Memorial Day weekend is sneaking up on us; it’s Friday. Just 74 for the high today, and we have rain in our forecast all the way through Tuesday of next week.
YESTERDAY
Steve Dean, Alex Miller, and I sat down to write for the first time as a trio yesterday. And we went down the “country” road, trying to write something for Alex, who’s a country artist on Billy Jam Records.
And we did write a flat-out honkytonk song, the kind of song that fits Alex like a glove.
Steve and Alex had never met before, so they had a lot of fun getting to know each other. Steve has had a lot of great artists record songs of his through the years that Alex loves. Folks like George Strait, Alabama, Ronnie Milsap, Waylon Jennings, and on and on.
By the time we finished up, I felt like the two of them had really hit it off, and I’m sure they, and we, will be writing again.
SONG OF THE DAY
I’m choosing a song that Steve Dean recorded that he and I wrote, “Willin'”, which went on our first “Hits & Grins” CD, the trio that features Steve, Victoria Venier, and me.
Originally, we wrote the song for a “male” vocal, and then later we started performing the song as a duet sung by Victoria and Steve. That’s the version you’ll hear when you click on the link above.
HEALTH NOTES
A new study suggests that people who sleep roughly six to eight hours show the lowest signs of biological aging.
Ex-CDC chief Robert Redfield fears the Ebola outbreak is going to become a ‘very significant epidemic’.
A new study has found that taking a high dose of vitamin D3 during pregnancy may help set up offspring for better cognitive health by age 10.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Yep, it’s okay to shoot from a deer stand, not from the bed stand.
GONE TOO SOON
I was shocked to see the news yesterday that NASCAR champion Kyle Busch died at the young age of 41.
Even folks who don’t watch a lot of NASCAR races know the names of Kyle Busch, as well as his older brother Kurt. Just 41. A reminder that life is fleeting, way too fleeting for some.
TRADE SCHOOL ANYONE?
Having a Master’s degree has yielded the fewest jobs in decades, as businesses seem uninterested in those with advanced degrees.
However, having a college degree is not a bad thing. Statistics say that 87% of bachelor’s degree holders report being financially well off, compared to 67% of those without a degree.
Which leads to this joke about a guy with an arts degree who “walks into a bar,” and then heads behind the counter to start serving drinks.
ROBOT WOLVES
In Japan, they are making robot wolves to scare off the bears, and they can’t make them fast enough. There has been a surge of deadly bear attacks in Japan, thus these robotic wolves.
Scary enough looking that I would stay away if I were a bear.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
From Rachel Hollis:
“Moving doesn’t change who you are. It only changes the view outside your window.”
TODAY
I’m back writing with Steve Dean today, back-to-back days with my long-time friend and collaborator. We have written a long list of songs together over the years, traveled a lot of miles, and played a lot of shows across the country, even at the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Looking forward to that, and then the weekend ahead, and watching the Indy 500 on Sunday, and celebrating Memorial Day weekend.
Oh, and this race as well, which will be run today.
Have a great weekend yourself!
