. He could hear everyone’s part, show them what to play, and tell them which notes to sing. The guy could hear things most humans never will, musically speaking

I was a country kid growing up in Missouri. But one of the few rock and roll albums I bought was this one from the Beach Boys. I wore the tracks off that vinyl album. Their harmony was just so great to listen to.

His fear of flying forced him to cancel performing with the Beach Boys, and it was Glen Campbell who replaced Brian.

Many consider “God Only Knows” off their groundbreaking album “Pet Sounds” to be their greatest song, including Paul McCartney, who said that song moved him to tears.

But if I had to pick a personal favorite, “In My Room” would be near the top of my list.

RIP Brian.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s tune is a funny song I wrote with Brent Burns. It’s a funny true story we put to music,  "Mama Dropped The F Bomb”. You’ll get a laugh out of it…or should.

My Gulf Shores buddy and I have written a lot of funny songs through the years, and we’ve done a lot of shows together as well. Brent recently underwent back surgery in New York, and he’s now back home trying to recuperate. It’s a slow go…but it sounds like he’s making slow but steady progress. I’m hoping he will heal sooner than later.

HEALTH NOTES

Dr. Pepper Zero Sugar recall has been upgraded as the FDA is warning it’s a serious health risk for diabetics.

A new study claims that a drug called levothyroxine, the second-most-commonly prescribed medication among older adults, has been linked to a higher risk of bone loss.

Yet another study suggests that negative thoughts might be changing your brain in surprising ways. Research is showing that negativity bias correlates with depression, anxiety and memory problems.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Well, at least you don’t have to wait to get shot.

HOME SWEET MISSILE HOME

Some folks have converted old missile silos into homes. One of those owners, up in Sprague, Washington just listed their silo for 1.45 million dollars.

I went to college in Warrensburg, Missouri. The road leading there was dotted with missile silos, part of nearby Whiteman Air Force Base nearby. I would have never thought they’d take the missiles out and replace the warheads with couches and TV sets.

FATHER’S DAY

It’s just 3 days away. Let the Dad jokes commence.

I only know 25 letters in the alphabet. I don’t know Y.

Where do you learn how to make a banana split? Sundae school.

And just one more.

This graveyard must be overcrowded. People must be dying to get in.

ONCE A CRIMINAL

Police arrested a guy in Murray, Kentucky, for turning raccoons loose in a store. He was arrested once before. He tried to get away from the police in a high-speed mule chase. Wow. Pretty much made a jackass of himself huh?

You can’t make that kind of stuff up.

MARRIAGE JOKE

My wife is mad. She thinks I don’t like her cooking. To prove her wrong, I had another slice of her gravy.

TODAY’S HEADLINE

Federal Agents Raid Gun Shop, Find Weapons. (What are the odds?)

TODAY

I’m writing with hit writer Bobby Boyd for only the second time. The first time was several years ago. Bobby wrote the smash hit “Broken Road” for Rascal Flatts, “Two of a Kind, Workin’ on a Full House” for Garth Brooks, and many more. Looking forward to writing with him again today.

Have a great Thursday!

Pensacola...Writing With A Friend....Happy Memorial Day

BILL BLOG Monday May 26, 2025  And a good Memorial Day Monday morning to you from Pensacola, Florida.   THE WEEKEND Mine started Saturday morning by jumping the car with Steve Dean and making the trip from Nashville down here to beautiful Pensacola for this event with Freedom Sings USA.   The event was held at Warrior Beer Company in Pensacola, owned by veteran Gary Hefner .   We rolled into Pensacola around 5 pm Friday, dropped our bags at the hotel, and then made our way over to the Warrior Beer Company for a little meet and greet with our veterans.   Imagine my surprise when I found out that a long-time friend of mine, Larry Hudson , from nearby Gulf Shores, would be the veteran I would be writing with. More on that in a bit.     After our dinner, our songwriter group got on stage and sang a few songs.   After we wrapped up, we headed to a favorite Irish Pub, “McGuire’s,” and closed out the ...

New Song Recorded...Lulu...Book On The Way

BILL BLOG Friday April 25, 2025   Here comes the weekend. It’s Friday once again. A high of 71 today with more rain on the way.   YESTERDAY I wrote with young Taylon Hope for the first time in a long while. Taylon is now a Sophomore at Belmont, University here in Nashville, and she’s chasing her musical dreams. We were to write in person and then one of her professors scheduled a test that would have conflicted so we wrote online instead and created a fun song for her that will be something she can add to her set list when she’s out performing “live”.   I’m rooting for some of her dreams to come true as I am so many other young talents in this crazy creative town.   BURN ME DOWN An American Idol contestant from a year ago, Kennedy Reid reached out to me a few months ago through a producer friers asking for songs for consideration for an album she was going to record. I sent three or 4 songs and ,she recorded one of those that I w...

Home Again...Hamburger Day...Dollywood

BILL BLOG Wednesday May 28, 2025   Wednesday morning, and I’m back home in Nashville. Sunshine with a high of just 79 here in Nashville today.   YESTERDAY A long drive home from Pensacola from our Freedom Sings USA songwriters retreat with our veterans. 2 traffic jams with detours, and one last traffic jam as I was 5 miles away. So, a normal 7 to 8 hour drive took 9 to get home this time. But we made it safe and sound with a bag full of great memories from the Memorial Day weekend, honoring those who gave so much. And what a pleasure it was getting to write with my friend and Viet Nam veteran Larry Hudson who had quite the story to tell that we turned into a song.   NEXT UP Our next Freedom Sings USA weekend will be in the small town of Heyworth, Illinois June 18 and 19. We were there last year, and it seemed like the entire town showed up on the night all the writers performed those songs we wrote with their veterans. We are certainl...
