Island Song...A #1 Song...Amsterdam

BILL BLOG

Wednesday December 11, 2024

Hump Day is on us. And it will be a little cooler today with a high of 45 after being around 60 degrees the past couple of days.

YESTERDAY

I wrote a song with Thom Shepherd at my publishing company. Thom has had some big hits in his career and stays busy on the road doing shows with his wife Coley McCabe.

And a cool thing happened during our writing session. We’re sharing ideas that we might try writing when I found a title I have had in my book for a long while about the island of Belize. Thom is a Trop Rocker…singing and performing at a LOT of beach gigs…in fact he was just back from a big Parrot Head party in Mexico.

So when I gave him that title he lit up…because he’s getting ready to play on the island of Belize so it was just a song that made sense to write. It turned out great…and I can’t wait to hear the reaction from the crowds he’ll be singing this too when he goes to Belize early next year.

Fun writing day.

A NUMBER ONE SONG

I just found out this morning that the Kristy Cox song “GodNever Made A Mountain” just went to #1 on the Mountain Bluegrass Gospel Chart! Now there’s some great news to wake up to!

I wrote this song with my friends Josh Shilling and Andrea Pearson and Kristy recorded the heck out of it. Congrats to her, my co-writers…and my friend producer Jerry Salley who loved the song the minute I sent it to him and then decided to have Kristy record it. And there’s more.

The song “Country Faith” from Kristen Bearfield featuring gospel singer Karen Peck is in the #9 slot now on this same chart. This song was written with Kristen and Bob Minner. So now I’m rooting for this song to keep climbing as well!  Oh…and there’s more good news.

A NOMINATION

Yesterday found out that the SPBGMA (Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America) named the Kristy Cox album “Let It Burn” as a nominee for Bluegrass Album of the Year.

Significant because I have 3 songs on that great album including the song that just went #1… “God Never Made A Mountain”.  “Some Things Don’t Go Together”, and “How Lucky Am I” are also on this nominated album.

Proud of all three of those songs…and proud for my friend Kristy as well. Fingers crossed!

SONG OF THE DAY

I’m going to choose the song “How Lucky Am I” that’s on the Kristy Cox album as the song of the day today. This is the song I wrote with Jimmy Fortune (longtime member of the Statler Brothers and Sydni Perry the harmony and fiddle singer for Carrie Underwood.). Jimmy actually sings the beautiful harmony you hear on this song.

The song was inspired by my old band manager and second Mom to me Dean Raymer who passed a few years ago. So it has extra special meaning to me. And Winnie the Pooh had a hand in inspiring this song as well.

DECEMBER

A reminder. I have one more show…well actually 2 shows left this month. December 28 I’ll be in Livingston, Tennessee at Main and Monroe which is a great restaurant. I’ll be with the very talented Lauren Mascitti for a 4 pm and a 6:30 pm show. And dinner is part of both shows in an intimate atmosphere. Ticket details and more are in the TOUR section here on my website.

HEALTH NOTES

Authorities have reported that deadly virus samples are missing from a lab…a major biosecurity breach.

A new investigation finds that the household chemical formaldehyde causes more cancer than any other household chemical.

A study claims that eating fiber helps improve inflammation related to gum disease.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

And there’s the question of the day.

HYPERLOOPING

They’re still talking about us being able to hyperloop one day from New York to London in just 54 minutes. An Elon Musk thing I believe. To make it happen…it would cost them 20 TRILLION dollars or more.

Looks to me to be like you climb into one of those cannisters you put a check into at the bank to be deposited while you sit in the drive up.

SPEAKING OF TRAVELING

Amsterdam is overrun with nuisance tourists. That’s what they’re calling the overload of people that come to see their city. They are trying to control how many tourists will be allowed in. And one of the ways they’re doing that is by limiting the amount of cruise ships that dock there every year. The want to take it down from 199 to just 100 for now.

So I’m glad my wife and I got to dock before the new restrictions when we took a Rhine River Cruise a few years ago.

Beautiful city for sure. Do watch out for bicycles though. We were warned by the cruise director before we stepped off the ship and man was he right. I’ve never seen a city with so many bicycles. And they have the right away.

WHICH CAN IS RUDOLPH?

Somebody had a little too much time on their hands to create a sleigh full of rain-BEER.

HOTELS

I stay in a lot of hotels being on the road so much. I’m always grateful when I open a hotel room door and find it to be clean and comfortable.

The publication Greenhouse Black just listed the WORST 8 hotel chains to stay in. They are in reverse order:

Red Roof Inn

Econolodge

Rodeway Inn

America’s Best Value Inn

Extended Stay

Super 8

Days Inn

And the worst hotel chain they listed is Motel Six. Even with a light left on by ole Tom Bodet.

They did miss this one though that Linda Davis, Lang Scott and I found on a trip that took us through Arkansas.

As a rule…we try to avoid any hotel or motel that has only half a number on the sign.

HOW MUCH WOULD IT TAKE?

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were married…and then have been through a pretty nasty divorce. There have not been a lot of nice things said from either party. BUT…a producer is offering the two of them 60 MILLION dollars if they will do a film together that he’s producing. So the question is…how much money would it take to get you to act with someone you really don’t like?

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Kentucky Man Arrested Twice In 3 Days After Leading Police On Low Speed Mule Chase. (Geez…what kind of jackass would do such a thing?)

TODAY

I’m off to write with my longtime pal Steve Dean who just celebrated a birthday this week along with Mutt Cooper who’s from Georgia who writes with our Freedom Sings USA organization every now and then…a veteran himself. Mutt has a fun idea song he presented to me and Steve…so today we’re going to try to make that idea come to life.

Have a great Wednesday!

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

Trio of Writers...Post CMA...Alligator Bread

BILL BLOG Friday November 22, 2024   Friday…the weekend be here! Little chillier going into the weekend with a high of just 49 today and the low tonight will dip down to 37.   YESTERDAY I rhymed with two friends yesterday Rick Lang and Kristy Cox . Though I have written with both many times, and each of them have recorded songs I’ve written with them, it was the first time the three of us sat down together. And yesterday we wrote a gospel song idea that Rick brought with him…pretty much an entire chorus.      I was able to share with Rick that I heard one of our songs “ Church Bells A Ringin ” that’s on the Blue Collar Gospel Album-Songs of Rick Lang on Sirius-XM on the way to our appointment sung by Danny Paisley and a group of great harmony singers. That was pretty cool.     And we got to celebrate with Kristy for her album “Let It Burn” that’s up for a couple of big Golden Guitar Awards this year including Best Albu...

A Duo Write...Wienermobile Applications...Love Tom

BILL BLOG Thursday December 19, 2024   Thursday morning has arrived and after some heavy rain here in Nashville yesterday it will cool off to a high of just 45 today.   YESTERDAY I had such a fun write with 2/3rds of the “ Three Times A Lady ” trio.   That would be Victoria Camp and a pregnant Kennedy Scott . Kennedy is due about the first of May of next year…and her baby bump is growing. She and the trio will be playing several weeks in a row at Dollywood come next March…so that will be an interesting challenge for her for sure.   And it was Kennedy who brought in a very cool idea that we wrote together after Victoria came up with an almost “swampy” kind of melody to fit under the lyrics. Got a pretty good feeling this one will be on their next album. Yep, a good day.   SONG OF THE DAY I’ve posted this song before but it seems appropriate to make it today’s song of the day after talking about the “Three Times A Lady”. ...
