Monday morning, and the last week of April is on us. All eyes will be on the weather late tonight as they are calling for bad weather, maybe even a tornado. Fun stuff.
80 degrees high today, and rain through Wednesday.
THE WEEKEND
Fairly uneventful weekend until this showed up in our driveway.
Sigh. That means some of my weekend was spent with a pitchfork and shovel alongside my wife. I once again pitched the idea of just asphalting our lawn, and I heard “crickets” from her.
Other than that, it was a nice weekend to be out under the beautiful weather we’ve had lately.
A MILLION STREAMS
It’s official now. The song “More Country Than You”, the duet featuring Alex Miller and Emily Ann Roberts that I helped write, has now gone over a million streams. And it’s reached over 2.5 million on Spotify!
I had a pretty good start on this song the day the three of us gathered to write at Billy Blue, my publishing company. Both Alex and Emily are great artists, and they have great personalities and are just fun to be around. So with that in mind, I showed them the idea, they immediately loved it, and now here we are with a million streams for this duet.
And the album was just released, and guess what the title track is?
You just never know what’s going to happen with a song that you write. I’m looking forward to being at the album release party, which is free and open to the public at the Troubadour Theater here in Nashville on Thursday evening May 14. If you’re here or near, come join us to hear the songs from this great new album.
GRAND OLE CIRCLE
Here’s a little clip of my friends Darin and Brooke Aldridge singing a bit of the song the three of us wrote, “Grand Ole Circle.” In this clip, they are standing smack-dab in the middle of that circle on the Grand Ole Opry Stage. That happened just a few nights ago here in Nashville. Hard to beat those kinds of moments as a songwriter.
SONG OF THE DAY
Today, it’s the song “Nothing Gonna Stop” from the married duo Rob Bellamy and Ayla Brown. This is a song that the three of us wrote one day when they both lived here in Nashville. Several years ago, they moved back east near Boston, where both are from, but they are still making music. It’s a love song, check it out.
HEALTH NOTES
Here’s an eye-opener. A new study published in the May Journals of Gerontology claims that the simple act of voting in a political election lowered people’s risk of mortality by up to 15 years. (I’m skeptical. Because sometimes when I see the names on the ballot, I think I’m risking a heart attack.)
A change of protocol. New guidelines recommend mammograms every 2 years for older women.
Another study agrees that even low levels of alcohol could damage your brain.
HERE’S YOUR SIGN
Now there's a HOT deal.
JOKE
Comedian Steven Wright said, “I was driving past the gas station. There were two signs in the window: ‘Help Wanted ' and Self Service.’ So I went in and hired myself.”
GREAT MOVIE QUOTES
The American Film Institute has ranked the Top Movie Quotes of all time. What would you guess? Here are their Top 5 choices.
5…” Here’s looking at you, kid” from Casablanca.
4…” Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore,” from The Wizard of Oz.
3…”You don’t understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender,” from On the Waterfront
2…”I’m Gonna Make Him an Offer He Can’t Refuse,” from The Godfather.
(So both #3 & #2 were made from the same actor…Marlon Brando)
And their top choice, which would have been mine as well is, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn,” from Rhett Butler in Gone With the Wind.
I might have put this quote somewhere on my list.
SPEAKING OF MOVIES
“Michael”, the new music biopic about Michael Jackson, had the biggest box office opening for a music biopic ever this weekend, raking in $217 million. The biopic has had some brutal reviews, but that did not seem to matter to the folks who buy tickets.
BEACH FUNNY
This is a great picture of my longtime beach co-writer and friend, Brent Burns.
Yep, two stools are required when you play music. I joke on stage sometimes that some of the stools that I’ve sat on are really hard and sometimes uncomfortable. So in my contract rider, I always demand 3 “stool samples.”
THE SPHERE
That big globe built in Las Vegas that cost 2.3 billion dollars to build is paying off.
It is now the highest-grossing entertainment venue in the world. Last year alone, it took in 379 million dollars. Tickets to see the likes of Kenny Chesney, The Eagles, The Wizard of Oz production, Zac Brown Band, and others cost $521 per seat on average.
And they are set to build a few more. Rumor has it that Nashville might get one. How about the Grand Ole Opry inside the Sphere?

QUOTE OF THE DAY
From Charles Schulz:
“Don’t worry about the world coming to an end today. It’s already tomorrow in Australia.”
TODAY
I’m off to write with my buddy Steve Dean, along with Spencer & Connor Hatcher, the young country music brothers. Should be fun.
Have a great Monday!
