Gulf Shores Bound...Dirt Roads...Droning On

BILL BLOG

Thursday November 7, 2024

Thursday morning and I’m packed and good to go to Gulf Shores this morning for the Frank Brown Songwriters Festival.

YESTERDAY

It was a pretty lazy day around the Whyte House so it was mostly about getting my ducks in a row for the trip this morning down to the beach. This is the 40th Anniversary of this great festival…and I’m pretty sure I’ve now done 30 or more of them.

Always a pleasure to go down to the beach, play songs, and see some old friends made through the years down there. 5 shows this year starting with two shows tomorrow. Here’s a LINK with all the details on those shows.

EYES ON

Yesterday I had one eye on Rafael and the other eye on the Dow Jones.  The stock market closed at a record high up over 1,500 point in one day…post-election day. And that tropical storm went pretty quickly into Cat 3 territory for a hurricane. Fortunately…if it comes ashore…it looks like Gulf Shores will not be affected and we’ll get this year’s songwriters festival in.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today’s song is “Dirt Road” recorded by Kristy Cox, written with Kristy and her producer Jerry Salley. “Let’s build a house down a dirt road” was a line I had that I shared that day and since all of us grew up where there were dirt roads to drive on…we were all three able to draw from our experiences of living that simpler kind of life.

In fact, my Dad taught me to drive on…not a “Dirt Road” but an old gravel and dirt road. In his truck…almost 16 years old. Stick on the column. Check out the song.

HEALTH NOTES

A study notes that being extra sleepy during the day means a higher chance of developing a pre-dementia syndrome.

Yet another interesting study claims that liberals are a third as likely to describe themselves as ‘highly masculine’ than conservatives.

One more study reveals that those treated with “bright light” therapy show a 40% remission rate of depression. Pretty sure cases increase when it starts getting dark at 4:30 pm!

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Wonder how the homeowner really feels?

That sign makes me think about this funny song my friend Brent Burns recorded that we wrote "Get Off Of My Beach" from the viewpoint of an angry old white man being upset about teenage kids invading his favorite piece of sand during Spring Break. And yea...we laughed pretty hard during this recording session.

FAST AIRPLANE

They tested the “Son of Concorde” yesterday and speed wise it hit close to Mach 1. That means one could fly from New York to London in just three & a half hours on that bad boy. The world’s becoming a smaller and smaller place. No word yet as to when anyone can book a ticket on it.

THINGS YOU DON’T SEE EVERY DAY

Yep…that’s a raccoon falling from a ceiling at LaGuardia airport. I have no idea if that was some passengers “emotional support” trash panda or not.  Still checking.

POST ELECTION

New York liquor store owners say that they had a huge sales day on election day and night. And one of the things they noticed was that some customers bought two bottle. One bottle of sparkling wine…one bottle of liquor. So they were set to drink whatever was appropriate depending upon how who they voted for finished. In this election of course that means more sparkling wine was consumed.

And one huge Crypto better laid down 30 million that Trump would win. He pocketed 46 million. He too must have been drinking sparkling wine.

DUCK DRONE

Check out this new-fangled kind of drone. Some tech folks in New Mexico have developed a “duck drone”.

Just what it looks like. A drone made to look like a duck. The intent is to fly it to monitor wildlife without sticking out. I have GOT to get me a drone!

I want a mini-drone that I can fly through my home to help me find my lost phone or car keys.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Ambulance Hits Oregon Cyclist And Then Charges Him $2,000 For A Ride To The Hospital. (Yes…the biker has filed a lawsuit)

TODAY

It’s I-65 South this morning down to Gulf Shores with my friends Steve Dean and Bill DiLuigi where we’ll check into a beach condo and settle in for the shows that start tomorrow at the Festival. So tomorrow’s blog?  Coming at ya looking at the sand and the Gulf of Mexico.

Have a great Wednesday!

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

A Duo Write...Wienermobile Applications...Love Tom

BILL BLOG Thursday December 19, 2024   Thursday morning has arrived and after some heavy rain here in Nashville yesterday it will cool off to a high of just 45 today.   YESTERDAY I had such a fun write with 2/3rds of the “ Three Times A Lady ” trio.   That would be Victoria Camp and a pregnant Kennedy Scott . Kennedy is due about the first of May of next year…and her baby bump is growing. She and the trio will be playing several weeks in a row at Dollywood come next March…so that will be an interesting challenge for her for sure.   And it was Kennedy who brought in a very cool idea that we wrote together after Victoria came up with an almost “swampy” kind of melody to fit under the lyrics. Got a pretty good feeling this one will be on their next album. Yep, a good day.   SONG OF THE DAY I’ve posted this song before but it seems appropriate to make it today’s song of the day after talking about the “Three Times A Lady”. ...

Quiet New Year...Ray Stevens...A Look Back

BILL BLOG January 1, 2025   Wednesday…bring with it the very first day of a New Year. Time flies don’t it?   YESTERDAY A lazy New Year’s Eve day around the Whyte House. My wife and I called our daughter Heather over in Germany to wish her a Happy Birthday…yep a New Year’s Eve kid. She and her husband Casey were in a theme park in the Netherlands called “Efteling” to celebrate the occasion. The two of them took us there when we were over in Germany last year so in our minds at least…we could picture where they were at. More on the Germany trip at the end of today’s Blog in the “Looking Back” section.   TWEAKING I also spent a little time on the phone with producer-writer-singer Jerry Salley who is recording a song I helped write with my friend Andrea Pearson tweaking some lyrics of that song that young-talented bluegrass artist Caroline Owens is getting ready to record on her next album. Heck of an up-tempo tune and we wanted to make s...
