A Christmas Song...Jukebox On A Beach...Road Ahead

BILL BLOG

Tuesday October 15, 2024

Hello Tuesday morning. It’s just 44 degrees as I start the blog here this morning. Today’s high in Nashville will be 56 and the low tonight dips down to 37! I’m not ready to see frost on any pumpkins.

Meanwhile out in the Atlantic a new tropical system is forming. Nobody on the coast is ready for any more of any of that kind of stuff either.

YESTERDAY

I got into the Christmas spirit a little early writing a new Christmas song with Shantell Ogden and Victoria Venier. Shantell has a backer and is producing a little Christmas movie about Nashville songwriters and Christmas season in Nashville. Think Hallmark kind of vibe…guy…girl…they’re together…they’re apart…they make up in time to kiss under the mistletoe…you know the story. Okay I made that up…but it might be close.

So this could be the theme song…we’ll see. And I thought yesterday she was bringing a camera guy to film a little part she wanted me to play as a songwriter…but I had the date wrong and I’ll be out of town for when they are filming that part. So I THINK she’s getting Kevin Costner to take my place.

Either way the song turned out great so we’ll see what happens with it maybe come next Christmas season.

SPEAKING OF CHRISTMAS

Randy Brooks name came up in our writing session. Randy wrote “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” and he actually showed up at a show of mine with Linda Davis and Lang Scott a couple of weekends ago in Corsicana, Texas and surprised our audience when he got up and surprised them by singing that song. I’ve known Randy for several years…funny witty man.

But I did NOT know until Shantell told me that he also wrote this Christmas tune titled “It’s Halloween…A Christmas Song”. Don’t know how I’ve missed this one. So she sent it to me…and I clicked on and laughed. There’s a lot of truth in this song about how we start celebrating Christmas way too soon…like starting before Halloween. Click on and listen…you’ll get a Christmas chuckle as well I bet.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today I’m choosing another song written with Brent BurnsMy Jukebox at the Beach”. We wrote this one from an idea I pondered with Brent one day about if we had a Wurlitzer jukebox and lived on the beach, and LOVES everything beach, what kind of beach songs would be on that jukebox? You’ll hear some of your favorites I’m sure in the beach tune. I went on to be the title track for one of Brent’s albums, and a few years ago down in Key West it won the Trop Rock Album of the Year.

HEALTH NOTES

Children and teenagers who have contracted COVID are more prone to Type 2 diabetes according to a study.

Some experts are saying that those routine dental X-Rays they take is not backed by evidence that we need them nearly that often.

Weight Watchers has now launched a lower cost alternative to Ozempic. $129 a month for theirs. (I’m waiting until the Dollar General Store offers up theirs before I jump in on the craze)

HERES YOUR SIGN

I don’t think I really want to know.

GET RID OF

Go Banking put out a list of things that they save one needs to get rid of to help save money. Old appliances (draining energy) over-sized homes, rarely used vehicles, and timeshares were some of the things mentioned. They also suggest getting rid of gym equipment we never use. That’s where I draw the line. I just can’t seem to part with this.

I’D FILE THIS ONE UNDER “IRONIC”

ROBOT MASSAGE

Or…how about AI being used so that we can dial in a massage from a robot? Some are already available in New York hotels and massage studios. You lay face down, choose your soothing music, and dial in how much pressure you want the robot to use on your sore joints and back and wherever.

I’m going to choose “Rub It In” as my massage music.

HUSBANDS AND WIVES JOKE

“My wife left a note on the fridge. It said, “It’s not working. I can’t take it anymore…I’m going to my Mom’s.”

I opened the fridge door, the light came on, and the beer was cold.

“What the hell did she mean?”

Freedom Sings USA Event...A Gold Star Mom...An Old Friend Surprise

BILL BLOG Monday September 9, 2024 Monday morning and I’m back home in Nashville from Marion, Illinois. Sunshine and a high of 84 today here in Music City.       THE WEEKEND Thursday I made the three hour trip up to Marion, Illinois for our Freedom Sings USA songwriter retreat with songwriters Bobby Tomberlin , Steve Dean , Irene Kelley, and Don Goodman.   Marion is in southern Illinois…beautiful town and the folks who organized the event were so kind and passionate about honoring their veterans. Friday night they had a “meet and greet” in a beautiful old church where we had a great dinner and then played a show for all of those who attended. The Mayor, the organizers and the veterans.   Each songwriter met the veteran they were going to write with that night. This is mine. His name is Art Fager .   More on Art in a second.   FRIDAY Friday morning we gathered in yet another church for early breakfast and then each songwriter sat down wit

Beach Rhymes...Football Kickoff...Freedom Sings USA Trip

BILL BLOG Thursday September 5, 2024   Thursday arises and I have a day of traveling to Marion, Illinois. More on that at the end of today’s Blog. Back up to 90 with sun today.   YESTERDAY I wrote with Darrell Clanton yesterday for the first time. Darrell lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife and back in the day he was an artist here in Nashville and had a couple of country songs on the charts, and had several folks record his songs.     These days Darrell and his band “Bad Habit” are very active in the Trop Rock genre playing a lot of beach music and beach shows. A couple of years ago Darrell and I played the Jim Parker Songwriter Show in Huntsville, Alabama along with my buddy Brent Burns . And then Darrell and I just played it again a few months ago. Then yesterday I really got to know him and we did write a beach song for him.   We’ll be writing more for sure in the future. And there’s a chance that sometime next year that we’ll do a cruise toget

Funny Song...Music Luncheon...Gladiator

BILL BLOG Friday July 26, 2024   Friday morning…rolling into a late July weekend. 82 for the high in Twang Town today with a little rain in the mix.   YESTERDAY I had a very full Wednesday that started with writing a new funny song with young Ethan Phillips who walked into the writing room and said something in conversation that led us to writing what he said about women being compared to a volcano. We may have had WAY too much fun writing that thought. And it could very well turn out to be a song I put on my set list from time to time when I’m out performing.   LUNCH We finished up in time for me to run down south of Nashville to have lunch with my friends Linda Davis & Lang Scott and our mutual friends Richard & Donna Lynch who run a wonderful venue in Waynesville, Ohio, just north of Cincinnati called the “Keep It Country Farm”.   Linda, Lang and myself did a show for them last year and had the best time. They turned part of their f
