Storms Again...New Show...Mattresses

BILL BLOG

Friday May 16, 2025

Bring on the weekend. It’s Friday! A high of 84 today, and we’re looking for rain and possibly some severe weather. Hail, wind, tornado, all the good stuff that we’ve already had too much of this year. Weather folks are calling it a “Monster” storm that cutting a path across the Midwest. Never a good thing.

YESTERDAY

My writing appointment was with Kevin Williamson of the Williamson Branch Family Band that features Kevin, his wife, and three talented daughters. Kevin just became a Grandpa, so here’s to that! He and his girls will be playing shows all over the country this summer on a tour that starts soon. If you get a chance to see them, do so. You’ll be highly entertained.

Kevin brought a chorus idea of a song with him, and told me it’s been one he’s been trying to finish for years. I got to jump in and help him finish that thought about loving the road life. I could easily relate to the sentiment. I’m glad he decided to share the idea with me.

NEW SHOW

On July 8, I’ve been invited to join a songwriter’s round hosted by Canadian Ben Klick. My friend Alex Miller and Turk McNamara will also be joining us for this songwriter show at the Listening Room Café in Nashville. It’s dinner and a show, so bring some friends and join us! Thank you to Ben for inviting me.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s song is “That Look On Your Face,” which is a very fun song I wrote with Jimmy Fortune and Sydni Perry that was recorded by Jeannie Kendall, who was half of the Kendall’s duo with her Dad Royce back in the day. They scored big hits with songs like “Heaven’s Just A Sin Away” and “Thank God For The Radio” to name a couple.

A couple of years ago, Jeannie recorded a new solo album that I’m proud to have 4 songs on. “That Look On Your Face” is one of those.

HEALTH NOTES

The Journal of the American Heart Association published a study that points out that men die from broken heart syndrome at more than twice the rate compared to women.

Good Housekeeping says we should be cleaning our sheets once a week. The sheets collect germs, dead skin, sweat, pet danger, and body oils. Not to mention dust mites that can trigger allergies and asthma attacks.

There’s a polio outbreak in Papua New Guinea. A vaccination campaign is being prepared.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

 Can’t get enough bosses now.

MEMORIAL DAY

That’s coming up next on May 26. And of course, mattress day sales are already popping up everywhere. I’m not sure how Memorial Day got linked to buying a mattress. Weird. I’m happy with my mattress, but I might be tempted to buy a new mattress that looks like a piece of toast.

Wonder if there’s a switch on the side that can “pop” you out of bed in the morning?

SQUAWK

A man stuffed six parrots in his boots and tried to sneak them into the US near the California border. Authorities said they noticed “unusual clothing bulges”. I’ll bet.

Customs and Border folks have caught folks trying to sneak a number of unusual things in over the years. They once nabbed a guy disguised as a car seat trying to gain entry. Uh huh.

BUY GOLD

Costco members are now limited to buying one bar of gold because gold is on such a hot streak right now. One 24-carat gold bar costs $3,279.99 right now at Costco. 19 months ago, the same bar cost $2,000.

If you shop at Costco, you can drop over three grand on a gold bar, and still afford a hot dog that costs $1.50.

Heck, I might join so that I can say, “I’d like a gold bar, and a hot dog…plain.”

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Drunk Woman Steals A Ferry And Yells: I’m Jack Sparrow! (And then she probably leaned over the rail a screamed, “I’m On Top Of The World”!!!!

TODAY

I’m back writing with my friends Jenny Tolman and her husband, Dave Brainard.

We’ll have fun catching up and writing today.

Have a great weekend.

BILL BLOG Friday May 9, 2025  Here we go sneaking into a weekend. It’s Friday. Just 71 for the high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY My Thursday morning started online writing a new up-tempo bluegrass song with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania. Troy plays every instrument that has strings on it, sings, writes, produces…not much he can’t do musically. When he lived in Nashville, he hung out a lot with Tom T Hall , played on numerous recording sessions, and was out on the road playing some instrument with the likes of Eric Church , The Isaacs and a long list of country stars.   But several years ago, Troy moved back to PA with his family and plays some shows up there with his family band, but still does a lot of recording work from home. He told me yesterday that his daughter may enroll at a University in Nashville next year and that might bring him back to Music City. It would be great to have him here and get to work him in person more.   ...

Friends Honored...Father's Day...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Monday June 16, 2025   Another Monday has rolled around. And it’s a packing day for me with a road trip tomorrow to Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog.   We will hit 85 for a high today in Nashville.   Meanwhile, over the weekend, the National Weather Service issued the “first-ever” heat warning for Alaska.   THE WEEKEND Friday morning, I wrote a new song with my friend Rick Lang , who was in town for a week’s worth of songwriting. Rick lives out in New Hampshire, but drives to Nashville at least once a month to write. He always brings great song ideas with him, and we wrote one of those Friday morning.  His “Blue Collar Gospel” album, “Songs of Rick Lang” has done very well for Billy Blue Records. I was blessed to be a writer on the title track that was recorded by our friend Jerry Salley with the Oak Ridge Boys .     And he’s working towards another full album project that will be kind of un...

Illinois Today...Some Nominations...Bluebird Tickets On Sale

BILL BLOG Wednesday June 18, 2025   Good morning from Heyworth, Illinois. We have a 74 degree high on tap here today with some rain mixed with the sun.   YESTERDAY Myself and 4 other Nashville songwriters made the trip from Nashville up to Heyworth for our Freedom Sings USA retreat here where today we will write some veteran stories into songs.   You know you’re in central Illinois when you roll past these bad boys.   This is our second trip to Heyworth, which is just 10 minutes away from Bloomington, Illinois. The event is held at the local American Legion Hall, where they treated me, Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean & Bill DiLuigi to a great dinner. And then the 4 of us played music for those gathered before we came back to the hotel to rest up for today.  Small town, great folks who are proud of their town, and patriotic.   LUCKY One of the founders of Freedom Sings USA is Don Goodman , who is also a hit writ...
