Tuesday morning is on us. 76 will be the high in Nashville today.
YESTERDAY
My writing session was with Stuie French of the French Family Band and young Alex Miller. Both are gifted guitar players so it was a pleasure to sit in the room with the two of them and hear them play a new “jazzy” kind of song the three of us wrote. We finished this idea that Alex brought with him pretty quickly and then just sat around and talked about favorite old songs that the two of them would then play.
Alex is only in is his early 20’s but knows EVERY old country song you can think of. We sat around and sang a couple of Bob Wills songs and Haggard songs, and George Jones songs.
I swear Alex reminds me of me a little as when I was in college I was in a country band and I was listening to Haggard, and Jones and Porter Waggoner and Johnny Cash, etc. The guys on my dorm room floor were into the Beatles and Led Zeppelin and the rock bands of the day. Only later did I come to appreciate the genius of the Beatles, Dylan and others who rock and rolled.
It’s refreshing to hear someone young KNOW songs like that. It was Alex’s grandad who got him hooked on those old country songs growing up in Kentucky. Alex recorded and co-wrote this song “My Daddy’s Dad,” that talks about that. And he sang that song when he was invited to sing at the Grand Ole Opry last year.
I added a new song to my catalog yesterday, and I got a free concert. That’s a pretty good Monday in Nashville now.
SONG OF THE DAY
Today’s song is “The Devil Don’t Honk His Horn,” which was co-written with and recorded by a Chicago native named Jacky Dustin. This one was also written with my buddy Brady Seals. It’s a “hands in the air” rockin’ gospel kind of vibe that Jacky sang the heck out of. Brady and I both wound up singing background vocals on this record, which was a cool. Click on the link to hear a bit of this song when it was played one morning on WSM Radio here in Nashville.
HEALTH NOTES
Research is saying potassium may be better for lowering your blood pressure than reducing salt intake.
Stem cell therapy for Parkinson’s is showing promising signs for relieving symptoms.
Walgreens is to pay up to $350 million for filing illegal opioid prescriptions, according to the Justice Department.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
I’m not sure if I should drive through the gate or not.
FLYING
A Delta flight had to be evacuated in Orlando yesterday after an engine caught fire before it took off. 300 passengers went down the evacuation slides. Just another plane incident to add to the growing list.
Riding in driverless cars is starting to sound like a safer means of transportation.
BEST AIRLINES
Wallet Hub just released its list of “Best Airlines” to fly in the US.
5 Southwest
4 JetBlue
3 Delta
2 Skywest
And believe it or not…Spirit Airlines was listed as #1 and was also deemed to be the safest airline to fly.
ON MARRIAGE
The late and funny Phyllis Diller had this to say about marriage. “Marry a man your own age. As your beauty fades, so will his eyesight.”
EARTH DAY
That would be today. I’m afraid if my wife finds out, I’ll be out in the yard working in the earth…so please don’t tell her. And somebody I guess will be wearing this T-shirt to honor the day.
I guess.
BASEBALL
Baseball players walk up to the plate with a song of their choice playing in the stadium. They call those “walk-up” songs. 4 of the top 5 choices this year are country songs.
And the most popular choice is “White Horses” from Chris Stapleton. Just thought you should know. What would yours be?
I think I’d choose “Just A Swinging” from John Anderson.
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
Man Fries Eggs on His Bald Head. (Over easy, I think)
TODAY
I’ve got an open day, but tonight I’m headed to the world-famous Station Inn to hear the French Family Band I mentioned at the top of today’s Blog. The Band has worked up a couple of songs that Stuie French and I have written together, and they are going to perform those tonight during what is always a packed house show of theirs. Can’t wait to hear them.
Have a great Tuesday!
