Cinco de Late...Disney...The Byrd

BILL BLOG

Tuesday May 6, 2025

Here comes Tuesday. It’s just 46 degrees as I begin today’s Blog with a high of 71 expected. A bit cool for Tennessee at this time of year.

YESTERDAY

Pretty uneventful Monday around the Whyte House. I somehow forgot yesterday was Cinco de Mayo so the margarita blender went untouched. So, I’ll try to make up for that in the next paragraph.

SONG OF THE DAY

Had I realized yesterday was indeed Cinco de Mayo I would have chosen Margarita Smile as my “Song of the Day” choice. So, I’m a day late and a margarita short here. But this is a fun song Brent Burns wrote a lot of but I got invited to help shape it up a little more. And that’s what we did.  This song turned out to be the title track for one of the numerous Trop Rock albums.

Turn up your volume and your margarita blender and listen.

HEALTH NOTES

A new study published in the British Journal of Medicine found that just 75 minutes of moderate-intensity physical exercise per week was associated with a 17% decrease in cardiovascular disease risk, a 7% drop in cancer risk and a 23% reduction in early death.

This is eye-opening. A new study claims that people who pay more in taxes could be less likely to die from cancer. Here’s a LINK for that article.

Tomatoes sold in 14 states have been recalled due to a salmonella risk.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Every golfer would agree.

DISNEY EXPENSIVE

A Father of 5 put up a video on X documenting how much a 1-day trip to Disney World cost him: $1,400 for one day in the park. The video has been viewed over 7.7 million times. He’s a local, so imagine how much it would set back a family of 5 who flew into Orlando and spent multiple days.

I see more trips to Chuck E Cheese. I’m sure the parents can convince their kids that the ball pit is just as exciting as Space Mountain.

SPEAKING OF KIDS

How about the 7-year-old boy in Ogden, Utah, who drove his little sister 9 miles to a McDonald’s to try and get her a Happy Meal? True story. Police had to call the parents after the car ran over a curb strip and they questioned the young man.

Pretty sure his Father has McGrounded the kid.

GULF OF WHAT?

The bill to rename the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America is up for a full House vote.  I don’t know. I write a lot of beach songs, many of them with lines that include the “Gulf of Mexico”.

I’m on the side of a friend of mine who’s written a lot of beach songs who points out that “Gulf Of America” is hard to rhyme.

MARRIAGE QUOTE

Just think, if it weren’t for marriage, men would go through life thinking they had no faults at all.

MOTHERS DAY

It’s sneaking up this weekend. What to get her. Pressure. I’m not a lot of help…but…I do think you might not want to gift Mom with one of these. Pretty sure.

HAPPIEST CITIES

The publication Manual just listed their happiest cities in the world. Not one U.S. city made the list. Their top 5 are:

5…Antwerp, Belgium

4…Aarhus, Denmark (I had to look that one up)

3…Singapore

2…Zurich, Switzerland

And the Happiest City on the Planet according to them, is Copenhagen, Denmark

LESS GENERALS

US Defense Secretary Hegseth is saying he’s going to cut the number of Generals we have in the military by 20%. More soldiers, less generals seems to be the theme. And that news makes me think of this SONG.

TODAY’S HEADLINE

Prisoner Serving 2,000-Year Sentence Could Face More Time. (Some real optimistic thinking there)

TODAY

I’m off to write with my American Idol friend Alex Miller again this morning. This is a brand-new VIDEO of a new song, “The Byrd,” that features my friend Alex along with 9’s country star Tracy Byrd. I did not help write this one (dang it) Pretty entertaining.

And joining us today will be hit writer, and one of my favorites Wyn Varble who wrote hits like “Have You Forgotten” for Daryl Worley, and “Waiting on a Woman” for Brad Paisley to name just a couple. Wyn also writes funny songs like I do. Here’s an EXAMPLE of that.

Should be a fun morning.

Have a great Tuesday!

ACM Awards Show...Frank Brown Songwriters Festival...Mother's Day Weekend

BILL BLOG Friday May 9, 2025  Here we go sneaking into a weekend. It’s Friday. Just 71 for the high today in Nashville.   YESTERDAY My Thursday morning started online writing a new up-tempo bluegrass song with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania. Troy plays every instrument that has strings on it, sings, writes, produces…not much he can’t do musically. When he lived in Nashville, he hung out a lot with Tom T Hall , played on numerous recording sessions, and was out on the road playing some instrument with the likes of Eric Church , The Isaacs and a long list of country stars.   But several years ago, Troy moved back to PA with his family and plays some shows up there with his family band, but still does a lot of recording work from home. He told me yesterday that his daughter may enroll at a University in Nashville next year and that might bring him back to Music City. It would be great to have him here and get to work him in person more.   ...

Friends Honored...Father's Day...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Monday June 16, 2025   Another Monday has rolled around. And it’s a packing day for me with a road trip tomorrow to Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog.   We will hit 85 for a high today in Nashville.   Meanwhile, over the weekend, the National Weather Service issued the “first-ever” heat warning for Alaska.   THE WEEKEND Friday morning, I wrote a new song with my friend Rick Lang , who was in town for a week’s worth of songwriting. Rick lives out in New Hampshire, but drives to Nashville at least once a month to write. He always brings great song ideas with him, and we wrote one of those Friday morning.  His “Blue Collar Gospel” album, “Songs of Rick Lang” has done very well for Billy Blue Records. I was blessed to be a writer on the title track that was recorded by our friend Jerry Salley with the Oak Ridge Boys .     And he’s working towards another full album project that will be kind of un...

Illinois Today...Some Nominations...Bluebird Tickets On Sale

BILL BLOG Wednesday June 18, 2025   Good morning from Heyworth, Illinois. We have a 74 degree high on tap here today with some rain mixed with the sun.   YESTERDAY Myself and 4 other Nashville songwriters made the trip from Nashville up to Heyworth for our Freedom Sings USA retreat here where today we will write some veteran stories into songs.   You know you’re in central Illinois when you roll past these bad boys.   This is our second trip to Heyworth, which is just 10 minutes away from Bloomington, Illinois. The event is held at the local American Legion Hall, where they treated me, Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean & Bill DiLuigi to a great dinner. And then the 4 of us played music for those gathered before we came back to the hotel to rest up for today.  Small town, great folks who are proud of their town, and patriotic.   LUCKY One of the founders of Freedom Sings USA is Don Goodman , who is also a hit writ...
