Here comes the weekend…it’s Friday! Sunshine and a high of 82 on tap for Nashville today.

YESTERDAY

I had a writing session with young Sonny French on Thursday morning. Sonny was fresh off a long tour with his family band, “The French Family Band.”

Sonny told me that the family group did 25 dates out on the road. That’s a pretty good tour to say the least.

He brought a great song idea that he and our friend Alex Miller had started on, but had not finished. (More on Alex in a second) So the two of us finished up that idea, and then called and teased Alex about how his name went on a new song, and he wasn’t even there. And that made him laugh, of course.

It’s always fun writing with such great young talent like Sonny, who most surely will be a person to keep your eye on for the future.

RELEASE DAY

I’ve never had TWO major song releases on the very same day. But that just happened today.

First, my buddy Alex Miller has released his brand-new album “More Country Than You.” I co-wrote this fun title track that Alex recorded with Emily Ann Roberts, who just yesterday got nominated by the Academy of Country Music as the “Best New Female Vocalist.” Congratulations, Emily Ann! I am so happy for her.

This new album from Alex is full of great country songs and includes another song that the two of us wrote, “Memories and Gin.

I’m so proud of this young country artist, and I’m certainly happy to have two songs on this project. AND…it’s available on vinyl!

BLUEGRASS DUO

And then there’s the brand-new Dailey & Vincent single that I’m finally able to share. “Moon Shines on the Still,” that I co-wrote with Laura Leigh Jones. So proud of this cut, from two of the very best bluegrass artists in the business. And a big thank you goes to my friend Robert Filhart for pitching this tune to the boys. They cut the heck out of it, with a group of All Star bluegrass musicians.

SONG OF THE DAY

So, let’s make the new Dailey & Vincent song the “song” for today. Check out this nice review our song got in Music Row.

DAILEY & VINCENT / “Moon Shines on the Still”
Writers: Bill Whyte/Laura Leigh Jones Robertson; Producer: none listed; Label: DV
– These bluegrass superstars unleash a torrent of rhythm on this rapid-fire salute to backwoods moonshiners. The thrilling tenor vocals are augmented by dazzling mandolin, banjo, and guitar runs—an absolute audio delight.

Take a listen to the full song.   I have no idea how musicians can play THIS fast. Incredible.

AND ON TOP OF THAT

My friend Scott Southworth is releasing a new “live” album today that includes a song we wrote together that was a previous single release for him, “Less to Break.

Happy to be part of this album as well.

So today is some kind of GREAT music Friday here at the Whyte House.

HEALTH NOTES

A woman discovered a missing nose ring that traveled to her lungs, causing a month-long cough. Yep, that will do that.

A new study finds that cancer rates are lower for married folks, and higher for those who are not married. Men who never married had a 68% higher cancer incidence, and among women, the figure rose to 85%.

A study concludes that adults with prediabetes who ate one avocado and one cup of mango daily for 8 weeks showed improved vascular function.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

I think I’m already over-trained.

THE CULPRIT

We have deer in our yard. Lots of deer. A big ole HERD of deer. My wife looks at them as pets. My late brother Gene would look at it as a great place to put up a deer stand.

My wife also complains because our concrete bird bath keeps tipping over. She finally figured out it was the deer doing that as she watched them drink out of it.

So, these days she doesn’t have to leave the house much because the deer provide free entertainment.

PSYCHICS

Never gone to one, don’t ever see me doing that. Don’t see me sitting in front of a crystal ball, don’t see me sitting with a tarot card reader in the near future either, or a fortune teller. Not when I can buy a fortune cookie.

BUT…in Nashville, there is a working psychic who has a TWO-YEAR waiting list. I’m not on it.

This is the best comedic take on a psychic ever from my late friend and brilliant Radio Hall of Fame guy, Gary Burbank. One of the characters he created, Gilbert Gnarley, calls a psychic on the air. LISTEN HERE to what happened.

ON THE GULF

Down in Gulf Shores, these bad boys are out on the beaches again.

Yep, Man O’ Wars. And you don’t want to get stung by one…it hurts. I remember being in Gulf Shores a few years ago, and walking out on the beach and seeing what looked like pale blue balloons all over the beach. Balloons, they were not. They are to be avoided…and the danged things STINK as well.

TATERS ANYONE?

We have a new food place opening near us today called “Spuds and Butter.” I’d not heard of it before. But apparently, they sell taters in all kinds of forms. Including a BBQ tater.

It might be worth going just to buy a “Spuds & Butter” T-shirt. Heck, if I ever start a musical duo, I might name us that.

MOTOR CITY

Detroit is trying to get people to live there, and not leave. They are offering cash incentives to those who will do just that. Money for home closing costs, moving expenses, and more.

Does anybody want to move to Detroit?

LOTS OF SHIRTS

A woman just ran a half-marathon while wearing 55 T-Shirts. And yes, that too is a Guinness World Record.

She was doing it to celebrate her recent weight loss, as you can see in the picture. Good for her.

I’m trying to HIRE someone to run marathons for me so that I too can drop some pounds. That should work…right?

WAZE

That’s my app for traveling. And now, it’s gearing up to alert us to upcoming potholes. It already does that when I’m driving now and then. But if it warned me about everyone I’m approaching, the danged thing would never shut up. We have a LOT of potholes right now in Nashville. I should have bought stock in tire alignment places.

It’s so bad, one resident said that driving her counts as cardio.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From Mark Twain:

Never regret anything that makes you smile.”

TODAY

I’m back writing with my Aussie friend Angus Gill this morning, then over the weekend, I’m sure I’ll be checking out some of the play at the Master’s in Augusta.

Have a great weekend!
