Here comes the first “Hump Day” in September. 85 with sun today in Nashville. The weather is a little cooler all of a sudden. But in Phoenix they’ve had 100 days this year of 100 degree heat. Yikes.
YESTERDAY
I hooked up online with Troy Engle in Pennsylvania and wrote a danged “sad” country song. They still record those…so I hear. And this one certainly went down heartbreak road on us.
I’ve mentioned it before Troy is one of those guys who plays every instrument (well) sings, produces, records bluegrass records and more. He’s played behind some of your favorite stars for years out on the road. These days he’s mostly doing what he does from his home in PA and doing it so well.
His current album that has some co-writes of ours on it including the title track of “Back Home” has been showing up on the bluegrass charts now for almost 10 weeks…a good thing. Fun day creating something new with Troy.
MO-MO
I was contacted yesterday by the Missouri Department of Conservation and Jill Pritchard who hosts a podcast titled Nature Boost Podcast. She was asking for permission to use my song “Mo-Mo The Missouri Monster” on one of her upcoming podcast shows. So I sent her an mp3 of the song and it will be used on her podcast soon. I’ll let you know when.
MO-MO was the first record I ever recorded…and the story and the song just keeps living on. I’ve blogged about it many time before, but for those that don’t know…here’s an ARTICLE about the 50th Anniversary of the song that I played at in Louisiana, Missouri a couple of years ago to a packed house…complete with Mo-Mo running around and scaring people once again…sort of.
SOUNDS BASEBALL
Minor League baseball’s season comes to an end this month. Already? So I made sure I got to see at least one more game before the boys of summer go home in the minors. And last night the stadium went to the dogs.
Yep…bring a “barker” to the ballyard. Man, what a perfect evening it was too.
The temperatures cooled off which made it very comfortable watching our Sounds, the AAA affiliate of the Brewers win big last night. Always fun at the old ballpark.
PICK OF THE DAY
Today I’m going to choose the song “Front Porch Philosophy” that was the title track on one of Jerry Salley’s albums that we wrote together. The song happened by accident as we were writing on an idea that day on Music Row and the song was not really going anywhere. During a break Jerry and I started talking about wise things parents and grandparents might say. And at one point I said to Jerry, “Good ole front porch philosophy”…and Jerry stopped and said, “Now there’s our song”!
So we ditched what we were working on (and it was never revisited) and wrote “Front Porch Philosophy”. Glad we did.
HEALTH NOTES
A leading nutrition expert claims that just 4 minutes of rigorous activity a day will greatly reduce the risk of getting cancer.
In China a study concludes that cell phone use can increase the risk of heart disease especially for smokers and diabetics.
And yet one more study agrees that some of those weight loss medicines could reduce the risk of COVID.
SPEAKING OF HEALTH
This from Cindy Adams column this morning in the New York Post.
A would be patient was given an appointment 3 months off. The patient says, “I may be dead by then.” The nurse replies, “No problem. You can always cancel the appointment.”
NOT THE PICTURE OF HEALTH
That would be golfer John Daly. And he’d be the first to tell you that. But he is danged funny and can hit a golf ball a mile. Check out what he said to ESPN sports host Pat McAfee here. Tells you a lot about his sense of humor.
AND SPEAKING OF GOLF
Scottie
Scheffler is one of the leading golfers on the pro tour. He made a LOT of money
last year. How much? His caddie made 5 million! And now I'm trying to figure out if my back is strong enough to carry a bag.
ITALY
The Trevi Fountain in Rome is beautiful and a tourist hot spot. My wife and I got this picture of it when we toured Italy a few years ago.
This is the fountain where tourists toss a coin with their right hand over their left shoulder into the water and the promise is that it insures that you will one day return to Rome. A LOT of tourists toss coins. Last year they pulled out over 1.5 million dollars! And they put it to good use as it goes to a Catholic charity there that helps fun food banks and welfare projects. Yep. We made our contribution as well.
POLITICAL FUNNY
This quote from Alben Barkely who was our 35th Vice President serving under President Harry Truman. Alben once said, “One son went to sea; the other became Vice President; and neither one was heard from again.”
HOW
THIS FOR A SHOCKER
A husband thought his wife had cheated on him and was granted a DNA test. Turns
out that the child they had was switched at birth at the hospital and the baby
belonged to neither of them. Wowser.
MANNING
CAST
NFL FOOTBALL is on the way this week and so is the Manning Cast that’s carried
on ESPN 2 featuring Peyton and Eli. I watch their coverage of the Monday Night Football
game over the regular broadcast. Funny, really funny at times, informative and
they have great special guest that sit in with them.
How funny? Check out this new TRAILER promoting this year’s Manning Cast.
HEADLINE OF THE DAY
Dad 40 Sleeps 30 Minutes Each Day For The Last 12 Years To Double His Life Expectancy. I guess if you never sleep…one does add hours to their lives. Heck, I got sleepy just reading this story.
TODAY
I’m writing for the first time with Darrell Clanton who these days lives in Florida and is singing and recording Trop Rock Music. But back when Darrell was in Nashville he had some luck. Even had a couple of songs of his get pretty high on the charts like this one Lonesome 7-7203. He recorded for Warner Brothers at one time and has been on the Grand Ole Opry stage more than once. The two of us played a show for the Jim Parker Songwriters Series in Huntsville, Alabama a couple of months ago alongside songwriters Irene Kelley and host Jim Parker. After the show that evening he asked if we might write together sometime. And today we’re going to do just that.
Have a great Wednesday!
