Durango to Telluride...Bucket List...A Musical Memorial

BILL BLOG

Wednesday, April 29, 2026

It’s the last Wednesday in April. The big storms have finally passed through here in Nashville. Today we expect some rain with a high of just 75. A come this Saturday? The high temperature will only be 60! I should not have put my jackets away.

YESTERDAY

The bad weather let up around 9 AM or so yesterday, and the electric company got us restored with power within 4 hours or so. I did kind of fall in love with our solar panel generator, using it for the first time.

And the weather let up in plenty of time for me to make my songwriting appointment with Caroline Owens, so we got to sit down, catch up on her trip with her band to beautiful Durango, Colorado, for a bluegrass festival there. And she played the song I wrote with Andrea Pearson, “Telluride,” more than once. Durango is not that far from Telluride, so you can imagine that our song went over well with the bluegrass fans out there in Durango.

Caroline brought a wonderful “sad song” idea that was made for a piano. So she sat down on the piano stool and turned her idea into a new song. It’s a treat for me to get to write with a piano player now and then. 90% of all of the songs I’ve written were penned with a guitar, or guitars.

It was fun bringing her idea home and getting to catch up.

SONG OF THE DAY

Here’s a song that I wrote with Ruckus Deluxe, a Canadian duo, several years ago. The two guys in the duo are Chad Oliver (who once was a member of one of those Cirque du Soleil shows) and fiddle player Ian Cameron.

They came from Canada to Nashville to write a few songs, and reached out to me somehow about writing with them. I did, and we got a couple of songs written that went on their album, including this very fun song, “The One That Got Away.” It was fun getting to create with them,

HEALTH NOTES

Research suggests that heart attacks and strokes have been rising with extreme weather events.

Drinking beer may not be entirely bad. A study has found that both full-strength and alcohol-free beers contain measurable amounts of vitamin B6, an essential nutrient that supports neurological function, including the production of serotonin and dopamine.

The medical community is reporting that rectal cancer deaths are rising for those under the age of 50.

HERE’S YOUR SIGN

Wow, there’s a back-to-school bargain for you.

TOP BUCKET LIST ITEMS

Here are the top 5 for most people, according to those folks who know these things. All 5 of these are “adventure” bucket list items.

Swim with sharks, ride in a hot air balloon, experience zero gravity, volcano boarding (where you surf down a volcano), and skydiving.

I’ve done just one of these.

I don’t see myself crossing the other 4 off the list. How about you?

MOTHER’S DAY

It’s sneaking up. What to get her? Always tough choices. But, I did ask AI what NOT to gift dear Mom.

Cleaning and household supplies.

Weight loss and fitness gear.

Fix it or “self-help” items.

Gifts that are actually for yourself, and not Mom.

So if you’re out shopping for good ole Mom and see a bargain on one of these?

Resist pulling out your credit card.

THEM AND US

Actress Lisa Kudrow, who played “Phoebe” on the TV series “Friends,” revealed how much the cast STILL makes in residuals every year. Wanna guess?

That would be 20 million. Wow. Now I really do want to go where everybody knows your name.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

From Unknown:

To a coward, courage always looks like stupidity.”

TODAY

I’m prepping for a house party concert tonight to celebrate Hall of Fame Songwriter Jim McBride, who passed recently. Jim wrote “Chattahoochee” for Alan Jackson, along with several other Jackson hits, and he also wrote “Rose In Paradise” for Waylon Jennings and many others.

Jim carried the mail in Huntsville, where he’s from, before helping write this big Conway Twitty HIT that had him moving to Nashville, and leaving the mail truck. As great a songwriter as he was, he was an even better man.

Several well-known songwriters will take turns singing Jim’s songs tonight to honor Jim. Me included. And it will be an honor to do so.

Have a great Wednesday!
