Back Home...Durham Bound This Weekend...A Book Fair

BILL BLOG

June 1, 2026

Monday morning, back home in Nashville. And it’s the 1st of June.

82 for the high today with a slight chance of bad weather.

THE WEEKEND

Friday morning, our group of 5 songwriters got up for breakfast at a place that was recommended near our hotel in Elmhurst, Illinois where we were staying for Freedoms Sings USA retreat. And what a great recommendation it was. If you’re ever in Chicago, check out one of these places.

Then it was off to O’Hare with 5 guitars, and some downtime waiting on our Southwest Flight home.

We certainly had a great time writing with veterans up in Elmhurst, Illinois, and playing for those folks.

NEXT

I’ll be back on a plane this Friday for a two-day Freedom Sings USA retreat in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina—our first trip to that city to write with veterans.

NEW TRIP

I just found out that our Freedom Sings USA group will be returning to Greensburg, Indiana, for a second time. We will be there on February 12 & 13, 2027.

Last year’s event had one of the largest crowds we’ve ever played for.

I wrote with Tom Sullivan, a Vietnam combat pilot who flew a ton of missions.

I’m very much looking forward to returning to Greensburg, where a tree grows out of the courthouse roof.

OTHER NEW SHOWS

These three shows have been confirmed for our “Evening in the Round” show starring Linda Davis, with Lang Scott and me.

Friday, September 4, we will play at the Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center in Midland, Texas. 7:30 pm start.

The night before, we’re at another gorgeous theater in Alto, New Mexico, the Spencer Theatre.

And then Saturday night, November 7, we play the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center in Lenoir, North Carolina.

Details for all these shows and others are available in the tour section here on my website.

SATURDAY

My wife Kathy and I got up early Saturday and headed for the Tennessee Fairgrounds for Kathy’s first-ever Book Fair for her book “Subtle Frequency”.

There were at least 64 authors, all selling books. Tables as far as one could see.

And Kathy did great. Sold some books, met a lot of nice people.

And we both learned a lot about how Book Fairs work.

I was proud of my wife. I think her table was as busy, if not busier, than most.

And that’s a great thing. Don’t forget her book is available anywhere you buy books, so pick up a copy!

ON ANOTHER CHART

Happy to see the Dailey & Vincent song “Moon Shines on the Still” that I wrote with Laura Leigh Jones in the #2 slot on this bluegrass chart.

Thank you, David Pugh, for playing our song so much!

SONG OF THE DAY

Here’s a fun song, “Hillbilly Tree,” that the Brady Seals and I wrote that he recorded. Brady brought the title into the writing room, and after going over ideas for the song, I was able to add the line, “The apple don’t fall.”

Put those together, and you get “The Apple Don’t Fall Too Far From the Hillbilly Tree.”

HEALTH NOTES

Word is there’s a new drug on the horizon that could bring an end to CPAP machines and allow millions to sleep soundly and breathe easily. A pill for sleep apnea. If approved, it could be on the market as soon as next year.

Americans are smoking less and less. Cigarette use among adults is now at an all-time low.

Adult patients experienced significant relief from pain and anxiety after just five minutes of in-person prayer, as found in a randomized controlled trial.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Spell check is everything.

LONG DAY

Yep, this would make for a long day.

Several students got stuck on this roller coaster that stopped for over 3 hours in Texas before Galveston Firefighters could rescue them. A power outage was the cause.

I love coasters, but I think I’ll just ride the Merry Go Round from now on.

SOMEONE SAID IT

Of course, your wife doesn’t cook like your mom. YOU SHOULD. You’re her son. You ate her food all you life.

YEP, IT’S A RECORD

A man from Idaho just balanced a RUNNING chainsaw on his chin for 4 minutes, and set a new Guinness World Record. Which means, other folks have done the same thing! I don’t think the folks at McCulloch or Poulan thought folks would be doing this with their product.

I guess one can wake up one morning and think, “You know what I’m going to do today? I’m going to practice balancing my chainsaw on my chin while it’s running.” I guess.

AND ANOTHER RECORD

In Palm Springs, California, they hope to have 1,000 or more Marilyn Monroe lookalikes show up to break yet another Guinness World Record.

The old record was broken in Australia several years ago when 254 women did their best to look like the iconic movie star.

And you just know that the event organizers will have a fan on the floor to help them recreate her “flying skirt” photo.

Marilyn’s 100th birthday would be today, June 1.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From Henry Ford:

If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said, faster horses.

TODAY

I’m back at the songwriting table with my friends Thomm Jutz and Caroline Owens. Thomm has just released a great new CD…here’s a SAMPLE

Have a great Monday!
