Tuesday…New Year’s Eve and Happy Birthday to my daughter Heather!
COLD
Those weather folks are warning of a Polar Vortex coming…and no…it’s not that Christmas movie. That means the country will get very cold…colder than it’s been since 2014. That means I have a brother who retired in Florida feeling pretty good about his decision to leave Pennsylvania for the Sunshine State. 57 will be the high in Nashville today…and some of that cold weather will hit us by next weekend.
Speaking of Pennsylvania…
YESTERDAY
I was online with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania yesterday writing a new bluegrass song. Troy is a noted bluegrass artist on Pinecastle Record and I was lucky to have a couple of songs on his first album for the label including the title track “Back Home”.
I had a little idea…not much that I shared with him that he liked about “Living the Good Life” even when one doesn’t have a lot. Both of us could relate growing up the way we did so it did not take us long to finish up a new tune to go into our catalogs.
Besides being a writer, and producer, Troy plays fiddle, guitar, upright bass, mandolin, banjo and dobro. Ridiculous. It’s a pleasure creating music with him for sure and yesterday was no exception. And the proof of that came late yesterday when he sent me a recording of the new song that sounds like a record. Pretty cool.
MIZZOU
I did watch a very entertaining Music City Bowl yesterday afternoon where my home state Mizzou Tigers came from behind and beat the Iowa Hawkeyes. Great game…great outcome! After years of being a fairly bad or common program…Missouri has become a team to watch in the SEC.
TWISTERS
Last night I watched the sequel to the movie “Twister”…that being “Twisters” starring Glen Powell and Kiernan Shipka. Not brain surgery stuff…but a fun watch for sure. You could do worse if you’re looking for something to watch on the couch.
NEW DATE
It looks like I’ll be adding a new date on the calendar to play a songwriters festival out in western Colorado this summer. Final details are being worked out and I should be able to share more on that shortly. Western Colorado is not a bad place to be in early summer for sure.
TRAILERS
So my friend Brent Burns and I wrote a funny song titled “Trailer Park Sexy” many years ago that both of us recorded and we both perform the song at our shows. Somebody is a BIG fan.
Love that. Often times when Brent performs the song a group of women will get up and dance in their bright pink Trailer Park Sexy T-Shirts that Brent sells. Always a hoot.
SONG OF THE DAY
Today it’s yet ANOTHER trailer song that Brent and I wrote…”Double Wide In The Sky”. My favorite line in this song is when the guy sees the tornado coming at him and his double wide and admits:
I grabbed the hound and HALF the kids
Beer cooler full of ice
Headed up for that double-wide in the sky.
Here's a fun "live"version of Brent singing that song in New Orleans with a participating crowd a few years ago.
HEALTH NOTES
A bird flu patient had virus mutations, and that has sparked concern about human spread according to officials.
A health expert says to sleep better at night eat some oatmeal before turning in. It’s full of melatonin and magnesium.
Experts say that socially isolated adults are 30% more likely to develop dementia.
SIGN
DROP SOMETHING
Tonight at the big New Year’s Eve party in Nashville the city will drop a big guitar. It’s Music City you know. Yesterday Troy Engle up in PA told me they have a town that drops a giant baloney!
That happens in the town of Lebanon, PA.
In Mobile they drop a Moonpie. It’s a pickle in Mount Olive, NC. (Shouldn’t it be an olive?)
And in Prairie Du Chen, Wisconsin you can watch them drop a dead carp if you’d like.
That makes the ball drop in New York look so normal now doesn’t it?
TOP MOVIES OF 2024
The movies that made the most money this past year are:
5…Dune Part 2…714 million
4…Moana 2…882 million
3…Despicable Me 4…969 million
2…Deadpool & Wolverine…1.3 billion
1…Inside Out 2…1.6 billion
And somehow I’ve not seen one of these movies.
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
State Population To Double By 2024; Babies To Blame. (Ya think?)
TODAY
My wife and I will wish our daughter Heather a Happy Birthday over in Germany where she lives with her Army pilot husband Casey. Certainly one of the biggest blessings in my life. What I’d give to have her home to give her a kiss and a hug on her birthday…but we’ll have to do that virtually today on the computer.
When I played in a band many years ago you ALWAYS played New Year’s Eve night…or wanted to because the pay is double for that night. But when she was born the late night New Year’s Eve celebrations became much more quiet…and special.
Happy New Year’s Eve y’all.
