Monday morning after an Easter weekend. Rain is hitting the roof right now, and we’ll hit a high of just 74 in Nashville after being in the Upper 80’s yesterday.
THE WEEKEND
On Good Friday, I wrote two songs with my friend Rick Lang, who was in Nashville to write a week’s worth of tunes. And we closed out his productive week by writing one mainstream bluegrass tune and a song about the true meaning of Easter and the sacrifice made. It felt appropriate for sure, and I love both songs…but the second one especially. Rick is an “idea” guy. He always has a title. Always has a few lines written. So by the time I see him, there’s quite a bit on paper already. And I appreciate him sharing some of his great ideas with me. Friday being no exception.
NEW SHOW
August 18 I’ll be playing two “Evening in the Round shows with Linda Davis and Lang Scott at Uncle Lenny’s in Fairview, Tennessee (Nashville area) . This is an intimate home-cooking restaurant owned by my musical friends Lynn Marie and her husband Eddie Roddick. We will play a 5 pm show and a 7 pm show that evening. Both are dinner shows.
This should be great fun. It’s a small intimate place, so if you’re thinking about coming, do book your tickets early. We’ll see you there!
SUNDAY
My wife and I took in Easter services on a gorgeous Sunday morning. The young minister, on a VIDEO screen gave a wonderful sermon on the significance of the day and the sacrifice made.
This is one of those very big churches, with a very big band with lots of singers. Must have been 20 people on that stage. The young minister is speaking to 7 or 8 different branches of the church scattered all across Nashville. The kind with several big screens hung up, so there’s no bad seat. Yep…now pews…seats.
It was so crowded on Easter that they had to golf cart us in from the satellite parking lot. My wife thought we should act like celebrities. Tempting…but no. And it’s hard to beat a church that passes out donuts and coffee when you walk in. I don’t recall that ever happening at the New Hope Baptist Church back in Missouri where I grew up.
REDS
After returning home from church I turned on the Reds game and watched them beat Baltimore 24-2 Somebody must have sent the team a new batch of those Torpedo bats. And the young Reds superstar made an ESPN highlight with this ridiculous CATCH at shortstop.
Great way to end an Easter Sunday weekend.
SONG OF THE DAY
Since I’m going to be playing at Lynn and Eddie’s new café, I think I’ll share a polka song that the two of them recorded on their last album. The song is titled “Celebrate”. Lynn and Eddie are from polka families, and their music is contagious.
Lynn called me one day and asked me to help her write the idea about celebrating a lot of different things through the years. I wrote most of it at home and then went to see her at a TV studio where she was helping to produce the Kellie Pickler TV show at the time. I sat down and played it for them, and they LOVED it. Then they recorded it, put a great fun arrangement on it, and now they sing it out a lot. I wouldn’t be surprised if she and Eddie get up on stage with us in August to sing it.
HEALTH NOTES
New research suggests that vegans may be more likely to suffer from nutritional deficiencies than their meat-eating counterparts. Scientists also found that vegans who hit their daily protein goals with plant-based sources often fall short on two essential amino acids, putting their health at risk.
A major study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that people who worked out either early or late in the morning had an 11% and 16% lower risk, respectively, of heart disease and stroke than those who don’t work out until the afternoon.
RFK Jr. declares autism in America as an ‘epidemic’ that dwarfs the deadly COVID-19 outbreak.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Priorities in life. Priorities.
NO DRIVER
Those “no driver needed” cars are here. We have a friend who was in San Francisco a few days ago, and she took a ride in one and loved it. Here’s the VIDEO she put up of that experience.
I’d get in one. But I do wonder if a self-driving car hits another self-driving car, how do they exchange insurance information?
And who is the cop going to ask, “Do you know how fast you were driving”?
HEALTHIEST
Fortune just listed the healthiest cities in the country. Here’s their Top 5.
5 Seattle
4 Bellevue, WA
3 Irving, CA
2 Cambridge, MA
And their choice for the healthiest city is Berkeley, California, located just north of San Francisco.
Nashville was nowhere on the list. I think it’s because we have a lot of biscuits and gravy here in the Volunteer State.
MOMS
So now that Easter is over, the next big event will be Mother’s Day. What to get Mom that would be different and maybe make her laugh? How about this clucking rubber chicken purse?
Or this great notepad.
And you KNOW she’d look great wearing these in her ears.
THE DATING WORLD
Research shows that activity dates give you a better chance at getting a second date. 25% more chance. So instead of having your first date at a restaurant…take a hike. Literally. I guess that falls under “the couples who sweat together stay together” thing.
TATTOO
If you’re going to get a tattoo you might want to ask your tattoo artist to use spell check.
Just saying.
COMBO
Pringles and Miller Beer got together and birthed this. Beer Can Chicken.
I wonder if they put a pull tab on top of this can. Checking.
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
Students Cook and Serve Grandparents. (I think the editor was asleep when this went to print.)
TODAY
I’m writing with Stuie French with the French Family Band and our mutual young friend Alex Miller. I’ve been writing Stuie a bit, and Alex has been writing with Stuie’s talented son Sonny, who plays guitar in the French Family Band alongside his Father. Hearing the two of them play guitars together is a musical treat.
I’m sure we’ll have fun creating something together today.
Have a great Monday!
