Cheap Flowers...On The Charts...Georgia Quacker

BILL BLOG

Another Monday morning has rolled around. A little rain is falling early this morning, but the day will bring a high of 75 with sunshine in Nashville today. Pretty near perfect.

THE WEEKEND

It was pretty quiet at the Whyte House. I did get to watch my Cincinnati Reds break an 8-game losing streak. Got to the gym a couple of times, and did a little yard work. (Not my favorite thing in the world) And we quietly celebrated Mother’s Day.

My wife once told me not to buy expensive flowers, but to get a cheap arrangement. In fact, she said, “Just get me cheap flowers and dark chocolate.” So, guess what she got for Mother’s Day? This…

And this…

Made her laugh. Hope you treated the Moms in your life this well.

THE ROAD AHEAD

I’ve had a little time off the road, but that’s about to change, as between now and the end of June, I’ll be busy. I’ll be playing in three towns in Illinois: Marion, Heyworth, and Elmhurst, and there’s a trip to Raleigh-Durham on the books as well. All of these shows will be for Freedom Sings USA, where I get to hang out with veterans and write their stories into song.

ON THE CHARTS

The new Dailey & Vincent song, “Moon Shines on the Still,” just hit the bluegrass charts this week, sliding in at number 20. I’m excited to follow this “barn burner” of a bluegrass song that I wrote with Laura Leigh Jones a few years ago, which Dailey & Vincent and the all-star musicians tear up. So fun.

QUITE THE MOMENT

My friend and frequent co-writer Lauren Mascitti had a wonderful thing happen to her a few nights ago when she and her great band were playing at the world-famous Station Inn here in Nashville.

Holly Williams, the daughter of Hank Jr., reached out to her on Instagram, told Lauren she was a fan, and wanted to come see her show. And she did just that. Lauren called Holly up to the stage, and then Holly invited her friend, and actress Gwyneth Paltrow to come up on stage and sing with them!

Pretty cool moment. Watch THIS.

Not bad. I had forgotten that Gwyneth sang in the 2010 country music movie, “Country Strong,” which was shot in Nashville, with her co-star Tim McGraw

Folks are starting to discover former American Idol star Lauren Mascitti. Happy for her.

SONG OF THE DAY
Here’s a song that I wrote with Gerald Smith, better known as the “Georgia Quacker.” Yes, Gerald is from Georgia, and he can quack like a duck with his hands and mouth. Check THIS out. Crazy. He was so good at it that the old TV show Hee Haw used his voice for the animated duck that scrolled across the screen sometimes on that show.

And Gerald has also written songs for George Jones, Lori Morgan, Colin Raye, George Strait, and and others.

The two of us wrote this funny song, “To The Grave,” that Gerald recorded on his last comedy song album. That’s the song of the day.

SURVEY SAYS

That one needs to make a six-figure salary these days in order to buy a home. Way more than that in states like New York and California. No wonder kids are staying longer with their parents.

DO WE NEED THIS?

In China, they now have a toilet where you have to watch commercials BEFORE you get toilet paper.

You can’t make stuff like that up.

ANOTHER LIST

Southern Living just listed its top choices for “Best Beach Getaways” in the US. Here’s their top 5.

5…Tybee Island, Georgia. (I helped write this SONG about Tybee Island) that Becky Denton recorded. She and her husband Will love the place, I’ve not been) The tourism folks used the song to promote Tybee Island that's pretty cool. Click the link above to see that.

4…Hilton Head, South Carolina. (I’m going to be in the neighborhood on Friday, January 22 of next year, when our “Evening in the Round” trio, with Linda Davis & Lang Scott, plays in Beaufort, South Carolina.

3…Destin, Florida.

2…Gulf Shores-Orange Beach. (My favorite…and the secret is out)

And their favorite beach getaway is Golden Isles, Georgia.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From the humorist Will Rogers:

The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.”

TODAY

I’m writing with my friends and Grand Ole Opry stars Darin & Brooke Aldridge. It’s been a bit, as they have been crazy busy touring and just releasing a new gospel recording. So we’ll have fun catching up and then seeing if we can’t create a little musical magic today.

Have a great Monday!
