Professor Co-Write...Charts...TSA Warning

BILL BLOG

Tuesday December 10, 2024

It do be Tuesday. And the weather has made a turn for the warmer for a few days. Up to 56 today in Music City.

 YESTERDAY

I had a very fun writing appointment with Tim Stafford online yesterday. Tim is one of my favorite bluegrass writers and guitar pickers over in the Knoxville area and we always seem to get something good when we get together to rhyme.

Tim had a very fun title that we wrote online together and we wrote it mixing in a little truth with the smile lines that went into the new tune.

Tim teaches bluegrass music over at Eastern Tennessee State University and is an author on top of all of his other talents. And he loves history and tucking some of that into some of his songs. Here’s a great example you can out “Wall Dogs” that he wrote and recorded with our mutual co-writer friend Thomm Jutz.

Yep…great time writing with Professor Stafford yesterday.

 NEW CHART ACTION

Good to see this.

The song “God Never Made A Mountain” from Kristy Cox that I wrote with Andrea Pearson & Josh Shilling is up to #3 now on this Gospel Bluegrass Chart.

And the gospel-bluegrass song “Never Too Lost” from Troy Engle that we wrote together came in at #12 on yet another Gospel Chart. Always glad to see anything I help write getting a little attention.

SONG OF THE DAY

Here’s another fun song from Jenny TolmanI Know SomeCowboys In Texas” that we wrote with husband Dave Brainard a few years ago that wound up on one of Jenny’s great albums. The first time Jenny played in the Lone Star State she fell in love with…and the cowboys!  So she brought back that fun title to write…and we did.

HEALTH NOTES

Research suggests a fat cell’s “memory” of past obesity changes how it responds to food, and that may explain why keeping weight off is so difficult.

More research is suggesting that drinking moderate amounts of wine or beer could help fight against rheumatoid arthritis.

The CDC is warning of a new drug 100 times deadlier than fentanyl. It’s called carfentanil which is an altered version of fentanyl. Deaths from this new drug rose over 700% this past year.

HERE’S YOUR T-SHIRT?

TSA

I never thought about it before but was reminded in an article yesterday that it’s not a good idea to try and check a wrapped Christmas present at the airport. Odds are the TSA folks will have to open it…and there’s goes your Christmas wrapping.

I flew a guitar once for a show in Virginia in a hardshell case. I left it unlocked. But when I went to get it out of the case that night of the show I was playing…it was LOCKED. I had no key. And there was no way to get it open. None. The next day I spent well over $100 to get it unlocked by a local locksmith in less than ten seconds. He told me TSA will check guitar cases…and then lock it if it’s not locked. Lesson learned. I now carry a key with me whenever I fly with that case.

SPEAKING OF CHRISTMAS

Our tree is up and looking pretty danged good if I do say so.

My wife and I learned a Christmas thing this year. We both have ordered gifts for each other on the same Amazon account. The problem is…we’re not sure who’s gift it is when it arrives on our doorstep in the cardboard boxes. So far we’ve guessed correctly but one of us could be opening a gift that’s not wrapped. I’m thinking separate Prime accounts next season.

FUNNY QUOTE

This one from the late Joan Rivers who once said, “I’ve had so much plastic surgery, when I die, they will donate my body to Tupperware”.

THEM AND US

Taylor Swift’s Era Tour that just wrapped up made 2 BILLION dollars worldwide. And with that…she is doling out 200 million dollars in bonuses to her performers and her crew that went around the world with her. That’s a pretty nice Christmas gift from the boss.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Could Hair Loss Medication Be Turning Babies Into Werewolves? Now THAT is the question of year right there y’all.

TODAY

For the first time in very long while I’m going to write with Thomm Shepherd. Thomm wrote “Riding With Private Malone” for David Ball and “Redneck Yacht Club” for Craig Morgan…both big #1 songs in the day. Thomm and his wife Coley McCabe are both in the Trop Rock movement these days so he writes a lot of beach and fun drinking songs like this ONE. I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t try to chase something like that today.

 Have a great Tuesday!

A Duo Write...Wienermobile Applications...Love Tom

BILL BLOG Thursday December 19, 2024   Thursday morning has arrived and after some heavy rain here in Nashville yesterday it will cool off to a high of just 45 today.   YESTERDAY I had such a fun write with 2/3rds of the “ Three Times A Lady ” trio.   That would be Victoria Camp and a pregnant Kennedy Scott . Kennedy is due about the first of May of next year…and her baby bump is growing. She and the trio will be playing several weeks in a row at Dollywood come next March…so that will be an interesting challenge for her for sure.   And it was Kennedy who brought in a very cool idea that we wrote together after Victoria came up with an almost “swampy” kind of melody to fit under the lyrics. Got a pretty good feeling this one will be on their next album. Yep, a good day.   SONG OF THE DAY I’ve posted this song before but it seems appropriate to make it today’s song of the day after talking about the “Three Times A Lady”. ...

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

Turkey Day...Road Schedule...No Degree Jobs

BILL BLOG Friday November 29, 2024   Happy Friday! 32 degrees right now with a high in Nashville today of 43 before dipping to a cold 25 later this evening. Time to put the trap door up. YESTERDAY Anyone else still in a turkey coma after yesterday? My wife and I sat at a long Turkey table with the Scott family and some great friends. We could not have been in better company so thank you Chris & Hillary and Lang and Linda for inviting us.   We certainly missed seeing our daughter Heather again this year and her husband Casey who are stationed overseas with the Army right now. But we were surrounded by people we love.  I hope each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day as well.    SONG OF THE DAY Today I’m sharing a song I wrote with Paul Bogart about his youngest daughter Gentry . Paul lives out in Oklahoma…a real deal cowboy George Strait singing son of a gun. The two of us wrote a song for both of his sons that he recorded...
