New Song...Studio Time...Happy Anniversary

BILL BLOG

Thursday May 22, 2025

And now it’s Thursday morning, as another week is just flying by. We have a postcard kind of day on tap in Nashville with sunshine and a high of 79. After weeks of storms…we’ll take it!

YESTERDAY

In the words of one of my co-writers yesterday, Andrea Pearson, “we wrote something vibey”. And indeed, I think we did, along with Caroline Owens, who joined the two of us at my publishing company. Andrea brought yesterday’s idea, and both she and Caroline play guitar well, so that added something special to the new song.

It was the first time for this trio, although I’ve written with both of them separately multiple times. There was great fun and chemistry in the room yesterday morning.

 STUDIO TIME

I left our writing session just a little early because I had to be in the studio for the recording of a song I wrote with Wil Nance and Irene Kelley.

We recorded yesterday in the basement of a house owned by Jay DeMarcus, the bass player for Rascal Flatts. Trust me, he doesn’t live in a double-wide. Jay has become a notable producer in Nashville, and I’m sure he’s produced several of his acts in the studio we were in yesterday.

I am always amazed at the talent of the musicians in this town. Wil played the musicians our song, and in less than 45 minutes, it sounded like a doggone record.

In a couple of weeks, we’ll put a vocal on the tracks these great musicians gave us, and then we’ll start pitching the song in hopes that some artist will love it enough to record it.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

Happy 7th anniversary to my daughter Heather and her husband Casey, who are celebrating in Italy today.

It's hard to believe it's been 7 years since my wife and I watched them exchange wedding vows in Ireland.

The two of them are there for some friends who are getting married. And check this out. Casey posted a little “drone” VIDEO of the scenery they are looking at there. My wife and I toured Italy a few years ago, and the brochures do not lie. It’s beautiful. I’m glad our kids are getting to see it as well.

KRISTY COX

My bluegrass artist friend is on a two-week tour with her band “Grasstime” in Europe that’s about to wrap up in Ireland.

Kristy has recorded several of my songs over the years, and she used this one “Some Things Don’t Go Together” in this VIDEO that shows some of the highlights of their tour. Pretty cool.

SONG OF THE DAY

Since I mentioned Irene Kelley, today’s song is by Irene “Get Behind Me Satan.” It’s a song the two of us wrote a couple of years ago that’s on the current album from Irene. Up-tempo and fun with a gospel theme.

HEALTH NOTES

Some “soon to be” Moms on social media are ordering up tango tea, or the passion tango tea lemonade in hopes that it will send them to the hospital to give birth. An ob-gyn says, “there’s no magic to it”.

A new study concludes that social media may cause depression among young people

The WHO claims that 30 to 50% of all cancer cases are preventable with a healthy diet and lifestyle habits.

EXPENSIVE HOMES

Realtor.com says a starter home in 28 different states will set you back 1 million dollars. For a STARTER home. No wonder more and more kids are living longer at their parents’ home.

And that reminds me of a funny song from my dear friend Brent Burns, who is recovering from back surgery in New York right now. (Get better pal).

That song is “Please Don’t Let That Kid Move Back Home.” No, I did not write this one with him, but I wish I had!

ALSO EXPENSIVE

That would be first dates. According to Newsweek, first dates on average in the northeast cost $138.40. In the west, it’s $133. And it’s the cheapest in the Midwest. (We use coupons) $118.50. And on average, Americans have gone on $3,052.12 worth of dates in the past years.

Take her to Costco guys. They can shop, and you can get a couple of hot dogs for just 3 bucks. She’ll LOVE that date with you.

TIM McGRAW

Here’s an honest statement from the country music superstar. “I’m too old to sing about tailgates and bikinis”. He’s 58.

And I’m thinking now that I might write that into a country song, “Tailgates and Bikinis.” Stay tuned.

MEMORIAL DAY

The experts are saying we will have record-breaking traffic over the holiday weekend. I’m about to find out if that’s true, as I have a road trip Saturday from Nashville down to Pensacola to spend the Memorial Day weekend with our veterans and Freedom Sings USA writing songs. And on Memorial Day, I’ll be part of a large outdoor concert where myself and 4 other songwriters will sing those songs we write with veterans the day before.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

TODAY

I’m back in a writing room today with Caroline Owens for the third day in a row. And today my buddy and hit writer Steve Dean will join the two of us. Looking forward to that.

Have a great Thursday!

BILL BLOG Friday May 9, 2025  Here we go sneaking into a weekend. It’s Friday. Just 71 for the high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY My Thursday morning started online writing a new up-tempo bluegrass song with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania. Troy plays every instrument that has strings on it, sings, writes, produces…not much he can’t do musically. When he lived in Nashville, he hung out a lot with Tom T Hall , played on numerous recording sessions, and was out on the road playing some instrument with the likes of Eric Church , The Isaacs and a long list of country stars.   But several years ago, Troy moved back to PA with his family and plays some shows up there with his family band, but still does a lot of recording work from home. He told me yesterday that his daughter may enroll at a University in Nashville next year and that might bring him back to Music City. It would be great to have him here and get to work him in person more.   ...

Friends Honored...Father's Day...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Monday June 16, 2025   Another Monday has rolled around. And it’s a packing day for me with a road trip tomorrow to Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog.   We will hit 85 for a high today in Nashville.   Meanwhile, over the weekend, the National Weather Service issued the “first-ever” heat warning for Alaska.   THE WEEKEND Friday morning, I wrote a new song with my friend Rick Lang , who was in town for a week’s worth of songwriting. Rick lives out in New Hampshire, but drives to Nashville at least once a month to write. He always brings great song ideas with him, and we wrote one of those Friday morning.  His “Blue Collar Gospel” album, “Songs of Rick Lang” has done very well for Billy Blue Records. I was blessed to be a writer on the title track that was recorded by our friend Jerry Salley with the Oak Ridge Boys .     And he’s working towards another full album project that will be kind of un...

Illinois Today...Some Nominations...Bluebird Tickets On Sale

BILL BLOG Wednesday June 18, 2025   Good morning from Heyworth, Illinois. We have a 74 degree high on tap here today with some rain mixed with the sun.   YESTERDAY Myself and 4 other Nashville songwriters made the trip from Nashville up to Heyworth for our Freedom Sings USA retreat here where today we will write some veteran stories into songs.   You know you’re in central Illinois when you roll past these bad boys.   This is our second trip to Heyworth, which is just 10 minutes away from Bloomington, Illinois. The event is held at the local American Legion Hall, where they treated me, Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean & Bill DiLuigi to a great dinner. And then the 4 of us played music for those gathered before we came back to the hotel to rest up for today.  Small town, great folks who are proud of their town, and patriotic.   LUCKY One of the founders of Freedom Sings USA is Don Goodman , who is also a hit writ...
