BILL BLOG
Wednesday May 15, 2025
Thursday morning and we’re already at the halfway point of May. And all of a sudden it’s summer as the high today in Nashville will be up near 90.
How hot is it? I saw a funeral procession pull through a Dairy Queen.
YESTERDAY
Tim Stafford and I hooked up online and wrote a new bluegrass song to add to our growing catalog. Always a pleasure writing with Tim, who’s a bluegrass teacher in college. Yes, you can major in bluegrass music if you attend Eastern Tennessee State University. (ETSU).
He’s also a terrific guitar player, with instrumental albums to prove it. He’s an author and wrote a book about Tony Rice, who many consider to be the greatest flat picker ever.
And on top of all that, he’s a member of the prestigious band “Blue Highway”. Yesterday I mentioned the Blue Highway Festival that is held in Stone Gap, Virginia each year. I thought the festival had just concluded. It’s still coming up, with quite the lineup of entertainers.
This year the festival runs October 8-12.
THE BOOK
My wife’s first-ever book is getting closer to being on book shelves. She and her publishing company are working on the cover design. This is not it, but it’s a look at where the art folks may be going.
I’m excited for folks to read what my wife created from nothing. It’s so good, we think there’s a chance that it could adapt to a TV series or movie. Time will tell. It’s getting exciting here at the Whyte House.
SONG OF THE DAY
“Details” is a song that Tim Stafford and I wrote that was recorded by Nick Dumas, a great grass artist who lives in Wisconsin. Tim and I wrote this with Becky Buller. Becky has been the Songwriter of the Year as has Tim. So, guess whose left out of this picture! Nick did our song such justice. He tore it up. Take a listen.
HEALTH NOTES
Experts are saying that poison hemlock is spreading like crazy across the country, anywhere where vegetation is unmanaged, particularly along roadways and alleys. A contact herbicide seems to be the best thing to treat it.
US researchers have found that taurine, an amino acid often added to energy drinks such as Red Bull and Celsius, can act as a fuel source for leukemia cancer cells, which develop in bone marrow.
A report warns that arsenic and cadmium levels are dangerously high in store-bought rice.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
I always suspected that was true.
POPULAR PLACE TO EAT
Yesterday, the online publication listed the Top 10 Casual Dining Restaurants in America. Here’s a look at the top 5.
5…Buffalo Wild Wings
4…Applebees
3…Chilis
2…Olive Garden
And the new #1 spot is Texas Roadhouse, leaping over Olive Garden. Olive Garden had been #1 for a long time. So we are choosing steak over a big bowl of salad for a change.
MEANWHILE AT STARBUCKS
1,000 Baristas are on strike because they don’t like the uniform change. The company wants all baristas to wear a solid black shirt and khaki or black or blue denim bottoms underneath those green aprons.
In all the years I’ve worked, I don’t think I ever had to wear a uniform of any kind. I did have to wear a green army suit when I was in ROTC at college. Does that count?
MARRIAGE JOKES
The late Mickey Rooney, who was married multiple times said this.
“Always get married in the morning. That way if it doesn’t work out you haven’t wasted the entire day.”
CHEAP
I scanned through an article that was listing cool things you can buy for under $35 on Amazon right now. This magnetic stove top shelf was one of those items.
You can put your seasonings, oil, etc, on the top of the stove and they won’t slide off. We don’t have a stove that has a shelf, but my Mom sure did. And the only thing I remember sitting on that shelf was a Crisco or Folger can that held the leftover grease to be used again…and again. Now that’s country!
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
State Population To Double By 2040. Babies To Blame. (Hard to dispute that)
TODAY
I’m writing with Kevin Williamson for the second time today at my publishing company. Kevin is the Father in the Williamson Branch Family Band.
We’ll have fun chasing a new song today.
Have a great Thursday!
