Bluegrass Rhymings...Last Night's Interview...Movie Scenes

BILL BLOG

Thursday September 19, 2024

And a happy Thursday morning to you.

YESTERDAY

I wrote on an idea that my friend Irene Kelley brought to my publishing company on Wednesday…and Irene always has good ideas. I had one too…hers was better so we wrote that thought into a new tune.

Years ago now I was at the Station Inn here in Nashville to hear my friends Darin and Brooke Aldridge. During their show that night they asked Irene Kelley to get up and sing. And I loved her voice. Even though she’s from Pennsylvania…Latrobe to be exact…home of Arnold Palmer and Mr. Rogers…her voice sounds Appalachian. So to make a long story short, I sent her an e-mail a few days later asking her if she’d consider writing with met? She made the mistake of saying “yes” and that has led to lot of co-writes. Three of those she’s recorded on her albums including this one “Faster Than Angels Can Fly”.

And yet another song the two of us wrote with another friend “Lovers Moon” was recorded by Jeannie Kendall who was one half of the Father-Daughter team “The Kendall’s” who had hits like “Heaven’s Just A Sin Away”. And Jeannie and her late Dad Royce Kendall produced an early album on me at Dolly & Porter’s old recording studio here in Music City. Small world sometimes isn’t it?

BRADY’S SHOW

Last evening I was “live” on my friend Brady Seals new You Tube Channel. I was his first guest and it was a little odd as usually I’d be the one interviewing him. All those years on the radio I interviewed my Cincinnati native friend many times. When he was with Little Texas, when he was a founding member of “Hot Apple Pie”…as a solo artist and on and on. So it was ironic that last night he was the one asking me questions.

We talked about radio days, stand up comedy and writing comedy, writing country and bluegrass songs, the state of the music business today and yesterday AND baseball…as Brady is a baseball fan like me. Really fun interview. And we talked about songs we wrote together like the new single Brady has out “Southernism” that we co-wrote with another friend Josh Shilling.

The first time I met Brady…he snuck into a club where I was hosting a talent night for WUBE Radio in Cincinnati. He may have been underage. But he sat behind a piano and was great. And he won. Now all these years later he’s had a stellar music career and we’ve become great friends and co-writers. Full circle for sure.

We talked for over an hour last night “live”. As it was the FIRST broadcast for him on You Tube…we had small “echo” problem but got it straightened out.

Check out our interview if you’d like…right HERE.

SONG OF THE DAY

Today I’m going to choose a song I wrote with Wood Newton. Wood has written some huge hits like “Bobby Sue” for The Oak Ridge Boys, and “Riding With Private Malone” for David Ball just to name two on his long list of hits.

We were having lunch one day and I showed him a song title idea I had that was written on a piece of paper. It read, “If You’re Not Careful, My Wife’s Gonna LeaveYou.” He laughed and said, “Don’t show that to anyone else, we’re writing that as soon as possible. And sure enough, the next week we wrote it. It’s on one of my comedy song CD’s, and Wood also put it on one of his CD’s and he performs it “live” everywhere he goes to big laughs…always.

Check it out and see if you don’t laugh as well.

SURVIVOR

The 47th season of Survivor started last night on CBS. Guilty admission. I’ve not missed a one. Got hooked the first season…still hooked. Just thought I’d share. And I know. I need to get a life.

HEALTH NOTES

According to a study published in the Journal JAMA Network, taking Ozempic often results in losing muscle mass and can lead to brittle bones…especially for those age 65 or older.

NBC News reports that the U.S. ranks last in health care compared with nine other high-income countries.

Good news. US overdoses have fallen sharply in recent months.

FUNNY BUMPER STICKER

NEW TREND

Designer dorms are in right now. Kids going to college are spending thousands of dollars…or their parents are spending thousands of dollars to spiff up those rooms.

