A Country Song...Show Dates...Pigeon Pageant

BILL BLOG

Wednesday June 11, 2025

Hump Day Wednesday is on us. Sunny with a high of 86 in Nashville today.

YESTERDAY

I finished up yet another news song idea that Alex Miller had. Really great country song idea. It’s pretty much always a “country” song if it has the word “Dallas” in it…and this one does. It’s certainly a song we feel good about having in the catalog, as it will be highly “pitchable” for traditional country artists. So, we’re going to start pitching this one right away. Alex is friends with more than one traditional country artist, including Tracy Byrd from Beaumont, Texas, who is on the new single “The Byrd” with Alex. I have a feeling that at the very least, it could be something that Tracy listens to. Time will tell, as always, with songs that are looking for homes.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s song is a beach song written with Pensacola native Jessie Ritter. It was the first song we wrote together one day in Nashville. The song is called “Take Me There”…and if you hit the link, you can watch and hear Jessie sing our song from an appropriate place, “The Flora-Bama” down in Perdido Key, the area this song was written about. She gets the crowd singing along with her.

HEALTH NOTES

Some doctors are saying that “ditching” your lawnmower might be a good idea. Mowing, raking, digging, and lifting can be physically taxing. Back pain, muscle strains, and joint injuries happen.

A rare type of cancer is growing among millennials and members of Generation X, new research shows. Diagnoses of appendix cancer have tripled in the U.S. for people born between 1976 and 1984.

Research says making music boosts brain and mental health. (And just when I thought that Karaoke might finally die.)

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Yep, there’s no couch to lie on either.

BASEBALL STADIUMS

I’m always interested in reading sports columns that rank the best Major League baseball parks in the country. I’ve sat in most of them, so it’s fun for me to compare my likes to whomever is making up their list.

The online publication Sportsnaut.com listed their Top 10 Best Stadium Experiences. In reverse order those would be:

10 Kansas City

9 Yankee Stadium

8 Seattle

7 Busch Stadium St. Louis

6 Dodger Stadium LA

5 Petco in San Diego

4 Pittsburgh

3 Wrigley in Chicago

2 Fenway in Boston

And they list their “best stadium experience…San Francisco’s ballpark.

I’ve not seen Frisco’s ballpark that sits right on the water, but I would agree with a lot of the choices here. The old ones are still my favorite. Wrigley and Fenway.

And I know I’m very biased, but my Cincinnati Reds Ballpark, Great American Ballpark, is always way down the list of favorites.  I was just there this weekend. Buy a ticket on the second level where you get to see the game unfold beneath you, and you get to see the view of Northern Kentucky, as well as being able to watch the boats come down the Ohio River. Hard to beat.

 Did I mention I’m biased?

QUEEN PIGEON

In NYC, they are holding the first-ever Pigeon Impersonation Pageant.

Uh huh. All I ask is that they keep the contestants away from my car.

HARRY POTTER

HBO is getting ready to release a new series on the Harry Potter movies. This will be a TV series. Here’s your new Harry.

And this is the choice for Hermione

And for Ron Weasley

Actor John Lithgow will play the role of Albus Dumbledore.

Muggles, Hogwarts, and wands are all coming back to the tube.

BEER KISSES

How about this? “Blue Moon Beer” is offering up lip gloss.

I can’t wait for the Guinness underarm deodorant.

TODAY’S HEADLINE

I Was Mugged By A Parrot. (And the parrot would NOT keep quiet about it)

TODAY

I’ll be out at Wil Nance’s little writing shack today, writing with him and our mutual friend Lauren Mascitti.

Wil is going to be part of my Bluebird Café songwriter round on June 25, along with songwriters Brian White and Jimmy Fortune at 9 pm that evening.

And Lauren will be joining both Wil and me at this year’s Gatlinburg Songwriters Festival on August 15 and 16.

Have a great Wednesday!

ACM Awards Show...Frank Brown Songwriters Festival...Mother's Day Weekend

BILL BLOG Friday May 9, 2025  Here we go sneaking into a weekend. It’s Friday. Just 71 for the high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY My Thursday morning started online writing a new up-tempo bluegrass song with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania. Troy plays every instrument that has strings on it, sings, writes, produces…not much he can’t do musically. When he lived in Nashville, he hung out a lot with Tom T Hall , played on numerous recording sessions, and was out on the road playing some instrument with the likes of Eric Church , The Isaacs and a long list of country stars.   But several years ago, Troy moved back to PA with his family and plays some shows up there with his family band, but still does a lot of recording work from home. He told me yesterday that his daughter may enroll at a University in Nashville next year and that might bring him back to Music City. It would be great to have him here and get to work him in person more.   ...

Friends Honored...Father's Day...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Monday June 16, 2025   Another Monday has rolled around. And it’s a packing day for me with a road trip tomorrow to Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog.   We will hit 85 for a high today in Nashville.   Meanwhile, over the weekend, the National Weather Service issued the “first-ever” heat warning for Alaska.   THE WEEKEND Friday morning, I wrote a new song with my friend Rick Lang , who was in town for a week’s worth of songwriting. Rick lives out in New Hampshire, but drives to Nashville at least once a month to write. He always brings great song ideas with him, and we wrote one of those Friday morning.  His “Blue Collar Gospel” album, “Songs of Rick Lang” has done very well for Billy Blue Records. I was blessed to be a writer on the title track that was recorded by our friend Jerry Salley with the Oak Ridge Boys .     And he’s working towards another full album project that will be kind of un...

Illinois Today...Some Nominations...Bluebird Tickets On Sale

BILL BLOG Wednesday June 18, 2025   Good morning from Heyworth, Illinois. We have a 74 degree high on tap here today with some rain mixed with the sun.   YESTERDAY Myself and 4 other Nashville songwriters made the trip from Nashville up to Heyworth for our Freedom Sings USA retreat here where today we will write some veteran stories into songs.   You know you’re in central Illinois when you roll past these bad boys.   This is our second trip to Heyworth, which is just 10 minutes away from Bloomington, Illinois. The event is held at the local American Legion Hall, where they treated me, Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean & Bill DiLuigi to a great dinner. And then the 4 of us played music for those gathered before we came back to the hotel to rest up for today.  Small town, great folks who are proud of their town, and patriotic.   LUCKY One of the founders of Freedom Sings USA is Don Goodman , who is also a hit writ...
