Wednesday morning and I’m on the road to Gulf Shores for the big Parrot Head gathering that is called MOTM…”Meeting of the Minds”. It’s going to be in the 80’s with sunshine on the beach.
YESTERDAY
I had the day open and the big moment of the day what’s having a new hot water heater installed. How’s that for exciting?!
I did sit down and write a new song for my publishing company…solo…and that left plenty of time for packing the guitar and a suitcase for the trip I’m on now down to Gulf Shores.
SONG OF THE DAY
My friend Brady Seals put together this great lyric video of our song “Catch 22”. We wrote this together several years ago about remembering what life was like when we were young and how we’d feel and what we might do if we could “catch” that age again. In Brady’s case…he was a member of the hit group Little Texas…had really long hair and was truly a rock star. There are several great pictures of my friend from those days of youth. Love this song…check it out by hitting the link above.
BLUE COLLAR GOSPEL
The Bluegrass Unlimited Top 30 Chart came out this week and “Blue Collar Gospel” the song I wrote with Jerry Salley and Rick Lang slotted in the #9 spot. Recorded by Jerry Salley and The Oak Ridge Boys (featuring the late Joe Bonsall of the Oaks) has pretty much been on a chart since the day it was released…and that’s been a couple of months or more. To say the song has been a blessing would be an understatement. And the great thing about his particular chart is that almost all the songs are commercial bluegrass songs…while “Blue Collar” is a gospel-grass song. I’m
AND…
The song “Country Faith” by Kristen Leigh Bearfield that features the great gospel singer Karen Peck that I wrote with Kristen and Bob Minner is at #7 this week…its first week out on the Mountain Bluegrass Gospel Chart.
Can’t wait to see how high this song might go on the charts.
HEALTH NOTES
Hopeful news. Trial results are showing a new cervical cancer treatment approach could reduce risk by 40%.
Green onions have been recalled in over 11 states over salmonella concerns.
And thousands of bottle of common antidepressant have been recalled by the FDA over a cancer-causing chemical.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Well, I appreciate the honesty.
HUG EM’ QUICK
A New Zealand airport has put a time limit on goodbye hugs in the drop-off zone. 3 minutes. Time to board. I’m not sure I’ve ever hugged anyone 3 minutes.
That will be an interesting moment the first time security has to break up people hugging goodbye.
CHEESEBURGER IN PARADISE
The online publication Stacker listed their top 20 hamburgers. Here’s their top 10.
10…Steak N Shake (high on my list)
9…White Castle (nope…too many onions…never had one)
8…Hardees
7…In-N-Out Burger (the first one is getting ready to open in Nashville soon)
6…Red Robin
5…McDonald’s
4…5 Guys (another fave of mine)
3...Sonic
2…Burger King
And their #1 burger?
That would be Wendy’s.
WORLD SERIES EXPENSIVE
Game 1 of the World Series will be in LA this Friday. Yanks vs Dodgers. And to get a ticket and a parking spot? EXPENSIVE
Lowest reported ticket price right now is $1,269 and parking in the lot closest to Dodger Stadium is $6,000! Yikes. My couch is free.
DOH!
Get this. A Dad in Wisconsin had been drinking…a lot apparently. Because he bought 14 tickets for an Alabama football game. Turns out he bought 14 tickets to see Alabama the band in concert.
WHITE LIGHTNING!
And I love this. George Jones once drove to a liquor store on his lawn mower because his wife at the time Tammy Wynette had taken his car keys away and left. So George hopped on his mower and down the road he went.
In Kentucky a few days ago a neighborhood held a “Possum Party” complete with a George Jones Lawn Mower parade. George is gone…but not forgotten.
ONE MORE LIST
An MSN article listed the country songs that have been “covered” the most through history. That means songs that have been recorded by many other artists after the original hit. There’s a lot of Hank Williams songs in their top 25.
This is the Top 5 most covered country songs.
“Crazy” by Patsy Cline has been covered some 372 times.
“Help Me Make It Through The Night written by Kris Kristofferson has been covered 403 nights. My favorite version of that song was from Sammi Smith.
“Frosty The Snowman” originally recorded by Gene Autry has been covered some 436 times. I’ll take Burl Ives version.
“You
Are My Sunshine” written by Jimmie Davis the late governor of the state of
Louisiana has been recorded by 439 other artists…including this GREAT VERSION
by Ray Charles.
And the most covered country song of all time is the Tennessee Waltz originally recorded by Cowboy Copas and it’s been recorded now by 458 other artist. And it’s one of the official songs of the state of Tennessee.

Cleared. (And the world can sleep calmly now knowing he cracked his nuts
legally.)
TODAY
I’ll be on stage tonight at the Hangout in Gulf Shores for the big Trop Rock Awards Show passing out a couple of trophies. One for radio station of the year, the second for Best Duo or Groups. It’s great to be at an awards show where the artists and presenters are wearing shorts and flip flops.
Have a great Wednesday!