Looks nothing like the cinder block walls and narrow bed I had my freshman year at Central Missouri State University. I shared a dorm room with a High School friend. Two small beds, one desk, one small bathroom. Down the hall was a gathering place with a TV. I remember watching the moon landing on that black and white TV and hearing Neil Armstrong say, “That’s one small step for man….”

I know this. If I had asked my Dad for money to upscale my little dormitory room he would have given me a quick response…and he might have laughed.

MOVIES

A film magazine listed their top movie scenes of all time. Take a look here at their top 5 choices.

5…Citizen Kane launching the perfect mystery with a word. That word from actor Orson Welles was “Rosebud”.

4…Wizard of Oz…Follow The Yellow Brick Road

3…Godfather…Don Corleone makes an offer you can’t refuse.

2…Psycho…when Norman Bates kills Marion in that shower scene.

And their number 1 movie moment?

Casablanca when Rick and Isla say goodbye.

And yes, we’d all choose different scenes I’m sure. In my personal top 5 for sure would be “Field of Dreams” when Kevin Costner’s character asks, “Wanna have a catch Dad”?

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

Again, from the very funny folks at Babylon Bee.

Cracker Jack Changes Name To More Politically Correct Caucasian Jack”.

TODAY
I’m writing with Steve Dean and my Aussie friend Angus Gill who is now living full time here in the US. The first time for the three of us to co-write. Should be a very fun hang today.

Have a great Thursday!

A Bluebird Show...New Album In The Mail...An Interview With An Old Friend

BILL BLOG Tuesday November 26, 2024   Tuesday morning…couple days away from carving the turkey. 50 for the high today here in Music City…bracing for some cold weather on the way.   YESTERDAY I had nothing musical on the calendar yesterday…but had one of those “had to do” things that took up a chunk of my day. Sometimes you can’t control a calendar…the calendar controls you and give you no choice. But there was some good news that came rolling in.   NEW SHOW On Tuesday January 28 I’ll be hosting a songwriter round at the world famous Bluebird Café. And the great part about this news is that I’m going to be able to add my longtime friend Brent Burns to this show…something that’s been a bucket list item for him.   And I’m so glad that I’m the one who will get to make this happen for him. EVERY songwriter wants to play the Bluebird. And somehow, even though my friend lived in Nashville and wrote very seriously for a long while, he ne...

Trio of Writers...Post CMA...Alligator Bread

BILL BLOG Friday November 22, 2024   Friday…the weekend be here! Little chillier going into the weekend with a high of just 49 today and the low tonight will dip down to 37.   YESTERDAY I rhymed with two friends yesterday Rick Lang and Kristy Cox . Though I have written with both many times, and each of them have recorded songs I’ve written with them, it was the first time the three of us sat down together. And yesterday we wrote a gospel song idea that Rick brought with him…pretty much an entire chorus.      I was able to share with Rick that I heard one of our songs “ Church Bells A Ringin ” that’s on the Blue Collar Gospel Album-Songs of Rick Lang on Sirius-XM on the way to our appointment sung by Danny Paisley and a group of great harmony singers. That was pretty cool.     And we got to celebrate with Kristy for her album “Let It Burn” that’s up for a couple of big Golden Guitar Awards this year including Best Albu...

Turkey Day...Road Schedule...No Degree Jobs

BILL BLOG Friday November 29, 2024   Happy Friday! 32 degrees right now with a high in Nashville today of 43 before dipping to a cold 25 later this evening. Time to put the trap door up. YESTERDAY Anyone else still in a turkey coma after yesterday? My wife and I sat at a long Turkey table with the Scott family and some great friends. We could not have been in better company so thank you Chris & Hillary and Lang and Linda for inviting us.   We certainly missed seeing our daughter Heather again this year and her husband Casey who are stationed overseas with the Army right now. But we were surrounded by people we love.  I hope each of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day as well.    SONG OF THE DAY Today I’m sharing a song I wrote with Paul Bogart about his youngest daughter Gentry . Paul lives out in Oklahoma…a real deal cowboy George Strait singing son of a gun. The two of us wrote a song for both of his sons that he recorded...
